Statement from Sven-Goran Eriksson's children: "Our father Sven-Göran Eriksson fell asleep peacefully in his home at Björkefors outside Sunne this morning. He has for a long time fought bravely with his illness, but now it came to an end.

"Our thoughts go out to Sven-Goran's father Sven; girlfriend Yaniseth and her son Alcides; to his brother Lasse and wife Jumnong, as well as to all good friends and acquaintances in Sweden and around the world.

"Dad told us at the beginning of this year about his serious illness and received an amazing response from friends and football fans around Europe. He was invited to several football teams in England, Italy, Portugal and Sweden. They shared their love for football and for dad. It was unforgettable for both him and us. He expressed his appreciation and joy and stated that such beautiful words are usually only uttered when someone has died."

"I get to hear it while I'm alive and I'm incredibly grateful for that. The heart beats twice and the tears come. I have had the best job in the world and I was happy every day for long periods. It's been fantastic," he said.

"We have shared his gratitude and got to experience the wonderful meetings between him, football and all his friends. We thank everyone for these positive memories and your support during his illness.

"We hope that you will remember Svennis as the good and positive person he always was both in public and at home with us."

FA CEO Mark Bullingham: "This is a very sad day. He gave all England fans such special memories. No one can ever forget the 5-1 victory in Munich against Germany under Sven’s guidance.

“Sven will be rightly recognised and forever remembered for his significant work with the England team, and for his wider contribution to the game.

"On behalf of my colleagues at The FA, past and present, our thoughts are with his friends and family today. He will be much missed, and we will pay tribute to him when we play Finland at Wembley next month.”

On X, The Prince and Princess of Wales have paid tribute: Sad to hear about the passing of Sven-Göran Eriksson. I met him several times as England manager and was always struck by his charisma and passion for the game. My thoughts are with his family and friends. A true gentleman of the game.

At his peak, Sven-Goran Eriksson was one of the game's finest coaches as he collected both domestic and European honours with regularity, something he was unable to replicate with England.

Eriksson will, however, always have the memories of his most stunning night in charge, when Germany were beaten 5-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Munich's famous Olympic Stadium in September 2001.

So sad to hear about Sven-Goran Eriksson. An excellent coach, a decent man, unfailingly polite and didn’t take the ‘noise’ around the football industry too seriously. RIP.

Sven Goran-Eriksson resigned from his post at Lazio in January 2001 to succeed Kevin Keegan as England manager - Eriksson would become England's first ever foreign manager.

During his time with England, Eriksson led the Three Lions to a famous 5-1 win against Germany, in Munich during qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, with Michael Owen scoring a hat-trick.

Eriksson was in charge for two World Cup campaigns, exiting both the 2002 and 2006 editions at the quarter-final stage.

He took the national side to one European Championship in 2004 when it was Portugal who sent England home after a penalty shootout victory in the last eight.

After a five year stint, it was announced in January 2006 that Eriksson was to leave his role following that summer's World Cup in Germany despite having two years left on his contract.

  14. Man Utd's Sancho demandpublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 26 August

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester United are intending to drive a hard bargain when it comes to a deal for Jadon Sancho this week.

Juventus are interested in the England international and Chelsea have been mentioned as an alternative.

But United sources are adamant they are not intending to give Sancho away.

Ideally, they would sell the 24-year-old. The second option would be an obligation to buy at the end of a season-long loan, which in itself would attract a fee.

I can already see that as one that might run to the 11pm deadline on Friday.

At Chelsea there's still a lot of forwards that are not in the squad. There is a lot to come before the window closes, who knows more forces are coming in, but it’s more likely that players are going out.

Cole Palmer when he come to Chelsea has been the main man, he has been very influential.

I worked with Noni Madueke at PSV – when he made the step to Chelsea I had my thoughts, I thought 'why would you go there?'

To see him do well and score goals – he is a threat going forward, but he need to keep working hard in training. If you play like he did at the weekend he is going to be a starter and he needs to keep doing that.

  16. Best football reunions - Wayne Rooneypublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 26 August

Bursting onto the scene in 2002 was a certain Wayne Rooney. Fresh from school, but raring to go.

At only 16-years-old Rooney took the Premier League by storm with his boyhood club Everton. In his first two seasons of senior football, Rooney collated 67 appearances in the Premier League and had 15 goals to his name.

In 2004 the big-time came calling and, at only 18-years-old, he moved to Manchester United on a six-year deal.

But, like all hometown heroes they do return at some point. After 13-years in Manchester, Rooney returned home calling the move back to Everton a "no-brainer".

For me, nothing will beat Paul Cook's return to Chesterfield.

It was a ridiculous coup when he returned to manage the club in the National League and after six treacherous years in the fifth tier, along with numerous play-off heartbreaks, he guided Chesterfield back to the EFL last season.

In his first spell at the club he won the League Two title and led the Spireites to the League One play-offs.

In August 1999 Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger moved in for Juventus' star-man - Thierry Henry.

Henry would go on to have an eight-year stint with the north London club. The Frenchman would win two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Community Shields before his move to Spanish giants Barcelona.

Henry returned to England in 2012 for a much shorter spell on a loan deal from his parent club, New York Red Bulls - a stint which many Arsenal fans will always remember.

And, who knows, another one to come in the future?
