Summary

  1. What are England's upcoming fixtures?published at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March

    England

The question for England and Thomas Tuchel, Jonny, is when will they face an opposition that will test them?

The concern is that, if they do qualify from this group, then they may not be properly tested until the 2026 World Cup.

By that time, will it be too late?

Here are the Three Lions' upcoming fixtures, including six more World Cup qualifiers and two international friendlies:

    • 07 Jun: Andorra (a)
    • 10 Jun: Senegal (h - friendly)
    • 06 Sep: Andorra (h)
    • 09 Sep: Serbia (a)
    • 09 Oct: Wales (h - friendly)
    • 14 Oct: Latvia (a)
    • 13 Nov: Serbia (h)
    • 16 Nov: Albania (a)

These teams always play a low block. It's always a fairly drab affair. Two wins, five goals, job done, move on. Proof will be how we do against the bigger teams.

England will win nothing with Rashford, Bowen, James, Konsa.....Our German Southgate - at 3-0 up against Latvia - brought on Henderson and Walker, both of whom will be 35 in a couple of months' time. Unless the players develop the ability to take on an opponent and go round the outside, we're in for hours of this brutal to watch stuff, and, ultimately, failure again.

Let’s be honest about it, anything less than two home wins out of two against Albania and Latvia would have been a big surprise. And that’s what Thomas Tuchel’s got; six points out of six to begin his World Cup qualifying campaign, and five goals without reply against awkward opponents with massed defences.

But against two teams that are way below England in the world rankings there were more paper planes than thrills.

And after both matches there was a feeling of being left wanting more from Thomas Tuchel’s England, even though these are still early days.

  6. England 'need a lot of work' under Tuchelpublished at 08:23 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March

    England 3-0 Latvia

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC's Football Daily

Is this how we are going to see England play period? Because I think it needs a lot of work. I think it needs a lot of work with the players he's got, those who aren't here.

They have got to gain that understanding, whether it is against a low block of Latvia or whether it is against the high press of Spain or Germany, they will need to get it nailed down. I think that's what he needs to work on.

I was in the pub last night playing darts with a mate. Can’t see the TV screens from the dart board area - we were relying on cheers to let us know about goals. It went from 1-0 to 3-0 without a peep. Goes to show how high England fan expectations are - we demand a lot from the boys. No-one is impressed with a measly three goals against lowly Latvia. Maybe time to adjust expectations?

  8. Poll: Are you more excited by England under Tuchel?published at 08:09 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March

There is a bit of a disconnect, however, between your messages and the quick straw poll we ran at the start of today's page, with the ratio about two-to-one giving England's performances in their opening two games under Thomas Tuchel a thumbs up.

We now have a proper poll up and running at the top of this page.

The question is simple: Are you more excited by England under Tuchel?

The three options are: more, less or same as before under Gareth Southgate.

No difference in what we're seeing really, yet. Should have given credit to previous manager rather than sound publicly critical of a servant of the team. Not needed. Public dissing is not a good incentive. More divisive.

Tuchel’s style of play is efficient football over exciting football.

Getting slightly sick of the phrase ‘it’s difficult to break down a team playing a low block’, especially for these international games where England are playing limited opposition. Players of England’s calibre should be blazing through teams like Latvia and Albania. Eze’s goal is the perfect example of what happens when the players trust their skill even a little bit. Rashford was the other example - too scared to lose the ball so just kept putting inane crosses into the box. So far it’s just the same old, same old from Tuchel. It could be worse, but it feels like it should be better.

The Express may have been an outlier in choosing to use a negative headline in their back page, but judging by the broad tone of messages from readers this morning, many of you are yet to be convinced by Thomas Tuchel's start to his reign as England manager...

    Today's newspapers

The Express is the only newspaper to go with a negative tone, saying Harry Kane's 71st international goal and Reece James' "lightning free-kick" help England to "save face" in a "laboured win" over Latvia.

To get 2-0 and 3-0 wins against Albania and Latvia has to be considered a success. People are expecting goalfests but the other teams in this group, excluding Serbia, are playing for damage limitation. Even after going behind they’re happy to try and restrict the goals conceded rather than try to push for an equaliser while playing away. I think the first time we’ll get glimpses of end-to-end football will be when we start playing teams that need to get something out of the game. Maybe towards the end of the World Cup qualifiers that will happen, if not it will be the tournament itself.

  15. We will get there - Tuchelpublished at 07:36 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March

    England 3-0 Latvia

So what did England manager Thomas Tuchel make of his side's performances in wins over Latvia and Albania?

"It is good, because I learn about my team and my team learn about me," he said after their latest victory, over Latvia at Wembley on Monday night.

"We will get there...these qualifiers bring a bit of tension, what happens when the going gets tough, how will the players react? It is important to get better.

"I will always fight for them because they have been great in training. Some players played out of position. Taking this into account, overall I am very positive."

  16. Key stats of England winpublished at 07:30 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March

    England 3-0 Latvia

England managed 73.4% possession and had 27 shots, eight of which were on target.

Latvia, meanwhile, managed three shots, with just one on target.

What did England do with that possession? Well, they completed 660 of their 696 passes, managed 293 successful passes in the final third and had 70 touches in the Latvia box.

All that led to three goals and a second successive clean sheet.

Could they have done more to beat Latvia's low block?

They are likely to get more practice on how to break down the opposition in their next two World Cup qualifiers, which both come against Andorra - away on 7 June and at home on 6 September.

Thomas Tuchel secured a second successive victory as England head coach in their World Cup qualifier against Latvia at Wembley - but it was a slog rather than a thrill ride before they made their superiority count.

England were frustrated for long periods by the country ranked 140th in the world, before dominance was transformed into goals.

Chelsea captain Reece James celebrated his first England start since September 2022 by curling in a superb free-kick from 20 yards seven minutes before half-time.

England then struggled to add to the scoreline in the face of Latvia's stubborn resistance until captain Harry Kane turned in his 71st goal in 105 international appearances from Declan Rice's cross after 68 minutes.

As Latvia finally ran out of steam and resistance, substitute Eberechi Eze scored his first England goal with a deflected shot 14 minutes from time.
