We've been told all week there was a storm coming, and so it proved, but Darragh had to play second fiddle to the top of League One and Two for drama this afternoon.

Just one point separates the top three sides in the third tier while the play-off race looks to be nearly as hotly contested over the weeks to come.

Walsall are the new leaders of League Two after an eye-catching win at Port Vale in the early kick-off while at the other end of the table Ian Holloway's Swindon hauled themselves off the foot of the EFL with victory over Fleetwood.

That's not it for this weekend, don't worry, we'll be back after 14:00 GMT tomorrow to bring you all the action as West Brom host Sheffield United, deposed as leaders of the Championship this afternoon.

Until then, batten down the hatches, and we'll see you tomorrow!

Thanks for your company this afternoon, goodnight!

What a day for Cambridge. A highlight in a poor season as theygrab a huge 4-1 win over fellow strugglers Shrewsbury.

That result puts them two points behind Northampton, who don't play until Monday.

Defeat for Shrewsbury and Burton mean they stay rooted to the bottom on 11 points, and are now eight points from safety.

Leyton Orient's win over Wigan earlier puts them above their visitors.

    Top of League One

Would you look at this for a promotion race?

It's as you were in the top 10 in terms of position, but it's the points column which has become even more interesting.

Wycombe's draw at home to Reading allowed Wrexham and Birmingham to close within a point at the summit, though Blues have the benefit of a game in hand, and two over the second-placed Red Dragons.

Huddersfield and Stockport look like they are here to stay while Reading remain in the top six after their dogged point at Adams Park under new boss Noel Hunt.

    League Two top

They would have wanted three but Doncaster Rovers' 2-2 draw with Cheltenham keeps them in the automatic promotion places, after Walsall's win over Port Vale earlier today took the Saddlers top of the division.

Grimsby's 3-0 victory at Morecambe sees them continue to look good in their play-off push.

Wimbledon sit similarly, one place lower, but with a game in hand, after also winning 3-0 away today, at Harrogate.

A third 3-0 win in this division today saw Chesterfield jump ahead of Notts County who were deprived by Storm Darragh from playing today.

Gillingham just make the top 10 after the lowest scoring 3pm game in this division, Salford being defeated 1-0 by the Gills.

Swindon's win, their first in the league since Ian Holloway took over, means they move above Carlisle and Morecambe to leave the drop zone.

Carlisle do have a game in hand after their postponement against Newport.

Fleetwood continue to slide down the table but do have games in hand to try and get themselves trending in the right direction.

Tranmere remain in in trouble having lost to Chesterfield, 3-0 further damaging their now second-worst in the league goal difference too.

Harrogate suffered the same scoreline loss and are in a similarly poor situation.

  6. Birmingham's 'most impressive victory of the season'published at 17:08 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2024

    FT: Barnsley 1-2 Birmingham

    Darren Carter
Ex-Birmingham midfielder on BBC Radio WM

I would go as far as to say that is one of the most impressive victories of the season and probably one of the most hard fought.

It wasn't a typical Blues display where we dominated possession, it was just about trying to break the opposition down. For large periods of the game mainly going into 60-65 minutes they played better in the conditions, better than Blues did.

They deservedly went in front but the reaction from Jay Stansfield, was a moment of magic.

What an impact Jay Stansfield has had in this game. He is there when you need someone to stand up and change the game.

This is the kind of game he relishes, when you need someone to drag you back into the game.

If anyone was to drive them back into the game, it was going to be him.
