If appointed manager of any club I would; tell players not to cheat or feign injury, never, other than the captain, let players speak to the referee, get them fit enough to ride in the Tour de France for 24 consecutive days let alone play two 90 minute matches in a week.

  2. FA Cup: The EFL sides in danger of an upsetpublished at 11:10 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

When you think of the FA Cup, you instantly think of dramatic shocks and minnows slaying giants. A 'cupset'.

It has become an almost inevitable tradition of this famous old competition and the first round this weekend has thrown up plenty of opportunities for just that.

Of the 32 non-league clubs to have made it this far, 24 of them will come up against EFL opposition. But which of those fixtures will be making the headlines?

Here Ben Ashton takes a look at five first-round ties where they could be a 'cupset':

    • Burton Albion v Scarborough Athletic
    • Tranmere Rovers v Oldham Athletic
    • Worthing v Morecambe
    • Southend United v Charlton Athletic
    • Stockport County v Forest Green Rovers

    (All kick-offs Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Talking of United's midfield quality, or lack of, worth remembering Ugarte was dynamite under Amorim, Kobbie Mainoo is a superstar in the making (and England first choice) and Bruno is the most creative player in the league. Then multiple UCL winner Casemiro, England's Mount, Eriksen who has hit form AND a youth team full of talent. It's not too bad, just need to get a song out of them.....

While the Scottish League Cup continues with the semi-final match-ups this weekend, the FA Cup resumes with the first round proper.

Here's a look back at the best goals of last season's competition, including Manchester United's team effort in the final against derby rivals Manchester City, finished off calmly by Kobbie Mainoo.

If I was in charge of Cardiff City for one day I would; 1) paint the Bob Bank top tier seats blue from red 2) sign Rubin Colwill to a 10 year deal 3) commission a statue of Peter Whittingham to be built

Celtic v Aberdeen (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

Aberdeen beat Rangers 2-1 on Wednesday to remain joint leaders of the Scottish Premiership with Celtic, nine points clear of the Gers after 10 games this season.

The joint leaders will face each other on Saturday in the first of this season's Scottish League Cup semi-finals on Saturday. Rangers then face Motherwell on Sunday (15:00).

If the atmosphere at Hampden is anything like that at Pittodrie on Wednesday then it should be some weekend.

  9. 'Thrilling yet terrifying' - the fan managing Albion Rovers for the daypublished at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Albion Rovers v Hearts B (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Amy Canavan
    BBC Sport Scotland

"Cosplaying as Sir Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinho might not go down too well, it could be a disaster."

It's the job we all think and say we could do, in the knowledge our words will never be put to the test. A football manager.

But this weekend, Duncan McKay, an avowed football fanatic, Hibernian supporter and star of BBC Scotland's A View from the Terrace, will do just that as he takes charge of 142-year-old club Albion Rovers for their Lowland League match against Hearts B.

It's not a gimmick or a schtick, this is a fully-fledged game of football, at Cliftonhill on Saturday at three o'clock, with all the bells and whistles and with three points on the line.

This could well be a world first as a fan - with zero managerial experience - swaps the stands for the dugout.

"In one way, it's thrilling, in the other, it's terrifying," McKay said of his Saturday shift to BBC Scotland.

  10. Ineos' impact at Man Utd should be judged from new manager onwardspublished at 10:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

It is less than 12 months since Ineos' co-ownership agreement with the Glazer family, when they took a stake of almost 30% in Manchester United.

Since that time, there has been a succession of high-profile arrivals at senior executive level, on the recruitment side and within the academy.

Ruben Amorim and his coaching team will complete the process.

It is from this point Sir Jim Ratcliffe should be judged as United owner.

Improvement won't come instantly but over time, it should come. Results, as always, will be the guide.

Scott, Preston: Don’t always agree with Souness, but I do this time. He is correct, the recruitment has really been based around ex-Ten Hag players even last summer when Ashworth and Wilcox were there. You don’t recruit for a manager as proven; they can be gone in a second. You find a style of play and recruit around that giving any manager who fits that style of play in the future a great chance. Look at LFC with Slot - clearly similar to Klopp in terms of how they want to play so no wonder Slot had all the tools ready to go.

