  1. Why Martinez move makes sense for Man Utdpublished at 08:28 British Summer Time 1 September

The social media videos doing the rounds on Emi Martinez's mistakes are missing the point around why Manchester United are considering signing the Aston Villa goalkeeper.

The problem at United is not mistakes, they realise every goalkeeper makes them. The problem is the impact they are having.

Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana both seem to be struggling with the weight of the criticism being directed at them.

United staff are also aware their other target, 23-year-old Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Sanne Lammens, is untested at the highest level.

Martinez has vast experience. Crucially, he also has the kind of personality that means he will not be affected by external noise, indeed, he has given the impression of thriving on it.

Edwin van der Sar was 34 when Sir Alex Ferguson signed him. That proved to be a masterstroke.

    Martinez is 32.

Emi Martinez has tarnished his legacy at Villa. His agents have been talking to Man Utd all summer but they leave it to the last day to get a deal done. It stinks. Utd can have him, he’s past his best. You all know what sort of character he is.

  3. Martinez Villa future uncertain amid Man Utd interestpublished at 08:20 British Summer Time 1 September

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport Chief Football News Reporter

The future of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez remains uncertain amid interest from Manchester United.

The 32-year-old was not included in Villa's matchday squad on Sunday as they fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace.

After the game, manager Unai Emery told Sky Sports the club "have to fix" the situation.

He added: "One of the situations we are speaking about is Emi Martinez, but we will see tomorrow. We have to fix it with him."

Aston Villa are yet to win a Premier League game this season, losing two and drawing one of their opening three games.

They are also the only club across England's top four divisions to have not scored a league goal so far this season.

Whole Isak situation is depressing. Newcastle have looked amateurish and lightweight in negotiations all summer and clearly should have locked Ekitike and others in quickly. Liverpool hold all the cards now and league is theirs to lose.

If Liverpool don’t win the league, after securing Isak and potentially Guehi, it will surely be considered a huge failure.

  5. 'If Man Utd get rid of players, a goalkeeping signing becomes more likely'published at 08:14 British Summer Time 1 September

    David Ornstein
The Athletic's football correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester United are considering a goalkeeper signing this deadline day.

Senne Lammens, of Royal Antwerp, is a player they have been considering as a priority.

There was also some evaluation and targeting of [Emiliano] Martinez some time ago. They made a loan offer. That conversation has been reheated but it is unclear which of those two goalkeepers they would go for if they make a signing.

I think Lammens actually might be more probable but a final decision hasn't been made, as far as I know.

It is plausible that they finish the window without signing a goalkeeper and stick with their current options.

However, it will depend on outgoings. If they get rid of players then a goalkeeping signing becomes more likely.

  6. Isak situation felt untenable but danger it sets precedentpublished at 08:08 British Summer Time 1 September

A draining saga is coming to an end, but there won’t be wild celebrations on Tyneside following Alexander Isak's departure. Far from it.

Newcastle United fans had long made their feelings clear about Isak, who missed the club’s opening three games of the season, and reintegration always felt like a big ask.

But Newcastle are losing one of the best strikers in the world to the champions, with just hours left to bring in another centre-forward to help ease the burden on record signing Nick Woltemade.

While the situation felt untenable, there is a danger this sets a precedent for players who want out in the future given Isak still had three years left on his contract.

All eyes are now on whether Newcastle can sign another striker today after the club previously had bids rejected for Wolves centre-forward Jorgen Strand Larsen and Brentford's Yoane Wissa.

Convincing clubs to sell such goalscorers is an almighty challenge - not least when there is so little time left for them to find a worthy replacement.

A bit disappointed to hear Thomas Frank playing down the need to sign any more attacking players for Spurs - but he's the expert.

    Chris, Ripon

Spurs as normal short of quality. Lagging behind the others with spending power. Another deep sigh of a window for us.

Tottenham still need a striker in my opinion. After Saturdays performance vs Bournemouth was utterly shocking.

