Spanish giants Real Madrid are in talks over finalising the deal to sign Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander Arnold on a free transfer this summer.

Multiple sources close to the negotiations have told BBC Sport that while a deal is still to be fully agreed, work towards completing the transfer is reaching the closing stages, though stress nothing has been signed yet.

Alexander-Arnold is in the final three months of his contract at Liverpool and is free to discuss a move abroad.

Real have made the 26-year-old a priority target this summer with sources close to the situation saying the Spanish club have been tracking the player for close to two years.

  3. Training changed to afternoonpublished at 15:39 Greenwich Mean Time

Training sessions have been moved to the afternoon in what is considered a key technical diversion from Gareth Southgate's tenure. Under Southgate's management, training sessions were held after breakfast.

Tuchel is scheduling training sessions post-lunch as this allows himself and his staff more time to prepare for the sessions whilst also allowing players the benefits of sleep recovery and oxygen consumption.

  4. Tuchel's opening speech to the playerspublished at 15:36 Greenwich Mean Time

    Sami Mokbel
    BBC Sport Senior football correspondent

Thomas Tuchel spoke to the England players at the club's Hilton hotel base at St George's Park. The German manager was keen on having various communal areas for the players so that they can relax and spend time together.

A popular pastime amongst the group is playing video games as Tuchel is determined to build on the existing camaraderie as he addressed in his opening speech the importance of relationships.

In his opening speech, Tuchel reiterated they have just 24 training sessions together before USA 2026 gets under way.

To that end, the former Chelsea boss admitted he would not be making drastic changes to the playing style Southgate had developed. The overriding message of Tuchel's address, though, was one of triumph and history.

  5. Tuchel knows the spine of his teampublished at 15:33 Greenwich Mean Time

    Sami Mokbel
    BBC Sport Senior football correspondent

Thomas Tuchel has decided on the spine of his team with the likes of John Stones, Declan Rice and Harry Kane being the three key figures almost certain to be named in the starting XI at next year's World Cup finals. Barring injuries or something drastic, the German manager expects these three players to reach the World Cup finals.

The likes of Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka can only be added to the list of almost guaranteed starters.

It is also understood that Tuchel held one-to-one meetings with certain players during training camp in hopes of understanding what makes them tick and learning who the leaders are in the team. Tuchel likes big personalities and he spent the training camp finding out who those personalities are.

Ex-Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth is in discussions with the FA about a potential return to the governing body, BBC Sport has learned.

Senior sources have said the role he is in talks over would be to oversee both the men’s and women’s technical operations and the next stage of St George’s Park. Ashworth was at the FA between 2012 and 2018 - he was sacked after five months at United after Ineos hired him from Newcastle Utd.

The FA has declined to comment.

  7. Late squad and team announcementspublished at 15:29 Greenwich Mean Time

    Sami Mokbel
    BBC Sport Senior football correspondent

England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed with some players that they would be called up the evening before the squad was officially announced. All players who were on Tuchel's radar received a text in the days leading up to the squad announcement informing them that they could be called up.

Most of the players received a text 90 minutes before the squad was announced on March 14. Clubs are usually informed hours before the official announcement but in this case, they were told only 20 minutes before squad was confirmed.

But the biggest move has been naming the starting XI only on matchday. Gareth Southgate usually named his XI the night before but Tuchel named his starters only in noon on the day of the game against Albania.

Players usually have clues on the starting XI from the training sessions but this has proved to be smoke screen for Tuchel. For instance, Morgan Rogers and Anthony Gordon heavily featured in shape training ahead of the Albania game causing people to believe they would start. But both were on the bench.

  8. Tuchel dedicated to keeping in touchpublished at 15:26 Greenwich Mean Time

    Sami Mokbel
    BBC Sport Senior football correspondent

England manager Thomas Tuchel has been maintaining connection with players outside of the international window. Whilst Gareth Southgate also used to keep in touch, Tuchel has gone above and beyond in staying connected with the players.

The players that didn't make the squad are also kept in touch with by the German manager as he explained to them why they didn't make the squad. He also offered them feedback on what must be improved for them to earn a recall.

It is also understood that Tuchel offered career advice to players with the summer transfer window approaching and provided feedback on whether a move would help benefit their international career.