  12. Pick of the stats - Gunners' defensive worries offer Magpies hope?published at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Newcastle v Arsenal (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

Newcastle have won two of their last three Premier League home games against Arsenal (L1), as many as they had in their previous 19 against the Gunners at St James' Park (D7 L10).

Arsenal have conceded nine goals in their last five Premier League games - more than they had in their previous 19 combined (eight). Mikel Arteta's side has shipped two or more goals in four of those five games, which is as many times as they had in their previous 27.

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at Arsenal's training ground

Mikel Arteta started his news conference today with a message to the people of Spain, who have been affected by floods which have so far claimed at least 158 lives.

"Before we start to talk about football I would like to talk about the terrible disaster that is affecting our country at the moment," Arteta said.

"I want to send from our side our thoughts, our full support and our sympathy to everyone being affected, all the individuals and obviously all the country that is pulling together to find the best possible solution in this difficult moment.

"From here I want to show my full support and ask everybody, in the way that they can, to show their support because it’s terrible what’s happening."

  14. 'All midfield options open' for Howepublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Newcastle v Arsenal (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

And finally from Eddie Howe, the Newcastle manager had this to say on his midfield: "All options are open. Sandro [Tonali] can definitely play both positions, whether it be higher or lower, and that's why we recruited him in a way, because he had that versatility. We didn't want to sign one player for one position. We needed that flexibility, especially going into a Champions League season that we faced.

"I think Bruno [Guimaraes] is slightly more complex in terms of where he plays, because I think he has natural strengths, where he gravitates to the ball and always wants to be on the ball, and that's his biggest strength. Playing him away from the ball is different for him, so that's something we will look at. I think good players can play anywhere, so let's see."

  15. Magpies 'need to be ready' for Gunners testpublished at 10:22 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Newcastle v Arsenal (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Arsenal: "They are a very good team with a very good manager. We play one of the most consistent teams in the Premier League for the last couple of years so the challenge for us is never easy, but we’re at home.

"Arsenal have done very well this season; they are very good from set-plays and a physical team. We need to be ready for that test."

  16. Amorim is Man Utd's first choicepublished at 10:20 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Ruben Amorim might have described this week as a soap opera as his Sporting future was debated all across the media.

However, for Manchester United it has been a relatively quick process.

As soon as it was decided they could not continue with Erik ten Hag as manager, after the defeat at West Ham which left the club 14th in the Premier League, Amorim was their top target.

I am told he is the only coach United have spoken to since the summer, when it was decided Ten Hag should remain in his job following the FA Cup final success against Manchester City.

    Newcastle United

Anthony Gordon watches on as Newcastle team-mate Alexander Isak scores against ChelseaImage source, PA Media

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak: "They both feel OK. We will assess how they feel today. Sometimes 48 hours after the game you can feel different to 24 hours. It's not necessarily a straight line with how the body feels. They have both had niggling injuries so we’ll make a decision today."

Speaking generally about the squad's fitness, Howe added: "There's just general fatigue, game fatigue. I think it was a good physical game against Chelsea - both on the Sunday [in the Premier League] and the Wednesday [in the Carabao Cup]. They were intense matches.

"Normal game fatigue you get 24 hours after a game and 48 hours, so we need to make sure that whoever enters the pitch against Arsenal is in their best condition."

  18. 'I'll pick the strongest team that I can'published at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Newcastle v Arsenal (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on team rotation: "They certainly give you the ability to change the team. Many times I've said I don't want the team to pick itself, but I also don't want to go game to game, changing too many players, because I don't think that's healthy either.

"So I believe in a settled team, but of course, with midweek fixtures especially, the intensity of games now, you have to have the ability to rotate. I'll pick the strongest team that I can, that can give us the best chance to win."

  19. Howe 'can't thank the supporters enough' for positive atmospherepublished at 10:12 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Newcastle v Arsenal (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on the atmosphere for Wednesday's Carabao Cup win against Chelsea: "It has been important, for a while here. The environment again was second to none. It was a sell out, it was a really good feeling. I can't thank the supporters enough for that. There was no hangover from recent results, it was really good and that helped us massively."