    Yoane WissaImage source, Getty Images
    • Alexander Isak - All eyes are on Liverpool, where Newcastle United striker Isak will undergo a medical today before completing a British record £125m move.
    • Yoane Wissa - Newcastle, meanwhile, have had bids for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa rejected throughout the window. The DR Congo international released a statement on Sunday calling on the Bees to "keep their word" and let him leave before the deadline.
    • Jorgen Strand Larsen - The Magpies have also had two bids rejected for Wolves striker Strand Larsen, but Wolves head coach Vitor Pereira says the Norway forward "will stay with us".
    • Artem Dovbyk - Should the Wissa deal not come off, a report in the Sun, external suggests Newcastle are interested in bringing in Roma's £30m-rated Ukraine striker Dovbyk on loan, with a view to buy.
    • Marc Guehi - Back to Liverpool and the Reds' pursuit of Crystal Palace's England centre-back Guehi. But will the Eagles find a suitable replacement in time to sanction the deal?
    • Ederson - Manchester City's Brazil goalkeeper looks to be on his way to Turkish side Fenerbahce, which could trigger another transfer deck of cards.
    • Gianluigi Donnarumma - The Italy stopper is waiting in the wings as a potential replacement after losing his place as Paris St-Germain's number one, but could Manchester United also be interested?
    • Emiliano Martinez - United have also been heavily linked with Aston Villa's Argentine goalkeeper after a difficult start to the season for both Andre Onana and Altay Bayinder at Old Trafford.
    • Kobbie Mainoo - And finishing this round-up at Old Trafford, England midfielder Mainoo has reportedly asked to be sent out on loan, but manager Ruben Amorim is eager for him to stay and fight for a first-team place. Watch this space.

We're just going to dip in and out of stuff as and when, I reckon.

While I remember though, here are some of the big deals that could get done today...

  10. Villa explore move for Sanchopublished at 07:53 British Summer Time 1 September

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport Chief Football News Reporter

Aston Villa are exploring a move for Manchester United’s out-of-favour winger Jadon Sancho.

The 25-year-old turned down a move to Italian side Roma earlier in the window while there had also been interest from Juventus.

Sancho spent the last 18 months on loan at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea but neither club made the deal permanent. Chelsea paid a £5m penalty to United for going back on an obligation to sign Sancho.

Any deal will not be connected to United’s interest in Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

United sources are stressing they will not sign Martinez and Royal Antwerp keeper Sanne Lammens, who they have also discussed, but there has been no clarity around which player, if any, they will choose to bolster their goalkeeping department.

  12. Isak finally on the waypublished at 07:46 British Summer Time 1 September

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Newcastle United's top brass met Isak last Monday, ironically before they met Liverpool at St James' Park, in an attempt to provoke a change of heart from the Swede, who has staged a one-man rebellion to move to Anfield, but it has fallen on deaf ears and the longest transfer story of the summer is finally at a conclusion.

It is a bitter end for a player once idolised by the Toon Army, confirming what was iconic status by scoring what turned out to be the winning goal as Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup - their first domestic trophy for 70 years - against Liverpool, the club he has been so desperate to join.

The dominoes started to fall, with Newcastle's deal for Nick Woltemade and Liverpool finally secured their man on Sunday night, with a medical set for Monday before Isak signs a six-year deal.

  13. 'There's a way in which Newcastle see it as a £130m deal'published at 07:40 British Summer Time 1 September

It was late last night that a protracted saga, which has gone on for the entire summer, the clubs finally reached an agreement.

Newcastle accepted a proposal from Liverpool. It's a £125m flat fee, so that's the cost to Liverpool, but with some savings, known as solidarity payments, there's a way in which Newcastle see it as a £130m deal, to them.

Either way, it smashes the British transfer record, which means Liverpool will have done that twice this transfer window. Alexander Isak will undergo a medical with Liverpool today before completing a deadline day move and bringing this saga to an end.

  16. Betis agree deal with Man Utd for Antonypublished at 07:28 British Summer Time 1 September

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport Chief Football News Reporter

Real Betis have agreed a €25m (£21.65m) deal with Manchester United to sign Brazilian winger Antony.

United thought they had an agreement to sell Antony in place on Friday, only for Betis to issue a statement saying they were withdrawing their offer.

Discussions continued over the weekend to try to break the impasse.

United sources now say that has happened, with the player clear to have a medical.

It is thought the move will be subject to a hefty sell-on clause.

United sources have indicated the deal is €22m fixed + €3m bonuses + 50% net sell-on + zero pay-off to the player. The deal on Friday broke down due to Antony wanting part of his United contract to be paid off.

There always seems to be scope for forgiveness in football but perhaps the saga with Newcastle United and Alexander Isak simply had to end in this window.

Isak had made it clear he wanted to leave the club and the Magpies fans had started to turn in their masses.

The forward was nowhere to be seen during Newcastle's 0-0 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday evening but that didn't stop the Toon Army from making their feelings known.

"We don't care about Isak," they chanted during Saturday's goalless draw at Leeds United. "He don't care about me, all we care about is NUFC."

What a contrast to the reception record signing Nick Woltemade was given.

The new arrival was mobbed by supporters gathered outside as he made his way into the stadium before the game and, on this evidence, the club will need the Germany striker to hit the ground running, particularly with the Isak saga seemingly nearly its conclusion.
