Amorim becomes new Man Utd manager

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Portuguese football expert Tom Kunderton Ruben Amorim: "He's a fantastic communicator, so he gets his message across to players. You can even see it when he talks to the press, in his press conference, people are almost hanging on to every word that he says.

"He's a little bit similar to [Jose] Mourinho in that sense of his charisma, although he has a very different personality to Mourinho. He's always jovial, very polite, answers the questions calmly.

"I think he'll make a big impression in England. He's coming into a club that is comparable to how he came into Sporting, a sleeping giant, you could say."

Amorim seems like he has the potential to be a world-class manager. Although I worry for him more so than United. Even with a fresh ethos and direction, there's only so much you can do with a club that has needed gutting out for a decade, bad players on world-class wages with long contracts and a rotting infrastructure. I hope they finally let go of the past and revamp the club and give him the support he needs.

Amorim becomes new Man Utd manager

    BBC Radio 5 Live

BBC Sport chief football news reporter Simon Stone: "Manchester United's chief executive Omar Berrada went to Lisbon on Monday to try to negotiate. Amorim has a 30-day release clause in his contract and United were hoping to negotiate Sporting down from that. They have managed to do that in some sense but they would have wanted him quicker.

"Sporting wanted him to stay in charge for the Champions League game against Manchester City next Tuesday and a key league game [against Braga]. Sporting want to make a bit of a statement that they are not being pushed around. Manchester United have agreed to this.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in charge for Chelsea on Sunday, the Europa League game against PAOK on Thursday and then Leicester at Old Trafford next Sunday. After that we don't know what will happen to Van Nistelrooy but we do know that Amorim will join as manager."

Dave, Morecambe: Re: Neil, Reading 9:40 - We always hear the phrase '...someone who knows the club.' Did Pep know Man City? Did Klopp know Liverpool? Did Emery know Villa? I could go on. History shows 'knowing the club' is usually a recipe for disaster. See Souness at Liverpool, Dalglish at Liverpool c.2011/12 and Ole at Man Utd.

Gary, Oxford: That has to be a joke from Neil in Reading, right? Right?!? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Neil. Remember him?

Ben: All well and good, Neil, but didn't the fans also know and love Solskjaer, arguably even more so? And what about Mourinho? Getting a suitable manager at United has become a lottery, but in most ways that's because of the dreadful running of the club by the people above (including recruitment and wages etc), and the manager bears the brunt.

Amorim becomes new Man Utd manager

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Portuguese football expert Tom Kunderton what Ruben Amorim is like as a manager: "If he has anything like the impact and success he's had at Portugal, he will be a huge success at Manchester United. You can't really overstate or exaggerate what he's done here with Sporting, when they were an absolute mess, they were a complete chaos. They'd gone through three or four different managers [in quick succession] prior to his appointment.

"They were completely in the shadows of Benfica and Porto and he completely turned around the club in his first full season. The next season [they were] very close to winning the league again and last season came roaring back. I'm pretty certain if he stayed, Sporting would win the league again. He's had a huge impact on Portuguese football."

Anon: Could not disagree with Ian @ 12.25 anymore, Gareth Southgate was exactly what this club didn't need, he would have had a similar reign to Moyes, short, ineffective and a style of play that doesn't fit the united way. United have done incredibly well considering where they're at right now to land Amorim in my opinion.

Ruben Amorim has already won five major trophies in his short career so far.

With Sporting, Amorim has won Portugal's Primeira Liga and the Portuguese League Cup twice apiece.

He's also won the Portuguese Super Cup and, in his two months in charge of Braga previously, he also won the Portuguese League Cup.

Ruben Amorim's trophies as a manager:

    • Taca de Liga - Braga (2019-20)
    • Primeira Liga - Sporting (2020-21, 2023-24)
    • Taca de Liga - Sporting (2020-21, 2021-22)
    • Supertaca Candido de Oliveira - Sporting (2021)

    Paul Lambert
Former Scotland midfielder speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live

Somebody had to get the job and that is the beauty of football. When Erik ten Hag leaves they have got to go and get someone else and they have chosen [Ruben] Amorim. It is a great club and a great job for him to have a good run at it. Maybe he is the right man but time will tell.

He comes in with a good pedigree and it is a different type of football. It is different to when Jose Mourinho came over and he became that great manager after success in Europe (Uefa Cup and Champions League with Porto).

This is a little bit different. The great thing he has got is he has a great club and fanbase behind him. Hopefully he is a big success because I think everyone needs to see Manchester United up there.

I think it is the wrong manager/head coach for Man Utd. Face the facts that they are currently a mid-table side with some mediocre displays in Europe. They needed someone like Graham Potter who rebuilt Brighton without breaking the bank or Gareth Southgate. Now, like ETH, expectations are sky high.

Unfortunately, Ruben Amorim will follow the same pathway as those successful managers who trod the Old Trafford steps before him ... he will be ruined by a club that has real issues at its core. He should have stayed at Sporting to hone his craft.

As Manchester United supporters prepare to welcome a highly-rated and talented coach from outside of Europe's 'big five' leagues who has analysts swooning, they may be worried that it all sounds a bit familiar.

But in Ruben Amorim, they can be certain that in one crucial aspect he won’t be anything like Erik ten Hag.

The defining complaint about the sacked Dutchman was that after two-and-a-bit seasons the football was still formless and the tactical direction indecipherable.

Amorim, who will leave Portuguese champions Sporting to move to Old Trafford next month, is nothing if not a diligent - and decisive - tactical thinker.

From a ruthless press to proactive possession football, from a daring high line to a complexly shape-shifting 3-4-3 formation, the hallmarks of Amorim’s football will be etched into muscle memory in detailed training sessions.

And there will be valid concerns. Most prominent will be how a Manchester United squad built in Ten Hag’s image will cope with the change to a back three and a tactical system entirely at odds with what came before. It won’t suit everyone.

With United posting a £113m net loss for 2023-24, a £15m compensation bill for sacking Ten Hag and paying at least £8m to trigger Amorim's release clause, added to the £200m spent on summer transfers, the Portuguese is not likely to have much budget for January signings.

Here’s a look at the biggest winners and losers from Ruben Amorim’s appointment.

Not sure why there’s such hype around Amorim. Liverpool and West Ham both decided against him, there must’ve been a reason.

  20. Ratcliffe will take full responsibility for what happens going forwardpublished at 12:10 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Amorim becomes new Man Utd manager

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Despite reports to the contrary, Manchester United officials are adamant the club did not speak to anyone else about their vacancy, having decided Ruben Amorim fits their structure, headed up by sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.

It completes the overhaul triggered by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s part purchase of the club on Christmas Eve.

It is fairly obvious but United have focussed on Amorim’s style of play, personality, development of young players and energy as the key characteristics that make him suited to the role, although there is no suggestion Erik ten Hag lacked these qualities.

United feel they have recruited what club officials are calling "the most exciting young coach in Europe". Their optimism about the future has been familiar around all their previous managers post Sir Alex Ferguson.

This appointment is the first of the Ineos era. Club officials know after all the talk, Ratcliffe will take full responsibility for what happens going forward.
