With all this talk of vacant manager positions, it seems like a good chance to have a look at the number of English female head coaches in the Women's Super League. Are WSL clubs overlooking them? And if so, why?

It is not just international players who are flooding to the WSL, as overseas coaches now see it as a league they want to be a part of.

Chelsea were able to prise manager Sonia Bompastor away from European giants Lyon, while Dario Vidosic swapped Australia for Brighton this summer.

Foreign coaches are showcasing their qualities but it is becoming harder for female managers, particularly homegrown coaches, to break into the top tier.

The Football Association stated in 2022 their aim was to have 75% female managers or head coaches in the WSL.

But the WSL season started with only four of the 12 clubs having female managers - two of them English, while three vacancies this summer were filled by foreign coaches.

Former Arsenal defender Casey Stoney, who was sacked by her NWSL club San Diego Wave in June, was seen as an early frontrunner for the job having returned to England.

The ex-Manchester United manager told Sky Sports' Three Players and a Podcast recently that she was "chomping to get back in" for the right opportunity, yet she is not believed to be under consideration by Arsenal.

Another out-of-work manager currently living in England is former Netherlands coach Mark Parsons, while Tony Gustavsson, who led Australia to the World Cup semi-finals, recently left his role with his country.

Englishman Nick Cushing, who led Manchester City to their first WSL title in 2016, is currently head coach at New York City but has always remained open to a return to England.

The Gunners also have a number of impressive coaches in their ranks who could be in the frame, including Arsenal legend Kelly Smith, former Brighton manager Melissa Clarke-Reed, and Renee Slegers, who succeeded Eidevall at his former club Rosengard and will have the chance to impress as interim head coach.

Pressure has been building on Jonas Eidevall but the feeling from Arsenal last week was that they backed him, and the result against Chelsea was unlikely to sway their thinking - at least not immediately.

But Eidevall himself will have seen the reaction from the Arsenal fanbase and the media, with their poor start to the season reflected in results.

P45 signs - calling for his sacking - could be seen in some parts of Emirates Stadium during Saturday's 2-1 defeat, while a picture of a wall displaying the words 'Jonas Out' in graffiti was later shared on social media.

Eidevall did not defend himself in the post-match media conference, instead pointing to the resilience shown by his players and pleading with supporters to keep belief.

It felt only a matter of time before he would need to step away, or the club would have to make that decision for him.

Eidevall returned to the training ground on Monday and informed the club of his intention to step down. He felt he was not the right person to take the club forward.

He has made changes during his time at the club, improving professionalism, but ultimately failed to meet the raised expectations he had set - and that has proved costly.

There are a few coaches available who would make strong candidates, none more so than former Manchester United manager Casey Stoney - who was invited by Arsenal to watch their defeat by Chelsea at the Emirates. However, she is not currently being considered.

Elsewhere, former Arsenal striker Kelly Smith is already working at the club and may throw her name in the hat, while ex-Netherlands manager Mark Parsons is also looking for a job.

Pressure has been mounting on Jonas Eidevall after a string of poor results but many have expressed their shock that it was him who decided to call time on his stint in North London.

Former Arsenal player Ellen White told BBC Radio 5 Live's Women’s Football Weekly Podcast: "I was really shocked, shocked more so on him resigning.

"There was a lot of pressure on him as a manager and the football club in general.

"It was inevitable it was going to come soon, but I was surprised it came now rather than after the next few games.”

White says she found it "really hard" watching the team's performance in their 2-1 Women's Super League defeat by rivals Chelsea on Saturday.

“I couldn't see what the players' tactics were, what the philosophy was. It looked very disjointed, quite individual.”

Renee Slegers joined Arsenal as assistant coach in September last year having worked with Jonas Eidevall previously in Sweden.

The pair were at Rosengard before Slegers succeeded Eidevall at the club in June 2021, going on to lead them to back-to-back titles.

"I was shocked by the news and was very sad," Slegers said.

"He has been a good leader for the staff. I worked with him before in Sweden. We worked well together and I'm sad it got to this point."

Asked if she wanted the job full-time at Arsenal, Slegers added: "Right now I just focus on these next two games ahead of us.

"The future I am not so concerned about."

Arsenal have failed to win any of their last three games under Jonas Eidevall, drawing one and losing two.

They suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat at Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week before slipping to a 2-1 loss at home to Chelsea three days later.

Jonas Eidevall's decision to resign as Arsenal manager this week is the start of a new era at the club where they will look to plot a route back to the top.

During Eidevall's three-year spell in charge, he helped develop professionalism off the pitch, but ultimately fell short of expectations and ambitions on it.

He delivered two Women's League Cups and led Arsenal to a Women's Champions League semi-final, but Chelsea were able to wrap up a fifth successive league title during that time.

Arsenal's task now is to address the issues that crept in under Eidevall's management and recruit a strong successor to catch up on their rivals.

Former England captain Steph Houghton said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club that Arsenal's style of play has been "worrying" at points this season.

Of course we have to address the main talking point this week and that is that just yesterday it was announced that Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall had resigned from his position as head coach.

It comes after a string of poor results in the Women's Super League, where the Gunners currently sit sixth having won just one of their opening four games of the 2024-25 season.

Eidevall signed a new three-year contract with the club last October after consecutive top-three finishes in the WSL, while also winning the Women's League Cup in the past two seasons.

But many believe Arsenal should be pushing harder for the WSL title with the squad depth that they currently possess.

Sporting director Edu said: "We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and achievements here since joining us in 2021.

"We have great respect for the dedication and commitment he showed to our women’s first team and recognise the role he has played in the growth and development of Arsenal Women."

Assistant coach Renee Slegers will take charge on an interim basis so that's who will be in the dugout this evening. Talk about being thrown in at the deep end...

Right, before we get into the actual football action, there's the small matter of a Women's Super League resignation to pick through...

England winger Chloe Kelly makes a rare Manchester City start this evening following her call up to the Lionesses squad this week.

The 26-year-old has fallen somewhat out favour with Gareth Taylor but Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman says she has "built credit" with England and deserves to be in her squad for the friendlies with Germany and South Africa.

Kelly scored the extra-time winner in the 2-1 victory over Germany as the Lionesses were crowned European champions at Wembley in 2022.

But Kelly has struggled for game time this season under Taylor and was an unused substitute against both Barcelona in the Champions League and Liverpool in the Women's Super League in the Blues' last two games.

The Women's Champions League is back for match day two with two of the three Women's Super League sides in action this evening.

Manchester City get us started in the early kick off with a trip to Vienna to take on nine-time Austrian top-flight champions St Polten having beaten holders Barcelona in their opening Group D game last week.

Then, after what has been a pretty dramatic week already for Arsenal, they host Norwegian side Valerenga at Emirates Stadium having been thrashed 5-2 by Bayern Munich in their Group C opener.
