Summary

  1. 'The highlight of tonight'published at 21:34 British Summer Time

    Birmingham 1-1 Sheff Utd

    Andy Giddings
    BBC Radio Sheffield commentator

What ever happens here tonight, Gus Hamer's goal is the highlight of tonight.

From nothing they are level. United need to take some confidence from this now.

Can Sheffield United go on and win it from here?

  2. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 21:33 British Summer Time

    Huddersfield 2-2 Leicester

Boos ring around the home stands as another penalty appeal is waved away by David Webb, Jay Smith-Sway going to ground under pressure from the backtracking Kasey McAteer.

Might have been harsh, but they really should still have one in the wood from the first half, if we're honest.

Penalties are looming large, no extra-time tonight.

  3. goal

GOAL Birmingham 1-1 Sheff Utdpublished at 21:31 British Summer Time

    Gustavo Hamer (72 mins)

Birmingham City goalkeeper James Beadle concedes their side's first goal of the game to Sheffield United's Gustavo Hamer (not pictured)Image source, PA Media

    Wow - just wow!

On the halfway line Gustavo Hamer spots James Beadle off his line and drifts a wonder strike over the backpedalling debutant.

It's Sheffield United's first effort on target!

Out of nowhere we are level.

  4. 'Wednesday on front foot'published at 21:29 British Summer Time

    Bolton 2-3 Sheff Wed

    Ross Wallace
Ex-Sheffield Wednesday winger on BBC Radio Sheffield

The character of these players is brilliant!

They have been pegged back twice and they have gone back ahead again.

They have been on the front foot all match and it shows the character of these young lads to keep going.

  5. Postpublished at 21:29 British Summer Time

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

Dovydas Sasnauskas has had a difficult evening but he does well to get in the way of a Willum Willumsson blockbuster to deflect it behind for a corner.

Christoph Klarer nods the set piece back into the six-yard area and the visitors scramble it away.

Somehow Sheffield United are still alive in this tie.

  6. goal

GOAL:Bolton 2-3 Sheff Wedpublished at 21:27 British Summer Time

    Reece Johnson (80 mins)

    Bonkers game, this.

As in the first half the visitors have restored their lead within minutes of Bolton equalising, this time it's teenage debutant Reece Johnson who catches the trotters defence napping, bursting into the left of the area and slotting coolly under the onrushing Tyler Miller from an angle.

Neat finish and those travelling fans love it. They really want to play Leeds in round two, it appears.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 21:27 British Summer Time

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

Ethan Laird takes a breather for Bright Osay-Samuel for Birmimgham.

Tommy Doyle also gets the hook and Paik Seung-Ho is on.

  8. Postpublished at 21:27 British Summer Time

    Bolton 2-2 Sheff Wed

It really should be 3-2 to the Owls.

Charlie McNeill is in acres of space as a low cross from the left is whipped across goal, it looks like he's expecting it to be cut out so when the ball breaks to him he can only drag wide of the near post tamely.

  9. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 21:26 British Summer Time

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

Birmingham have the ball in the net from a corner but it's disallowed.

Referee Gavin Ward has already blown his whistle to call time on a wrestling match at the near post before the kick is taken.

  10. goal

GOAL: Bolton 2-2 Sheff Wedpublished at 21:24 British Summer Time

    Thierry Gale (77 mins)

Bolton have been probing for a leveller and they have one.

Amario COzier-Duberry had an effort cleared off the line by Ernie Weaver moments earlier but this time a ball into the Owls box causes havoc before Thierry Gale picks his spot inside Pierce Charles' left-hand post to bring the 10-men level.

  11. Postpublished at 21:23 British Summer Time

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

Not quite so many chances created by Birmingham in this second period.

But just as I type that there's a defensive slip by Tyler Bindon but Tommy Doyle's effort is saved.

Birmingham have had 15 shots to Sheffield United's three so far...

  12. 'Both teams going for it'published at 21:23 British Summer Time

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

    Ian Clarkson
Ex-Birmingham captain on BBC Radio WM

We have got 30 minutes to go and and Blues need to keep doing what they are doing, which is pressing high up the pitch.

There are a couple of warning signs here for Blues and Sydie Peck is looking very threatening.

Both teams are really going for it now.

  13. goal

GOAL: Huddersfield 2-2 Leicesterpublished at 21:20 British Summer Time

    Cameron Ashia (76 mins)

Huddersfield Town's Cameron Ashia celebratesImage source, PA Media

    What a goal. Again.

Cameron Ashia drives in from the left, given the freedom of HD1 and opts to have a pop, curling a powerful strike across goal from an angle and into Jakub Stolarczyk's far top corner.

The fans have been treated to some special strikes tonight...

Ashia is only 18. The EFL Cup first round is a stage for future stars to shine, clearly.

  14. Postpublished at 21:19 British Summer Time

    Huddersfield 1-2 Leicester

Foxes sub Louis Page, only 17, bundles his way forward, spins on a sixpence on the edge of the Town area but is just off balance as he blazes an effort well over the angle of post and bar.

The present might be a touch murky, but the future of Leicester City looks incredibly bright. Some academy they have there.

  15. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 21:16 British Summer Time

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

Ruben Selles has seen enough - he's already made a change at the break and now on come three more substitutes.

After his shenanigans with the referee a few moments ago, Jack Robinson is off and on comes Tyler Bindon.

Djibril Soumare is replaced by Gustavo Hamer and Tyrese Campbell is on for Ryan One.

Birmingham withdraw the goalscorer Kyogo Furuhashi and it's Jay Stansfield who gets a run - not a bad change!

  16. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 21:15 British Summer Time

    Huddersfield 1-2 Leicester

Huddersfield have quite a squad this season.

Joe Taylor and Alfie May are off the bench to hunt an equaliser, with Ruben Roosken and Dion Charles the ones to make way.

  17. Postpublished at 21:14 British Summer Time

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

Sheffield United skipper Jack Robinson was cautioned in the first period.

Referee Gavin Ward wants him to take a throw-in from the right place and Robinson gives him a sarcastic thumbs-up.

The official tells him to calm down - a more stringent referee might have brandished a second card.

  18. goal

GOAL: Huddersfield 1-2 Leicesterpublished at 21:12 British Summer Time

    Harry Winks (68 mins)

Lovely finish, and parity didn't last long.

It's the two new arrivals who combine for City with Stephy Mavididi running down the left, throwing in a couple of stepovers, and then sliding across for Harry Winks who opens up his body nicely and passes the ball across goal and inside Lee Nicholls' far post with the aplomb of a former England international.

Foxes are 20-odd minutes from a trip to Sunderland in round two.

  19. Postpublished at 21:11 British Summer Time

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

Ethan Laird sprints away down the right.

He gets a cross in but can't pick out a blue shirt.

Kyogo Furuhashi then blasts an effort over.

    Different half, same pattern.

  20. goal

GOAL: Huddersfield 1-1 Leicesterpublished at 21:10 British Summer Time

    Daniel Vost (65 mins)

Dan Vost of Huddersfield Town scores the equalising goal 1-1 from the rebound after a penaltyImage source, Rex Features

Dion Charles' low spot-kick is saved to his left by Jakub Stolarczyk but 19-year-old Daniel Vost is following in intently and rises highest to head the rebound into the roof of the net past the despairing dive of the City keeper.

    Game on.
