    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC's Football Daily

When we are preparing for those moments in that tournament, the tournament itself - the World Cup itself - is going to take an eternity.

It is such a long tournament now that, from the kick off and the first game, can act as a preparation for the latter stages.

Think of Argentina winning the world cup - they lost their first game to Saudi Arabia and they built something from there.

Even when the tournament begins, the knockout stages feel an eternity away.

Chris, that's one of the big concerns expressed by pundits about England's upcoming fixtures - how will they prepare to face the fancied nations at the 2026 World Cup, should they get there?

Former England goalkeeper Rob Green has a unique take on that...

Tuchel can only be judged when we face a Spain, France, Argentina, Brazil or a penalty shootout in a knockout tournament. These are the games he was brought in to win, not lose like we traditionally do.

  5. Tuchel 'can build the squad' with remaining England gamespublished at 10:31 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March

    England 3-0 Latvia

    Izzy Christiansen
Former England midfielder on BBC's Football Daily

He's [Thomas Tuchel] building that belief within the group, building that sort of snappy winning mentality that he will be demanding off the players behind the scenes on the training pitch.

The fixtures coming for the rest of the year, they are not hugely exciting but they are an opportunity for Tuchel to continue the building of the squad behind the scenes.

I played in these games myself at international level and it is hard to break teams down despite the level disparity. And, unfortunately, I don't think Tuchel is going to get exactly what he wants from the opposition in this calendar year.

So, we have to strap ourselves in and go with the flow and see what happens.

If we take a step back, England have won seven of their eight fixtures since losing the Euro 2024 final against Spain.

The only mis-step in that run was a Nations League defeat at home to Greece under interim boss Lee Carsley - a loss they quickly avenged with a 3-0 win in Athens in the reverse fixture.

Former England midfielder Izzy Christiansen told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily that she can see signs of belief building within the group under new head coach Thomas Tuchel...

Talking of Morgan Rogers, the Aston Villa midfielder spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live's John Murray after Monday's win over Latvia after making his first start for England:

"It's a dream come true, it's a moment to remember for sure. Loved just being out there with the boys, and show what I'm about.

"We knew it was going to be difficult, we knew they were going to defend well, in a low block, and we have to break them down.

"We had to be patient and we were. I thought our quality showed. Delighted all round and really enjoyed it."

I was at Wembley last night for my first England game in a while. It's important to understand that neither Albania nor Latvia showed any serious attacking intent and as such attack vs defence for 90 minutes is a tough watch. Having said that I also think it's abundantly clear that Thomas Tuchel has to undo the hard-wired belief that England's players have had instilled in them: that if we don't lose the ball by being safe and not taking on the opposition too often and by keeping it, it will eventually lead to chances. I thought the one player who showed a desire to take chances against Latvia was Morgan Rogers and although it never really happened for him it's hard not to conclude that he's not had the Southgate mantra banged into him. Southgate's legacy should be the platform for Tuchel to push on from.

A good morning to anyone just joining us and those who have been here since 7am!

We have been looking at reaction to England's 3-0 win over Latvia at Wembley, which maintained Thomas Tuchel's 100% record after two games as Three Lions head coach.

Tuchel said after following up his opening 2-0 victory over Albania that "we will get there" when asked to rate England's performance over the two games.

We have asked for your opinions on this, and which players you believe will take us there - to success at the 2026 World Cup.

Over the next few hours we will be looking at the main winners and losers of Tuchel's first England camp by delving into each individual performance in more detail.

Please, stay with us and join the debate.

Former England on 5 Live Breakfast

You can't get much better than that. Those types of games, we're expected to win and they're not going to be remembered when we qualify. There's all these big expectations and things they were very good at and there's still things they can work on.

I do like the manager, I met him a few times when he was at Chelsea, I thought he did a great job there and I think he will take us to slightly the next level that we might just need to win, to get over the line.

I think he's got that passion, I think he's got that ability and experience.

We've got so many talented players, I think he might just drag us over the line.

Two wins from two was the expected return from these fixtures, and that's what England delivered. Frankly, a kind group means we should expect 10 wins, against this level of opposition, however dull we may appear to be playing. There seems to be an obsession with how England need to play dynamic and exciting football, but winning is the important part. Also, people always talk about how we play against the big teams. This mentality of always staring up at other nations means that subconsciously we don't think we belong alongside them, and therefore don't back ourselves at the tournaments.

  13. Will Tuchel's England learn from the past?published at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March

Phil McNulty certainly has been here before, and has a fairly recent experience of how England faired under previous boss Gareth Southgate when they faced World Cup qualifying opponents Serbia in their opening game of Euro 2024.

That game at Gelsenkirchen was settled by an early Jude Bellingham goal, but as BBC Sport's chief football writer described it, the regulation 1-0 win was "not an easy ride".

Phil reported that while Bellingham provided the highlight, England got the job done in "solid rather than spectacular style".

He also sounded a warning that the Three Lions "failed to maintain intensity" after the break and "offered an average Serbia far too much encouragement".

Will Thomas Tuchel's England side learn from the past and go to Serbia on 9 September ready to exert control over their biggest rivals to automatic qualification from Group K?

  14. 'Same old England? We had all been here before'published at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March

    England 3-0 Latvia

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

The view from the vast majority reporting on England's win over Latvia last night - including myself - was that this was something of a groundhog day when it comes to qualifiers.

There is nothing, as yet, to distinguish Thomas Tuchel's England from Gareth Southgate's. Indeed, it was the sort of stodgy display that used to draw criticism towards Southgate.

It is still early days, however, and even a coach as good as Tuchel needs time to bring the excitement he has promised. And he does have two wins from two games, although this was an unspectacular slog against a country placed 140th in Fifa's world rankings.

But, as the paper aeroplanes landed on the Wembley turf after only 14 minutes and the Mexican Wave swept around the stadium with seats emptying well before the end, there was certainly a feeling that we had all been here before.

Why is it England fail to adapt? Against lower-ranked opposition it is an opportunity to constantly try intricate passing and running at players. Defending pace has always been difficult. Short, close passing will open up better chances and while it won’t always succeed it will help the team to be better against better opposition. On the occasions we did, we looked far superior. This constant side passing and not having the belief to go for it sends a message of "they are not good enough".

  16. 'England's test will be in Belgrade on the 9th of September'published at 09:30 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March

    England 3-0 Latvia

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter on Football Daily

England's test will be in Belgrade on the 9th of September, away to Serbia. But apart from that, England might well be on the path to qualifying by then anyway.

The set of games from the rest of the calendar year will not pose a test before the World Cup.

Gareth Southgate, when he played friendlies, got top-level opposition. They also tested themselves in the Nations League, they were in the top league, so they tested themselves against the best.

Senegal and Wales, with the greatest respect, and also teams like Andorra and Latvia are not going to test England.

As mentioned, England should get more practice on how to use the right players in the right way to find the space and break down teams when they play back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Andorra.

    That's the immediate challenge.

But Thomas Tuchel's vision for his England side may only really become clear when they move on to their away game in Serbia in September...

It was slow, it was laboured, but I do sympathise with the fact that you can only play what's in front of you.

They certainly did impose their quality and dominance in spells, but fundamentally England struggled to use the space that Latvia gave them, which wasn't very much.
