  3. Story of the day?published at 15:29 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Another busy Friday of Premier League news conferences draws to a close but there is no doubt about which story has dominated the day.

Manchester United have officially got their man with Sporting boss Ruben Amorim set to take charge on 11 November with a deal that runs until 2027.

Until then Ruud Van Nistelrooy will continue to take interim charge for Premier League matches against Chelsea and Leicester and the visit of PAOK in the Europa League.

  4. 'The first thing he needs to get hold of is the dressing room'published at 15:27 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Amorim becomes new Man Utd manager

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Rene Meulenstein, who was a first-team coach under Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United, on the need for short-term success for Ruben Amorim:

"When you win games, you bide time. And when you win games, the players will start to listen to your message. The next thing then is, to get your strategies across, your vision. A clear vision, that players buy into.

"And you need to keep winning games. Just keep winning games and you get that train rolling on the track.

"The first thing he needs to get hold of is that dressing room and create a culture that's a positive one, where the players feel good. I don't think that's the case at Man United.

"But, he comes in at a difficult time because the season is up and running, there's no pre-season. He has to get a hold of the players very quickly and pick the ones that fit his style of play.

"And the games come thick and fast. In the Premier League, in the cups, in the Europa League, you've got no time really. And when he comes in in November, all the players are away on international duty. So, it is not an easy task".

  5. 'Winning football matches will get the fans on side'published at 15:25 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Amorim becomes new Man Utd manager

    Martin O'Neill
Former Celtic manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

Of course you have to make players win. At Celtic, for instance, if you do want to talk about it and it was some years ago, at the time, I think we had beaten by Rangers for the title by 21 points, so there was no confidence about the team at all, so you have to instil some level of confidence and confidence in from scrambling a couple of results early on.

We had a big, big moment against a very, very strong Rangers side. Six games into it, we beat them 6-2 and that set a massive mindset for us, so it was all about winning. What you say to players during the course of that time is that every manager has a different message but overall, it is to regain confidence. Some players are capable of doing that. I’ve also signed some very, very good players and inherited some very good players, like Paul Lambert, like Henrik Larsson, like Johan Mjallby.

Then, of course, you are a new manager coming in, they will look at you for a while and say ‘does he really know this’. Then, winning football matches gets them on your side, that’s the most important thing and we were able to win early. However we did it, that’s how.

  6. Amorim getting a hefty pay risepublished at 15:22 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

If anyone is wondering about the attraction of Manchester United to Ruben Amorim, consider this.

It is thought Amorim is earning around £3m-a-year with Sporting.

It is estimated he will more than treble his salary at United to around the £10m mark.

That puts him way behind Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola but will shove him into the Premier League's high earners.

It is not just about the money - United is a big attraction despite their strife - but most people would think twice if they were offered three times as much as they are currently earning to do the same job somewhere else.

  8. Dalot 'really excited' to work with Amorimpublished at 15:14 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Amorim becomes new Man Utd manager

    Manchester United

Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot has said he's relishing getting the chance to work with Portuguese compatriot Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

"He is a fantastic coach and knows what he wants. Very demanding is what I can expect. It's a perfect match for a club like this," Dalot told Sky Sports.

"The Premier League suits people from Portugal. We have a culture of constantly trying to improve ourselves as we come from a small country.

"I really hope that it is one more case. I am really excited to start working with him."

  9. Amorim's Man Utd coaching teampublished at 15:12 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester United have said they will confirm Ruben Amorim's coaching team at a later date.

Ruud van Nistelrooy did say on Thursday he was intending to go back to being United's assistant manager when his four-match stint in charge is over.

That seems unlikely as Amorim could bring as many as five coaches with him.

Two, Carlos Fernandes and Adélio Cândido have been with Amorim since he started out as a manager with Casa Pia in 2019. The pair are only 29 and 28 respectively now. Emanuel Ferro, goalkeeping coach and sports scientist Paulo Barreira are others who might also move to Old Trafford.

