  2. 'Making history is the icing on top'published at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time

Republic of Ireland 1-2 Wales (Agg 2-3)

Wales manager Rhian Wilkinson on BBC 5 Live Breakfast after her team qualified for Euro 2025, the first Welsh side to reach a major women's football tournament

"I’d say the most emotional part for me was watching these women celebrate with their friends, families, with tears of joy. You know their families have seen it all, have seen the heartbreak from these players and now get to enjoy this special moment of having made history."

What does it mean to her personally?

“I fell out of love a little bit with football. It’s a hard sport, especially as a manager. It can be fickle. And when the Welsh job came up I wanted it. I really wanted it.

"There were other opportunities but they didn’t feel right. This one did because I knew it would feel like coming home. A special place for me, it’s special for my mother, it’s special for my siblings, my aunts, cousins, uncles, everybody lives here and it’s been really heartwarming to come home and be able to support the team.

"And making history like this is the icing on top of what has been already a really wonderful opportunity for me."

  3. Should Lopetegui get more time at West Ham?published at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time

The BBC Sport poll results on Julen LopeteguiImage source, BBC Sport

Throughout today, we've been running a poll on West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui and whether or not he should be given more time in charge?

The results are in and it could not be closer, a 50-50 split.

Perhaps, that is why West Ham are yet to make a decision on the Spaniard?

Wales' heroes are heading home this afternoon to find a nation still smiling after history was made in Dublin last night.

Their women's team were knocking at the door when it comes to major tournament qualification in recent years without ever getting it open.

But that all changed on a memorable evening at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday as Rhian Wilkinson's team claimed a 3-2 aggregate victory over the Republic of Ireland to book a place at Euro 2025 - their first major tournament.

In his pre-match news conference yesterday, manager Eddie Howe stated that forward Alexander Isak had not been in training following the hip injury he picked up against Crystal Palace.

The forward was withdrawn in the first half at Selhurst Park and while Howe admitted it wasn't expected to be long-term, he said it would be about "time and pain management" for the 25-year-old.

However, in an interview with beIN SPORTS, the striker seems to have all but confirmed his availability for tonight's match.

On the injury, he said: "It was a knock to my hip and it was too painful to carry on but it's developed pretty good so, I feel good and hopefully 100%.

On whether he is fit to play against Liverpool: "That's the plan."

  6. Three suspended for Southamptonpublished at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time

    Southampton v Chelsea (19:30 GMT)

Southampton trio Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Flynn Downes and Tyler Dibling all serve a one-match ban on Wednesday for accumulating five bookings this season.

Loanee Lesley Ugochukwu is ineligible to face his parent club but Jan Bednarek returns after missing the last two games, while Paul Onuachu could also be fit.

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana will miss out, although the extent of his hamstring injury is yet to be determined.

    Reece James remains sidelined.

    Head-to-head

    • Southampton could earn three successive league wins against Chelsea for the first time in 39 years.
    • Nonetheless, Chelsea have scored in their past 18 Premier League away games in this fixture since a 1-0 defeat in December 1997.
  7. Martinez a doubt for Villapublished at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time

Aston Villa v Brentford (20:15 GMT)

Emi Martinez suffers injury against ChelseaImage source, Getty Images

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez sustained a hairline finger fracture against Chelsea and is a doubt to face Brentford.

Midfielders Amadou Onana and Jacob Ramsey have each missed the past three matches due to injury and remain sidelined.

Brentford midfielder Mathias Jensen is out because of a minor hamstring problem, while Wednesday's game comes too soon for Kristoffer Ajer.

The Bees are still without Gustavo Nunes, Rico Henry, Aaron Hickey and Josh Dasilva.

    Head-to-head

    • Brentford's solitary victory in 12 top-flight meetings was by 2-1 at Gtech Community Stadium in January 2022.
    • They are winless in all 10 league and cup away games against Aston Villa, though six of the past seven were drawn. The exception in that run was Villa's 4-0 Premier League win under caretaker manager Aaron Danks in October 2022.
  8. 'This is going to be a purists' game of football'published at 14:36 Greenwich Mean Time

    Southampton v Chelsea (19:30 GMT)

    Chris Sutton BBC banner

Southampton boss Russell Martin was tearing his hair out about their disallowed goal against Brighton on Friday. His side still picked up a really good, battling, point but they really needed all three.

This is going to be a purists' game of football, because both teams play an attractive style, but I can't see past a Chelsea win here.

