"They always say champions are made when nobody's watching."

That is a theory raised and forcefully supported by Mary Earps, who was already a serial winner before her move to Paris St-Germain last summer.

Striving for more success, the England goalkeeper embarked on a fresh journey when she swapped Manchester United for life in the French capital.

"I've kind of gone away from the craziness of England. I get to go away and work hard in silence and just kind of get on with my job quietly," Earps says.

Earps was a crucial member of England's Euros-winning squad in 2022 and was awarded the Golden Glove as the Lionesses reached the 2023 Women's World Cup final.

For Manchester United, she played every league game for four seasons as the club's outright number one and won the Women's FA Cup in May 2024 before heading across the Channel to France.

    So why did she leave?

Lucy Bronze will come up against a team she "always roots" for when England take on Portugal in the Women's Nations League.

The 33-year-old defender was born to a Portuguese father and an English mother so she was eligible to represent both nations.

She was approached by the Portuguese Football Association as a 16-year-old, but having grown up in England, chose to represent the Lionesses.

"I have little Portugal flags on my boots actually. My parents met in the Algarve strip years and years ago" said Bronze, speaking at a media conference in Portugal.

"I have always been in good contact with the Portuguese federation. They are a team I always root for.

"I always hope for the best for them and I hope they do well in the Nations League - just not against us. My first ever kit was a Portugal kit.

"I spent all my holidays in this area and played most of my football here outside. It influenced me a lot. I'm just as proud to be Portuguese as I am to be English."

On striker Liam Delap: "He sees every game as an opportunity as does the rest of the team, scoring last weekend with a well taken finish gave him a good boost - he’s looking forward to the game."

I don’t want to look past AZ Alkmaar because we all know where that will get us. But if we do get past them, the prospect of Frankfurt away and then Lazio away in the second legs of the quarters and semis is daunting to say the least, especially given our horrendous away form!

"Losing there 1-0 is good information for us, how we have to compete, to respect, to prepare, to try to avoid the mistakes we made.
