Jarrod Bowen's equaliser earned a point for West Ham as they began life under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo with a draw at Everton.

Michael Keane scored an early opener for Everton with a super bullet header from James Garner's whipped cross from the left.

Everton had the best of the first half, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish particularly lively, and the former came closest to extending the Toffees' lead when he glanced a header narrowly wide.

But Everton were unable to take advantage of their early dominance and Bowen made them pay on 65 minutes when he found space inside the box and his vicious left-footed shot flew in via a deflection off Keane.

West Ham ended the game on top and Nuno will take heart from his side's reponse to the early setback, though the draw means the Hammers are still second from bottom with just four points.

Everton move up the table to ninth place, level on eight points with four clubs including Chelsea.

David Moyes' Everton will feel they could have taken three points from this game, but they lacked the cutting edge in front of goal.

West Ham's poor marking in the box allowed Keane the space to score his opener but otherwise the home side could not turn neat football - with Grealish at the heart of it - into clear-cut chances.

The England midfielder was particularly adept at winning fouls - five in total - in dangerous areas and Everton were often threatening from the resulting set-pieces.

They managed 12 shots, six of which hit the target, but few of those did much to test West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

The draw means Everton are winless in their past three league games but there was enough spark in this performance to encourage Moyes before a tough home game against in-form Crystal Palace and then a trip to Manchester City.

Nuno has taken over a West Ham side in the middle of a horrible run of form, having lost four of their first five games, and he will hope this draw marks the start of an improved new era.

While West Ham's build-up play was often underwhelming, forward Crysencio Summerville and left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf were bright sparks down the Hammers' left.

Dutchman Summerville carried the ball well and looked to stretch the Everton back-line out of position, while Diouf was too much for Toffees right-back Jake O'Brien to handle at times and his cross led to Bowen's equaliser.

West Ham's goal immediately made them much more threatening as they took the game to Everton, picking up their first points in the Premier League since the end of August.
