I think Arne Slot has made so many changes because he wants to get the team on the training ground.

He needs time on the training ground to try to integrate these players.

There is a bigger picture with this team that he has selected tonight.

If Liverpool lose tonight having made so many pointless changes to significantly weaken a losing team, then if we lose at the weekend and then against Real Madrid I think the hierarchy might have some questions for Slot. It's one thing not knowing your best 11, but this is poor, poor management.

    Tottenham Hotspur

The feel-good factor is back at Tottenham. After finishing a dismal 17th last season, they now sit third under the guidance of Thomas Frank.

Eddie Howe was complimentary of Spurs pre-match: "Tactically, very interesting and very versatile. They build up in lots of different ways. Very aggressive off the ball.

"They have different ways to make things happen, including set plays. Very well organised and ultimately, set plays are a big guide to that. Credit to him [Frank] and his coaching staff for what they're doing."

There is no back-up on the bench for Liverpool.

It is a very untried and untested team with an untried and untested bench.

Are these the most inexperienced substitutes Liverpool have ever named?

I am super excited to watch Max Dowman, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri all starting tonight. There is always this excitement that comes with watching youngsters playing football at the highest level and I hope they perform well.

It is going to be a big night in the career of goalkeeper Freddie Woodman as he makes his competitive debut for Liverpool following his summer move from Preston North End.

He could not have chosen a more fitting opponent.

The 28-year-old was born in Croydon, grew up in south London and supported Crystal Palace as a youngster. He was at the Eagles academy until the age of 16 but did not make a senior appearance for them, before he moved to Newcastle where he stayed until 2022 when he joined Preston.

"I used to go down to Selhurst with my grandad as he had a season ticket down there," said Woodman. "I was a ballboy a few times and also a mascot and I just used to love it. Being a south London lad, being a Crystal Palace fan was just born into me really."

    Iwan Roberts

Former Wales striker Iwan Roberts says the pressure is off Swansea City as they host Manchester City.

"I think they've lost their last seven against Manchester City. I think in their last 13, they've lost 12, just one draw in the Premier League to show for, but I think it's a night for them to enjoy," Roberts told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast.

"It's a tall order, but I'm sure it's a night that Swansea fans will really enjoy."

Imagine suggesting two months ago that Liverpool fans would be going into meltdown over squad rotation in a home League Cup tie against Crystal Palace.

    Liverpool

Liverpool are trying to get their season back on track - so a game against Crystal Palace is probably the last thing they need right now.

Palace followed up their penalty shootout win over the Reds in the Community Shield with a 2-1 league victory against Arne Slot's side at Selhurst Park last month.

The Eagles are also unbeaten in their past three visits to Anfield.

If Palace win tonight, Liverpool will have lost to Oliver Glasner's side three times in the space of 80 days.

Is there a reason that Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolves and Newcastle can make ten changes to their team, but when Liverpool do it there has to be a national inquest?

Courageous by Slot, and it's the right call. First XI need time on the training pitch - and some rest - to get back on track. Second string also need games. He'll get brickbats if it doesn't work, but it's the right call.

It has not been a good period for Liverpool on a whole. They have gone with a youthful line-up, you are wondering what Arne Slot's thought process is behind that.

It puts more pressure on Slot's shoulders because if they don't win tonight it doesn't look great.

No disrespect to the XI, but I'd have thought Slot would have prioritised a League Cup win here to get some momentum back.

I love Arne Slot for all he’s done for Liverpool, but leaving Kerkez in the team, and choosing to play two left-backs is laughable.
