Now Chelsea have equalised and Tottenham have lost vice captain Cristian Romero to injury - just 15 minutes into his comeback from a toe problem.
It poses the question, how much has under fire Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou gambled?
The Australian ended his last match arguing with a couple of fans in the 1-0 defeat away at Bournemouth.
Now, whether he wins, loses or draws - he could lose Romero for another period of time.
There is a similar question about the fitness of Micky van de Ven, who was a surprise selection today, having been out with a hamstring problem.

It was a big risk with both centre-halves. You never thought they would last the game but it is a big blow.

That's staggering - after slipping for the second time to cost Chelsea a goal - Marc Cucurella changes his boots.
The Spain international did the universal sign for a substitute before rapidly changing his footwear on the side lines after Dejan Kulusevski's goal.
As well as Cucurella's errors, Robert Sanchez and Benoit Badiashile have also made unpunished errors through the intensity of Tottenham's press.
A breathless start and a change of footwear.

After a run of just two wins in 13 Premier League away games against Tottenham between 2006 and 2018 (D5 L6), Chelsea have now won four of their last five visits to Spurs (L1).
