I don't think anyone in football will have a bad word to say about Sven Goran-Eriksson.

When I met Sven, I used to live in Lisbon and work in the UK. One Monday morning either late 2006 or early 2007 I was on the bus from the terminal to the plane and saw Svennis. As a fellow Scandinavian and football fan I had to say "hej". We had a small chit chat about how nice it was to live in Portugal on the bus and then I found myself sitting next to him on the plane and we kept talking. One of the first things I asked him was if he was enjoying his gardening leave - he had been let go six months before and I could only imagine how much I would enjoy some time on the beach with a golden handshake like he had. But, to my surprise he started telling me how he worried about not being able to work again, how quickly things change in football and he was worried about not being relevant. The way he spoke to me, some random stranger with a shared love of football and Portugal was really quite an eye opener. I left the plane thinking this guy just wants to work on what he loves and he seemed like a real human, nothing fancy, nothing arrogant, just a very nice gentleman.

    What a character.

It is such sad news, he was really sometimes underestimated as a coach and a manager because of the personality and the sense of fun which I am sure he'll want to be remembered by.

He had that twinkle in his eyes. We shouldn't forget one of the great moments of English football, Sven in charge - Germany one England five - one of the great days.

England were in a bad place and he turned Englands fortunes around.

At the Legends game at Anfield he was just a humble man and the fact it was a charity game that raised a million pound, he was delighted with.

Me, Ian Rush and John Barnes were on the bench and the delight he had on his face, he kept saying, 'this is amazing'.

He got to get what he always wanted as a child and the crowd were unbelievable towards him, that was brilliant to see.

Sven-Goran Eriksson: Former England boss on fulfilling 'dream to manage Liverpool legends

One of Sven-Goran Eriksson's dreams was to manage Liverpool, a club which he had supported all of his life.

After Eriksson announced his illness, the Swede was still able to make that dream come true as he took charge of a Liverpool Legends team which beat an Ajax Legends side 4-2 at Anfield, in March this year.

An opportunity which he called, "beautiful".

Sven-Goran Eriksson returned to international football with the Ivory Coast before being appointed Leicester City manager in October 2010. The Foxes finished 10th in his first season but a push for promotion to the Premier League never materialised and he left after a year.

His final postings were in the Far East with three Chinese club sides and the Philippines national team before this most enduring, colourful personality retired and returned to live in his beloved Sweden.

And after disclosing his terminal cancer diagnosis in January 2024, the lifelong Liverpool fan was able to live out one dream two months later when he managed a Liverpool Legends team in a match against Ajax at Anfield.

"To finish with Liverpool, it can't be much better than that," he said.

When Sven Goran-Eriksson took over the England job I had played the previous game and I didn't have the best of games. He pulled me to one side for the next match and said 'I am going to play David [Seaman]'.

He then said, 'you are really young and you'll have pretty of opportunity in the future' - he then picked me a number of times, including Euro 2004.

One thing I used to laugh at - when we used to watch videos of the opposition, quite often the goalkeeper would make a mistake and he'd say, 'he won't be playing next game!'.

The way he dropped me, he was always honest and straight - he gave you a belief there would be another opportunity.

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

Many think the English manager should be an Englishman or someone who is steeped in English football and he wasn't that.

Sven Goran-Eriksson did admit that he was a Liverpool fan as a boy, clearly in Scandvaina there is a huge affection to English football.

He didn't have the background in English football like Kevin Keegan and Terry Venables had - there was a resistance to that.

With the outside noise, he didn't let it affect him at all.

  18. Such sad news about Svenpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 26 August

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

I covered the back end of Sven Goran Eriksson's time with England for another organisation and also covered Manchester City during his brief time at the club nearly 20 years ago now.

He always had a smile on his face and never took himself too seriously, which was handy given the criticism he faced.

He just tended to laugh about it and move on.

It is overlooked what a good coach he was - which is how he got the England job in the first place.

The last time I interviewed him was in China in 2016, when he was coaching Shanghai SIPG.

It was the same pre-season trip as Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola were getting used to new jobs at Manchester United and Manchester City respectively.

But my chat with Sven was the one that stands out.

That was the impact he made.

    A fabulous man.

  20. 'A lovely man and most importantly a family man'published at 13:14 British Summer Time 26 August

    Henry Winter
Football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

Very sad, my thoughts are immediately with his daughter and son and all who knew him. I went to visit him a couple years back and he just knew everyone!

He was sort of a local hero and they were awe-struck that he had taken on the world of football.

The huge honour of becoming England manager which is massive here and was front page news for five years in Sweden. He remained humble and popular, a fascinating man.

A lovely man and most importantly a family man.