It won't be a stroll for Enzo Maresca's side but they have so much quality in their team and they look so dangerous at the moment - up front, Nicolas Jackson is on fire.

Jackson's improvement this campaign compared to last is making me think maybe I should have had a second season at Stamford Bridge. There are a lot of Chelsea fans who tell me that... but most of them are unhappy I even had one season there.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-2

  9. Broja could make Everton debutpublished at 14:33 Greenwich Mean Time

    Everton v Wolves (19:30 GMT)

    Armando BrojaImage source, Getty Images

Fit-again Everton forward Armando Broja could make his debut after manager Sean Dyche said he will be "in and around" the matchday squad for the first time since joining from Chelsea last summer.

Youssef Chermiti, Tim Iroegbunam and James Garner remain out.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and Wolves defender Craig Dawson are both set to make their 300th Premier League appearance.

Wolves are without Nelson Semedo, who is suspended after collecting his fifth booking of the season during the 4-2 defeat against Bournemouth.

    Head-to-head

    • Everton have lost their past three home league games against Wolves, as many defeats as they’d suffered in the previous 18 meetings at Goodison Park.
    • Wolves have won five of the six most recent league encounters, drawing the other.

Moyes, Moyes, Moyes. What is wrong with you people? We have the right to want a change in manager, just as United fans did and Leicester too. We were fed up with 25% possession and scraping wins at home playing a low block set up. Is it better? Maybe not, but in every game we do have the ball more, just need to learn what do with it! Moyes race was run and we don't want him back even if he was our most successful manager of recent times. Now get off our back!

Kevin de Bruyne was out from August to the beginning of January last season after suffering a recurrence of a hamstring issue that forced him to be replaced in the first half of the 2023 Champions League final victory over Inter Milan.

His contract expires next summer and De Bruyne has confirmed talks are yet to take place over an extension, as he prioritises his return to fitness.

"I’d love to have Kevin in his prime, at 26 or 27," said Guardiola. "He would love it too.

"But he is not 26 or 27 any more. He had injuries in the past, important and long ones, and he is a guy who needs to be physically fit for his space and energy.

"It’s normal, it’s nature. He played a lot of games for 10 or 11 seasons.

"I know he is desperate to help us, he gives glimpses of brilliance that only he can have."

Man City boss Pep GuardiolaImage source, Getty Images

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says his side need the fans' support at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday as they face Nottingham Forest hoping to get their first win in the Premier League since 26 October.

"We need them," said Guardiola. "The situation is what it is but they have always been there and they don't hide their feelings.

"They know what this team has done in the last decade, but they also know we absolutely need the support. The players are human beings.

"And we are, as always, willing to give everything to change the dynamic."

Asked how the squad is dealing with their poor run of form, the Spaniard added: "By thinking about the next one. I don't know another way. We don't feel sorry for ourselves. It is what it is and we have to accept it."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has dismissed talk of a rift with star midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.

Guardiola did not mention the pair directly but, before the Premier League encounter with Nottingham Forest, said there was no issue with De Bruyne.

"People say I’ve got a problem with Kevin," he said. "Do you think I like to not play with Kevin? I don’t want Kevin to play? The guy who has the most talent in the final third. I don’t want it? I have a personal problem with him after nine years together?

"He’s delivered to me the biggest success to this club. I’m desperate to have his best.

"But he’s been five months injured and two months injured. He’s 33 years old. He needs time to find his best."

West Ham get what they deserve. David Moyes had done a fantastic job there and twice has been forced out of the club only for them to sink lower down the table. If the Hammers have the nerve to ask him back a third time, I hope he has the self-respect to not pick up the phone.

Fulham v Brighton (Thu, 19:30 GMT)

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva on potential incomings in January: "Let's see what's going to happen. We lost some important players after the first game and after the international break. Let's see what's going to happen. All the managers want the same, all clubs want the same - they want to step forward and improve and I am no different.

"Someone to come to our football club has to be someone that can make an impact. I don't want to get a new face inside for the sake of it. If we can improve then we will do our best. Someone to come in has to be a really good player because we have been doing very well and the players have been doing really well so they have to have an impact."

Alan: Have to disagree with Jordan's comment @13:12. If he watched the Leicester game he would have seen lots of attacking play, over 60% possession and 31 shots from West Ham. They were unlucky with that scoreline as Leicester weren't more clinical.
