Bear in mind, Liverpool won the title without a reliable out and out number nine, a declining left back, and no major summer or winter transfer signings, especially in the number six position.

I'm sorry Anon that's embarrassing. Liverpool 19/20 got 99 points which broke the record at the time and is the second highest in history. No one expected Liverpool to win and for you it may be forgettable, but equalling the highest number of top flight titles in history is really quite the achievement, especially as Liverpool are on track for over 91 points which need I remind you higher than Ferguson or Arsenal have EVER achieved. For a first time manager to dominate the league is incredible.

    Zac, London

Absolutely crazy to dismiss this title win. Anon at 11.40 - 'Both of Liverpool's titles in the last 30 years come from others failing not from them winning' Surely that's the same every year? One one team can win it and the others who don't have 'failed' Did Liverpool 'fail' when City won the league because Liverpool only came 2nd? Silly way to look at it

Probably one of the most forgettable title wins in football history. Tottenham and United closer to bottom three than top. City having a huge fall off, Arsenal being Arsenal and Chelsea adapting to a new manager with a bloated squad. Everyone expected Liverpool to win but it wasn't by being competitive and entertaining, it was because no one else was consistent or even decent. Both of Liverpool's titles in the last 30 years come from others failing not from them winning.

Well done, Liverpool. But let's put this into perspective, Man City weak this year due to continuously being at the very top. Liverpool have not won treble or even a double. It was a good solid premier league champions performance and deserved. No invincibles, 100 point champions, etc. just solid.

  3. 'Slot has done brilliant. It could have turned into a Man Utd situation'published at 11:35 British Summer Time

    Liverpool 5-1 Tottenham

Actor and comedian Craig Charles, appearing on BBC Radio 5 Live, praised the job Arne Slot had done with Liverpool while also commending former manager Jurgen Klopp:

"Arne Slot has done a brilliant job. It could have turned into a Man United situation where they are still trying to replace Sir Alex Ferguson It was a really difficult job to do.

"People are trying to reappraise Jurgen Klopp's achievements. People have got to realise that this is a Jurgen Klopp side basically that he put together. Arne has come in and he hasn't changed much but we do seem a more patient side now with the build up and the passing.

"We are not blowing teams away. There's more maturity about the way Arne Slot plays. And it'd be interesting now, he's got a couple of windows now to change the complexion of this side and turn it into a side of his own."

Ah of course, the classic "Liverpool only won it cos of X". Just congratulate them. Even as a Man Utd fan I can do that. Absolutely well deserved. No ifs, buts or maybes.

Arne Slot is the first Dutchman ever to manage a side to the English top flight title.

The Netherlands is the 10th nation (seventh non-British) to have a manager win England’s top division, and first new nationality since Liverpool’s last title in 2019-20 under German Jürgen Klopp.

Also, part of the reason other big teams dropped off is because of the quality of a lot of the rest of the teams such as Fulham, Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, even Wolves and Palace in the latter half of the season. We can see how well English teams performed in Europe as well as the gap between the promoted sides and 17th place. The general quality of established Premier League teams is so high right now which makes the Liverpool title even more impressive.

    Ed

The league is certainly more competitive this year, as Liverpool’s record against the current top ten isn’t actually that dominant. But Liverpool’s points haul against the current bottom ten so far is an incredible 53 out of 57, with the only blemishes - the draws with Man United and Everton (the controversial last minute Tarkowski equaliser). Put simply, when Liverpool were supposed to win their games against worse opposition, they nearly always did, and that’s how they’ve deservedly won the league.

It was long coming, to be honest. I think they fully deserved it.

To be able to do it at home four games before the end of the season, it shows how strong they’ve been. I think in the end every team that wins the league goes through a patch where maybe it isn’t the nicest football to watch but they still manage to get results.

Obviously for us as Dutch men with Slot being the first Dutch manager to win the premier league and Virgil van Dijk being the first captain to win a premier league, it's something special for us. It really puts the Dutch managers and Dutch football on the map again.

In the interest of fairness though, Anon, when it comes to injuries, it's not like Liverpool have had an injury free season.

Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, Conor Bradley and Trent Alexander-Arnold are among just some of the names that have all missed big chunks of this campaign through injury.

Dave (10:33) is 100% correct. If you told pundits at the start of the season that Arsenal would have the most injuries in PL and city would lose Rodri and De Bruyne would fall off then most would have put Liverpool as the favourites.

There’s been a lot of talk about how strong the league has been this year, particularly the bunch of teams from 2nd-12th. They’ve all taken points from each other, play great football and have great managers. Surely this makes Liverpool’s dominance even more impressive? Plus the fact that outside that bunch are two teams in Europa league finals and a derby rival who always up their game against them. This is a very strong league and Liverpool have completely destroyed it.

For [Slot] to make the move to the Premier League, especially to a big club like Liverpool into the footsteps of Jurgen Klopp, I think no one expected him to actually do what he did with his staff and his players.

In the beginning people were thinking someone’s coming in from the Mickey Mouse league, what’s he going to do at Liverpool but very soon he turned around the criticism with beautiful football, with charisma and I think everybody now sees what he’s capable of doing and the most interesting thing is probably still to come.

I’m sure he’s not going to sit still. It’s strange to talk about when you’ve just won the league but I’m sure that in the back of his mind he’s already planning for next season.

Can we stop the "other teams not good enough" narrative. A league title is the ultimate test of consistency. You can win a cup with luck but not a league title. And I'm not a Liverpool fan.

    Tom

Oh Dave, this time last season 82 points was top of the league. Do us all a favour and stop pretending this isn't incredible.

    Zac, London

I’m not having this argument that Liverpool are only champions because others have dropped off. The gap may have been smaller but nobody should underestimate what they have achieved this season. People seem to forget the strong start Liverpool had and they’ve been up there pretty much ever since. Deserved champions!

Aup, it's me again back from me hollibobs.

I've seen that take of Dave's a lot throughout the season.

I'm curious - do people genuinely believe that? Believe that every other team in the Premier League just happens to be bad the year Liverpool win it.

Surely the competitiveness of the league as a whole has just increased? Hence the gap between those in the relegation spots.

You can't blame the pundits. No one saw Liverpool winning it because, on paper, they were expecting the other teams to show up, and they didn't. Had Arsenal, City, Man United and Spurs played as well as they did last season, the Liverpool's place would be as predicted. They weren't that good, others were just worse.

  18. What were people saying in pre-season about Liverpool?published at 10:21 British Summer Time

Well, they weren't talking about them being title contenders that's for sure.

On the back of the departure of Jurgen Klopp, the immediate future in terms of success for Liverpool was uncertain.

Prior to this season getting under way, we asked 30 different BBC Sport pundits their predictions for the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Of the 30, none predicted Liverpool would be champions.

In fact, only two of the 30 believed the Reds would even finish in the top two, while three had them missing out on the top four completely.

  20. Wrapped up with four games leftpublished at 10:16 British Summer Time

    Liverpool 5-1 Tottenham

While winning the Premier League title with four games left to play is impressive, it comes nowhere near the record Liverpool set the last time they won it.

Jurgen Klopp's side wrapped up the title with seven games remaining in 2019-20, the earliest a team has ever won the Premier League.

The current Liverpool side join Manchester United and Arsenal as the joint-third fastest title winners.
