    Oxford 0-0 Blackburn

Blackburn took a while to get going in midweek during their 3-0 win against Portsmouth but what of their efforts against Oxford?

They race into Oxford's half of the field early on but Makhtar Gueye - who scored in that win over Pompey - fouls newly signed Michal Helik and the hosts prosper, working it upfield for Przemyslaw Placheta to fire from outside the box.

His effort, however, is blocked away by Blackburn.

Tony Mowbray takes the acclaim of the Albion fans

It's time for West Bromwich Albion fans to say a warm welcome back as Tony Mowbray returns to The Hawthorns - almost 16 years on from leaving and only days after getting an 'all clear' on the health front.

He's not taking charge. That can wait until Tuesday night's Middlesbrough game - another emotional occasion for Mogga back on his native Teesside.

Instead Albion remain in the charge of Chris Brunt and his three-man caretaker team.

But Mowbray is given a rapturous reception as, in his new title of head coach, he is applauded onto Albion's pastures green. Loud chants of "There's Only One Tony Mowbray" from the Smethwick End.

Sheffield United could move to the top of the Championship with victory over Norwich this afternoon.

The Blades ended a run of three games without a win (D1 L2) by beating Watford 2-1 away from home last time out in the league.

They welcome a Canaries side on an impressive four-game unbeaten run, drawing one and winning three of those, including 2-1 victory over Coventry in their most recent league fixture.

A play-off spot is still within touching distance for Johannes Hoff Thorup’s team, who are currently five points back from the top six.

It will be a big ask to come away with anything from Bramall Lane, though, where Sheffield United have lost just once this season (W9 D2).

A battle of two sides with differences in form at the Kassam Stadium today.

Oxford United, reinvigorated under Gary Rowett, welcome Blackburn Rovers with a five-game unbeaten run under their belts.

During that time they have claimed 11 points and clawed themselves away from the Championship's bottom three.

Blackburn on the other hand, ended a five-game winless run in midweek with a thumping 3-0 win over Portsmouth, moving up to fifth in the process.

Despite their inconsistent form coming into their trip south, Blackburn have reason to be optimistic. Rowett has won just twice in 12 attempts against Blackburn as a manager and Rovers have lost just once in their past 12 league games against the Us.

  12. Latte Lath starts for Boro at Pompeypublished at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January

    Portsmouth v Middlesbrough (15:00 GMT)

Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath starts at Portsmouth despite being linked to MSL club Atlanta United.

The US side have submitted a £16m bid for the Ivory Coast international. However, Boro boss Michael Carrick confirmed earlier this week that Latte Lath will be involved for the long trip to the south coast.

After six consecutive away defeats for Portsmouth - including Wednesday's chastening 3-0 loss to Blackburn, during which Rovers coasted to victory with three goals in 15 minutes - there will be some relief among John Mousinho's camp that his side are at home.

Pompey have picked up 16 points on home ground this season, compared to just seven on their travels.

  13. Rams and Hornets in need of a liftpublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January

    Derby v Watford (15:00 GMT)

Two teams without a win in three games, just one point picked up between them.

Derby and Watford are both very much in need of three points to avoid turning a blip into a slump, yet both for very different reasons.

The Hornets sit right in the mix for the play-offs - three points off sixth-placed Middlesbrough - yet with 14 points from a possible 18, can't afford to slip further away.

Derby, on the other hand, have won just two of their past 13 games in all competitions, a run which has seen them slide down the table.

If results go against them today they could end the weekend 20th in the table and just a point above the drop zone.

  14. Robins look to extend unbeaten run as they face Sky Bluespublished at 14:48 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January

Coventry v Bristol City (15:00 GMT)

A run of 10 points from 12 has seen Liam Manning's Bristol City side climb to ninth in the table and just four points off a play-off spot.

They face a Coventry side without a win in three but unbeaten at home under Frank Lampard.

The Robins will be without Marcus McGuane for the match as he was ruled out with concussion after picking up a head injury against Wolves in the FA Cup, but Rob Dickie is fit to return to the squad after missing the cup tie through illness.

Coventry are still without injured top scorer Haji Wright and Ephron Mason-Clark.

Today heralds the beginning of a new era at Kenilworth Road as Matt Bloomfield takes charge of Luton Town for the first time.

The former Wycombe boss, who arrived at the club earlier this week following the departure of Rob Edwards, said he had already built up "quite a big knowledge base" having observed the squad in training and on video.

The Hatters are 20th in the table, just two points above the relegation places, and take on Preston North End hoping to progress further away from the bottom three.

"There's absolute belief in the group that we've got here. Some of these boys played in the Premier League last year, some have been recruited for millions of pounds, we've got some very good footballers," Bloomfield told BBC Three Counties Radio.

West Brom v Stoke (15:00 GMT)

Chris Brunt will take temporary charge of West Brom for the final time today against Stoke before Tony Mowbray returns to the hot seat at The Hawthorns again.

The 61-year-old - who is here today - has been appointed the new Baggies head coach, three weeks after previous boss Carlos Corberan left to join La Lige side Valencia.

On the pitch, West Brom have been in inconsistent form, winning three, losing two and drawing two of their past seven games, including a stalemate last time out at Swansea.

But they have been in victory mode on home soil, winning the past three, and are just one point off the play-off spots.

Stoke have also steadied the ship slightly since Narcis Pelach left, first under interim coach Ryan Shawcross and now new boss Mark Robins.

The Potters had an impressive 1-0 win over Sunderland and two goalless draws since a run of five defeats from six, as well knocking the Black Cats out of the FA Cup last weekend, though Robins is in search of his first league win.

    FT: Cardiff 3-0 Swansea

    Owain Tudur Jones
Former Swansea City and Wales midfielder on BBC Radio Cymru

There's a lot of work to be done.

Swansea, even when they won back-to-back games after Christmas, we were talking about play-offs, but I never thought they were quite good enough to reach the play-offs.

Obviously, I still feel the same.

They need a few extra players. There's no question that the squad isn't strong enough to compete week after week.

This away problem has to be sorted as soon as possible.

I'm not sure I could have done what Omer Riza done today and lead this Cardiff team and that is exactly the kind of performance he would have wanted.

At the end there emotions are running high I think he played his part in the red card and he will be disappointed with that.

On the whole he will be absolutely delighted with his players.

Goals change games, it's damage limitation from Swansea's point of view. You've got to be humble in defeat and humble when you win.

We've had our good dinners over the last five years, it was the manner Swansea lost that football game was really disappointing for me. The body language certainly in the last 20 minutes was disappointing from the players.

Swansea were getting suffocated left, right and centre and couldn't do nothing about it.

What an outstanding performance, particularly second half. At half time I didn't see three nil. The two goals within 6/7 minutes was the key to the victory, to the the third and put the icing on the cake and make it more comfortable was outstanding

The game plan from Cardiff City was spot on, they were aggressive, they were right at it. The midfield three of Ralls, Robinson and Calum Chambers that is where the game was won for me.

This Cardiff City team have been on the wrong end of this result for a number of seasons now, they've had to suck it up and you can't begrudge them the victory today.