    Harry Kane

    • How much did he play? Alongside Jordan Pickford and Ezri Konsa, England captain Harry Kane was one of three players to play every minute against Albania and Latvia.
    • What did he do?Kane scored a goal in both of England's matches during the international break to take his tally to 71 goals for England's senior team.
    • What does his England future look like? England captain Kane had another camp where he scored goals and led his side to back-to-back victories. He remains clear of the chasing pack to lead England's front line, which includes Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Tottenham's Dominic Solanke. Barring injury or an enormous drop off in form, expect Kane to lead England in attack and with the captaincy for some time.
    • Alex Howell's average match rating vs Albania and Latvia: 7
    • Alex Howell's review: Alex described Kane's positioning against Albania as "a big difference from the Kane that England saw at the Euros last summer," as well as describing Kane's second half goal last Friday as "trademark."
    • BBC Sport readers' average match rating vs Albania and Latvia: 6.38

England need to mix it up for a while. The formula has become too predictable since they went 3-0 up in the first half against Spain in 2018. Palmer and Rogers are useful attack threats. Tuchel is also right that they need to be much quicker, accurate and more confident to take it to the best teams in the world. Keep going!

  13. Player review after Tuchel's first England camp - Eberechi Ezepublished at 15:13 Greenwich Mean Time

    • Alex Howell's average match rating vs Albania and Latvia: 7 (didn’t play vs Albania)

Can someone explain to me why Henderson is in the squad. What is the unique element that he brings to warrant him a place in a highly competitive environment?

    Jarrod Bowen

    • How much did he play? West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen featured off the bench for the final 16 minutes against Albania. Against Latvia, Bowen started and played for 61 minutes.
    • What did he do? Following a cameo against Albania where he made a tackle and completed all of his eight passes, Bowen created three chances against Latvia and had two shots.
    • What does his England future look like? There is plenty of competition for the positions in England's team as wingers and attacking midfielders, with Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rodgers, Anthony Gordon, Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze all battling alongside Bowen. A goal or assist against Latvia will have helped his cause.
    • Alex Howell's average match rating vs Albania and Latvia: 5.5
    • Alex Howell's review: Against Latvia, Alex said Bowen "showed plenty of effort, but it didn't quite click. On Bowen, Alex added he "is a quality player, but has to take his chances when given them in an area of the pitch where England have lots of options."

Were you impressed by Bowen or not? Let us know with a thumbs up or thumbs down.

England need to up the level of their friendly opponents if they want to improve. Senegal and Wales will represent a challenge, but England should win both games later this year. We haven't played Argentina since 2005, and so, as the reigning world champions, why have England not tried to arrange this? Would be great to see Messi play against England at Wembley at least once before he retires. If England are to win the World Cup, they must play regularly against their strongest rivals, rather than waiting for the knockout phase of the tournament.

  17. Player review after Tuchel's first England camp - Anthony Gordonpublished at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time

    Anthony Gordon

    • How much did he play? Anthony Gordon played for 16 minutes as a substitute against Albania but sustained a hip injury which forced him to miss the Latvia win.
    • What did he do? Gordon won one of his three duels and completed seven of his eight attempted passes. He also conceded one foul.
    • What does his England future look like? Competition for places is strong alongside Gordon, but places up for grabs. Marcus Rashford, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Jarrod Bowen, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze are just a few in contention against Gordon for minutes.
    • Alex Howell's average match rating vs Albania and Latvia: 6 (didn’t play vs Latvia)
    • Alex Howell's review: On Gordon's cameo against Albania, Alex said "there weren't many attacks for Gordon to show what he is about."
    • BBC Sport readers' average match rating vs Albania and Latvia: 5.55 (didn’t play vs Latvia)

Rashford lost the ball 36 times over the 2 matches, the most of any player. He needs to be dropped again, not praised.

    Marcus Rashford

    • How much did he play? Aston Villa forward Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, started on the left wing in the wins over Albania and Latvia, playing 74 and 79 minutes respectively.
    • What did he do?Across the two games, Rashford completed four of his 11 dribble attempts, won seven of his 24 duels and gave possession away 36 times. He also didn't win a foul. However, Rashford did create seven chances, six of which were against Latvia.
    • What does his England future look like? Starts in both matches do, in theory, put Rashford ahead in the battle to start as England's left winger. There is plenty of competition though. Anthony Gordon, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Jarrod Bowen, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze are also vying with him for minutes.
    • Alex Howell's average match rating vs Albania and Latvia: 6
    • Alex Howell's review: Against Albania, Alex said Rashford "linked well with Jude Bellingham on the left and looked to beat his full-back when the opportunity came. He also pressed well, which is something Tuchel wanted him to show". However, Alex added he was taken off "after a quiet second half". Against Latvia, Alex said Rashford "looked sharp" and was a "threat all evening", adding his link-up with Bellingham was "one of the positives of the game and this international window".
    • BBC Sport readers' average match rating vs Albania and Latvia: 5.41
