1. Delicate balance for Man Utd in Amorim pursuitpublished at 10:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

    Sporting v Estrela (20:15 GMT)

BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

It is possible Manchester United could confirm Ruben Amorim as Erik ten Hag's successor at some point today.

It certainly seems that is what they want to do.

However, United are mindful Sporting have a match to play this evening and don't want to affect that so the later it gets, the less likely it is to happen until after the match, when Amorim has promised the 'soap opera' will end.

Sporting want Amorim until later in November. RVN goes on a run and gets a 100% record. Amorim comes in. Slow start. Fans sing RVN's name from the stands. Another debacle ensues. I wouldn't bet against it.

  3. Reds trio 'in a good place' despite contract talkspublished at 10:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Liverpool v Brighton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Finally, Arne Slot gave an update on the contract situations surrounding Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, who are all in the last year of their current deals: "The contract situation could become an issue if the players don't perform as they do at the moment, but they are so mature. At the moment all three of them are in a good place and there are ongoing discussions, like Virgil has said. They are not with me, we talk about other things.

"Let's wait and see but all that he says is completely right. He doesn't know exactly what the future holds if he doesn't sign the contract."

  4. 'I prefer to play with a real number nine but it is not a possibility if we have injuries'published at 09:56 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Liverpool v Brighton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot on facing the Seagulls for the second time this week: "In football we are used to playing the same team [again] after a few days. Both teams didn't start [on Wednesday] with the same team they will start with on Saturday. "I think with both managers it is a positive thing because you know a little bit more about the opponent.

"The way we filled in the number nine position was interesting because I thought it worked really well. In the end I prefer to play with a real number nine but it is not a possibility if we have injuries. It was good to score three goals without playing with an old-fashioned number nine."

On opposite number Fabian Hurzeler: "Some people need the 20 years of experience to get to this level. Some other talents have it. He is one of them. For him, experience is probably not such a big thing. Usually it is good to have some experience but there are exceptions to the rule."

  5. Robertson 'getting into that rhythm of playing twice a week'published at 09:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Liverpool v Brighton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot on rotating between Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas at left-back: "I wouldn't it's say a dilemma. There are other positions where we have rotated.

"It probably also has to do with Robbo's pre-season. He had no pre-season because he came back injured from the Euros so he missed almost the whole pre-season. For most of them it was only two weeks but for him it was only a few days.

"Kostas did really well in that period of time so it has to do with the quality Kostas has in that position but it also has to do with Robbo missing pre-season. That's why we started rotating from the start a bit. That's the situation.

"It was good for Robbo to play against Arsenal and against Brighton in midweek. That is making sure he is getting into that rhythm of playing twice a week."

  6. 'Mac Allister capable as a 10 or a six'published at 09:46 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Liverpool v Brighton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot on Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who could face his former side on Saturday: "He's a player I would play in all three positions in the midfield because he is so comfortable in all three.

"I saw a lot of him at Brighton because there was a manager I was quite interested in back then [Roberto de Zerbi].

"He is now at the moment the midfielder who plays a bit in between. Ryan [Gravenberch] is almost always the deepest. Dom [Szoboszlai] or Curtis [Jones] are playing a bit higher and then Alexis is in between.

"It depends on how dominant we are whether he is the second 10 or the second six. He is comfortable in both phases of the game. He can help us bring the ball out from the back and he is also capable of making the difference in and around the 18-yard box. We want to see him in both situations as much as we can."

  7. Alisson, Jota & Chiesa won't return before international breakpublished at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Liverpool v Brighton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot began his news conference by confirming that Alisson, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa will not be available for selection before the international break.

He added it is "difficult to put an exact time frame" on their return.

Get Involved - 'Why don't Man Utd go for someone like Van Nistelrooy rather than Amorim?'published at 09:40 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Man U have learned nothing from the last several years. Managerial success elsewhere, abroad, at arguably an easier level, hasn't worked. I suspect Amorim might also struggle. I think they are taking a big risk. Why don't they try and get someone in who knows the club, knows the Premier League, and would immediately have the fan's backing. Someone like Ruud van Nistelrooy say. Oh wait.

And finally from Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal boss had this to say on Martin Odegaard's recovery: "Now is the stage he's going to start doing some work with us and see how he deals with pain.

"With the work rate and the amount of hours he has put in, I don't know when he will be ready. Hopefully soon."

  10. Nwaneri 'has to see he can fly and not cut his wings'published at 09:33 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Newcastle v Arsenal (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on Ethan Nwaneri after scoring in the EFL Cup win at Preston: "I can talk about how good he is right now. At 17, to be in the position he is in at one of the biggest clubs in Europe sums up where he is. He is surrounded by the right people. My prediction is going to be very positive.

"It's rare to see a talent like this at 17 years old, that's true. We didn't do it because it was a gift, we saw a path for him and wanted to show the trust in him.

"I think the biggest thing is to push him. Once you push, grab him from behind. When you see this talent, you have to push him. He has to see he can fly and not cut his wings.

"That shows in the building that there is a pathway and for other players to follow."

  11. 'I've tried to adapt my behaviours on touchline'published at 09:30 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

Newcastle v Arsenal (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on his behaviour on the touchline after being animated during last season's 0-0 draw at home to Newcastle: "On the touchline, I haven't got to the point I go into meditating mode. Maybe I should. When they change the rules about certain behaviours, we need to adapt and that's what I've tried to do.

On missing games: "I don't want to miss any games. I can't promise that if we score a goal, I won't jump up and down the touchline. So far, it has worked."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on Ben White adapting to playing at centre-back due to recent injuries: "That is Ben's quality, he can play two different positions. He can adapt. We are demanding. For him to do that job, having not played there for over a year, was very impressive."

On whether White's injury is a recurrence of his groin problem: "No, this is more related to a joint."

On Takehiro Tomiyasu: "No, I don't expect him to be available before the break, unfortunately."

  20. 'Many of the things being said about Amorim were being said about Ten Hag'published at 08:53 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

The fact is Ruben Amorim is known to all Premier League clubs. He is one of the rising stars in European football when it comes to coaching.

He spoke to West Ham about their managerial vacancy in light of David Moyes leaving last season. He was also on Liverpool's radar to replace Jurgen Klopp. He has been linked with many, many jobs. When he decided to stay at Sporting at the start of this season it was felt he would commit for another season and come into contention for the job at Manchester City if Pep Guardiola leaves.

He might not be well known by fans but he is very well known in European football circles. Manchester United have gone down that route. The only caveat is many of the things that are being said about Amorim now were being said about Erik ten Hag when he came in two-and-a-bit years ago from Ajax.

Manchester United have been the graveyard for many managers so we will see what happens with Ruben Amorim.
