Today’s game feels like a big one for Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.
Given their were positives and minuses to take from last Saturday’s defeat at Brighton, victory over old rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford would take them up towards the top six and within a point of everyone apart from leaders Manchester City.
However, defeat would leave them stuck in the bottom half of the table and trigger concern about a repeat of last season, when United finished eighth.
The positive is that United recorded a victory and had the better of a draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford towards the end of last season. And Ten Hag has not forgotten that.
“If there is a game to quickly focus everybody’s minds, it is the visit of Liverpool,” he explains in today’s match programme.
“I have experienced this fixture here at Old Trafford three times; the first win of my time at the club (in 2022), last season’s incredible FA Cup quarter-final victory and the Premier League draw in April.
“Each time, we have done almost everything right; we have executed our game plan, fought for every ball and demonstrated our capabilities with some sensational goals.”