It is believed Amorim's backroom team will be confirmed before they start work at United's Carrington training ground later this month.

  11. Eze, Ward and Lerma out but Doucoure and Richards nearing returnpublished at 15:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Wolves v Crystal Palace (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner gave injury updates on several members of his squad.

On Eberechi Eze, who limped off in the midweek Carabao Cup win over Aston Villa: "He's injured. He has a hamstring injury and we will miss him for at least against Wolves and against Fulham. Then we have the international break, and then let’s see, but he will be out for those two games.

"There is hope [he will return after that], but it will be very ambitious to have him back after the international break. I know we have a great medical department and he will work hard, so let’s see."

On right-back Joel Ward: "Joel missed the Aston Villa game, but it’s not that serious. He will miss the Wolves game but should be available against Fulham."

On midfielder Jefferson Lerma: "Jefferson is also out, at least until the international break."

On midfielder Cheick Doucoure, who has been out with a long-term Achilles problem: "Cheick Doucoure will be back in the squad maybe earlier than we expected. Of course, we’re missing many players now. For sure, he can’t be at 100%, but it’s important that he’s with us."

On defender Chris Richards: "Next week Chris Richards should train with us if everything goes the right way, and that’s the positive news."

As things stand, the Eagles will be without seven first-team players for Saturday's match.

  12. Wharton to have surgery on groin injurypublished at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Wolves v Crystal Palace (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner began his news conference by confirming midfielder Adam Wharton will have surgery on an ongoing groin issue:

"We took the final decision he will have surgery so he won’t be available for Wolves. He tried [to train] today but there’s too much pain and it makes no sense.

"He’s really struggled the last weeks and months and so now we took the decision he will have surgery, and we hope to have him back after, let’s say, four weeks."

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has released his second single called 'What's Luv?'

Iwobi, who has made over 260 top-flight appearances, made history earlier this year by becoming the first Premier League footballer to have a single released, with his debut song ‘Don’t Shoot’.

"Music has always been a passion of mine, and a way for me to express myself away from football," he said. "Music is a great tool, and I’ve always used it as a productive way to share how I feel. Historically no Premier League player has brought out music with their name and face attached to it, but I like to be different and make a difference.

"Growing up in an area of London that is challenging for some people, I know how hard it can be and I’m grateful to have a platform to try and make a difference. Alongside the work we do in the community, I hope that my music is another way of proving that young people do not have to feel they have to fit in just one box.

"I want them to be encouraged to achieve their dreams, to put their focus into positive things. Creating music doesn’t take anything away from my football, it helps me switch off."

  16. 'We are just going to attack it full throttle'published at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Wolves v Crystal Palace (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Wolves

On building on the momentum of the draw with Brighton, Wolves boss Gary O'Neil said: "A moment like that puts some energy into the team. We didn’t lack belief but it was a big response from a tough situation.

"Our group is ready to go tomorrow. We understand we’ve had a tough start to the season and we’d love to have more than two points but our belief is intact. Any team that can come from two nil down with five minutes left shows they have real fight.

"We are just going to attack it full throttle [against Crystal Palace]. It won’t always look pretty because of the style of the team we’re playing against, but from the moment we get there until the final whistle we will give it everything we’ve got."

  17. Johnstone and Lemina expected to returnpublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

  20. Saints need to 'see a game through' and 'put things right'published at 14:44 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Southampton v Everton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Southampton

Southampton boss Russell Martin on whether the last two results against Manchester City and Stoke City will have a "cumulative effect" on his side's confidence: "I hope so. I don't think the players have ever lost or lacked belief in what they are doing. I think good results help, good performances help and good processes help. There was a level of pride after the Manchester City performance last week and a really good feeling after the Stoke City game."

Martin added that he feels his players have been "fighting" and "competitive", despite still not picking up a win in the Premier League this season: "We haven't felt like we have come away with what we should have, but we have to make sure we put it right. It is a long old season and we have been so competitive and so close.

"We just need to see one through now - that will help us hugely."
