    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham have confirmed the loan signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old reportedly rejected Spurs earlier this month but is now heading for north London with the option to buy for €55m (£45.7m) on a six-year deal.

Tel has made 83 appearances for Bayern since joining from French club Rennes in 2022, scoring 16 goals and providing seven assists.

It is the club's second in two days as they continue to contend with an injury crisis. They announced the signing of Austria defender Kevin Danso on loan from Ligue 1 club Lens on Sunday.

  4. 'Gonzalez ready to help us'published at 23:07 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Manchester City

Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain on new signing Nico Gonzalez: "Nico is a very talented young midfielder. He is an ideal acquisition for Manchester City.

"It was a difficult transfer to complete because his performances have been outstanding, and he has been such an important part of what Porto are doing this season.

"We are really happy we have managed to get this done before the window closed. He is ready to help us in the second half of the season as we compete in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Club World Cup."

  5. Man City spend big in January windowpublished at 23:05 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Manchester City

Nico Gonzalez (£50m) becomes Manchester City's fourth signing of the window.

Forward Omar Marmoush (£59m) and defenders Abdukodir Khusanov (£33.6m) and Vitor Reis (£29.6m) joined earlier in the window.

Gonzalez's arrival takes Manchester City's spending this window up to about £180m, compared to £177m for the other 19 teams in the Premier League combined.

That's the second-highest spend in a winter window ever, behind Chelsea in 2023, who spent €330m (£275m).

  6. Who is Gonzalez?published at 23:03 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Manchester City

Nico Gonzalez scored in a 1-0 win against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League to help Porto through to the knockout phase play-offs.

Now, he has joined the reigning Premier League champions.

A graduate of Barcelona's La Masia academy, the 23-year-old made his senior debut in 2021 and made 37 first-team appearances for the Catalan club before spending the 2022-23 season on loan at Valencia. In July 2023 he joined Porto in a deal worth around €8.5m (£7m).

Gonzalez was initially seen as a holding midfielder but by 2023 then-Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez saw him more as a box-to-box player.

At Porto Gonzalez has played in a double midfield pivot and further forward, scoring five goals and providing five assists in 17 league games this season.

City's midfield has struggled in the absence of the injured Rodri, with a lack of physicality abundantly clear during the 5-1 defeat by Arsenal on Sunday.

The 6ft 2in Gonzalez could help in that department, though he is not a single pivot and isn't a like-for-like replacement for the Ballon d'Or winner.

    Manchester City

Well we've been waiting for Manchester City to get this one over the line and they have just in time.

Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez joins Pep Guardiola's side for a fee of €60m (£50m) on a four-and-a-half year deal.

The 23-year-old can operate as a defensive, central or attacking player and it is hoped the Spaniard will bolster City's midfield in the absence of Ballon d'Or winner Rodri as well as slotting into the team once he returns.

  13. 'Tel is a versatile player'published at 22:53 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on The Football News Show: Deadline Day Special

What Tottenham have got in Mathys Tel is a player that can adapt, can run with the ball, can create opportunites. He has some attacking flare, we know that, it is defensively where there may be some questions.

For Ange Postecoglou he is a versatile player, he may start him in the central position but the rotations in the team he could be used in the wide areas.

Marco Asensio to Villa is a really interesting debate. He won a lot at Real Madrid but as a squad player, not a proper starter or superstar. He can play in different positions, right side or right winger is probably his best position, where he can come inside onto his left foot.

He played a lot of the season as a number nine for PSG, he can play on the left too or as a second striker. Unai Emery will have the luxury to play him where he needs him. Plus there is the winning mentality and the experience that he will bring to the squad too.

  15. 'Rashford has to fall in love with football again'published at 22:47 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Phil Jones
Former Manchester United defender on The Football News Show: Deadline Day Special

I disagree with the comment the fan made [on the video] there that they are happy to see him leave. I don't think they are.

He is a Manchester United boy and loves playing for the club. Over the past 18 months, it hasn't really happened for him.

He has unbelievable talent. He needs a bit of support and love and I think it is best for both parties that he can get playing somewhere else.

When he came into the squad, with England, we came into the changing room and all the talk after the game was 'Wow, what a player this is.'

He has just lost his confidence at the moment and I hope he can get it back. He has to fall in love with football again. I would love nothing more than seeing Marcus Rashford scoring goals again.

But he has to want it for himself.

Aston Villa's hectic activity in the last 48 hours will be completed with loan signing of Chelsea defender Axel Disasi.

He joins other loan deals to sign Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio from Manchester United and Paris St. Germain respectively.

Emery made his desire for new acquisitions clear after the defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday night and Villa have delivered for a manager who has earned that trust and backing with his superb work since succeeding Steven Gerrard in November 2022.

  20. 'Tel is a risk worth taking'published at 22:38 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Phil Jones
Former Manchester United defender on The Football News Show: Deadline Day Special

Spurs are in a position where they might have to take a risk.

They have had a lot of injuries. Ange Postecoglou has had to deal with a lot behind the scenes. I think Tel is a player that could come in and have an impact.

It is a risk but it is a risk definitely worth taking.
