    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

Frustration for Palace forward Ashleigh Weerden as she finds herself in space on the right but doesn't receive the ball from Clarissa Larisey, who delayed her pass just a beat too long.

And almost immediately, Aston Villa are charging up to the other end of the pitch.

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa win their second corner of the match. It's pinged towards the back post and there's a scramble in the area before Lily Woodham puts the ball out of play for the hosts.

Will Villa come to rue these missed opportunities? They've had plenty of the ball but they're yet to make it count.

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

Ashleigh Weerden chases a ball over the top but Aston Villa keeper Sabrina D'Angelo is alert to the danger and comes out quickly off her line.

Barely a minute later, Palace have another break but D'Angelo snuffs out the danger once more, diving at the feet of the onrushing attacker.

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

That's a wild effort from Aston Villa's Kirsty Hanson. That shot would've been more at home in yesterday's Six Nations action.

But Aston Villa will be the happier of the two sides as we approach the halfway mark in the first period. They're spending a lot of time in and around Crystal Palace's box.

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

Oooooooh! That was close from Jill Baijings. Her dipping effort from the edge of the box goes just over the bar. Shae Yanez was worried, making an acrobatic leap.

Aston Villa, who haven't scored in three league matches, are certainly looking hungry for a goal.

  6. Postpublished at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

A little bit of a let off for Palace goalkeeper Shae Yanez there. She dallies around with the ball at her feet in the box before clearing it straight to an Aston Villa attacker.

Her teammates bail her out and Crystal Palace win the throw-in.

  7. Postpublished at 14:18 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

Miri Taylor takes aim from long range for Aston Villa but her effort is well over the bar.

Apart from Ebony Salmon's shot in the opening 10 minutes, neither goalkeeper has really been tested yet.

That's a lovely pass from My Cato, sliding the ball down the left to unleash Clarissa Larisey for Crystal Palace.

It all gets a bit scrappy in the Aston Villa area before Sabrina D'Angelo, wearing a mask after sustaining a facial injury against Everton, snatches the ball out of the air.

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

That was too easy for Kirsty Hanson. She drives into the Crystal Palace area past two or three defenders and is able to play a left-footed cross across the face of goal.

There's a bit of spark in this game.

  10. Postpublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

Ebony Salmon scored the winner when these two sides met in November and she nearly opened the scoring today. Her right-footed shot is well saved by Shae Yanez.

It's been a pretty even opening 10 minutes.

  11. Postpublished at 14:11 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

Katie Stengel is looking lively for Crystal Palace on the right. That's twice now she's found herself in space.

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa

Crystal Palace's Katie Stengel curls a cross into the box from the right wing but no one is arriving to get on the end of it.

It's worth remembering that Crystal Palace have only scored 12 goals in 15 league games this season.

Crystal Palace are staring Women's Super League relegation in the face. They are bottom of the league, four points adrift of Aston Villa with seven matches remaining, and haven't registered a league win since 6 October.

However, new manager Leif Smerud, who replaced Laura Kaminski at the beginning of March, has called on his side to "be brave" and think about "fighting" instead of "surviving".

"I don't want to run and be scared. We have to be brave. We are in a situation where we have very little to lose, but it's easy to be scared," he said.

"We can't control the outcomes but we can control what we do and the mindset is important.

"I want us to hunt the ball, hunt the goal, and hunt development as one unit.

"People will think about surviving but let's think about fighting instead."
