Summary

  1. Postpublished at 20:18 British Summer Time 13 August

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

Just looking back at that first goal for Kyogo Furuhashi in Birmingham blue, it might be a weak backpass from Dovydas Sasnauskas but goalkeeper Adam Davies may also have to take some of the responsibility.

He hesitates rather than coming towards the ball and it allows Demarai Gray to take the ball away from him.

Either way it's more ridiculous defending from the Blades.

  2. Postpublished at 20:18 British Summer Time 13 August

    Huddersfield 0-0 Leicester

Some slick approach play from the Foxes with Will Alves sending Kasey McAteer blazing down the right and into the box where his low cross-shot flicks off a defender's heel and somehow evades the lurking Jeremy Monga at the far post.

  3. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 20:15 British Summer Time 13 August

    Bolton 0-1 Sheff Wed

George Johnston has come on to play at the back for Bolton, with Daeshon Lawrence the unfortunate man sacrificed for the reshuffle.

  4. 'All a bit scrappy'published at 20:15 British Summer Time 13 August

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

    Andy Giddings
    BBC Radio Sheffield commentator

It is all a bit scrappy now. We had Blues in control in the opening stages and were gifted the lead.

But now possession is all a bit we have it, no you have it - it is all over the place.

    Upset on the cards?

James Wilson reacts quickly as a Jacob Mazionis corner drops at his feet inside the six-yard box.

    The League Two side lead.

  6. RED CARD - Sam Inwood (Bolton)published at 20:13 British Summer Time 13 August

    Bolton 0-1 Sheff Wed

Lightning break from Wednesday and Ike Ugbo sends Charlie McNeill racing clear.

Defender Sam Inwood slides in desperately on the edge of the box but gets none of the ball and Oliver Langford takes about two seconds to brandish the red card.

McNeill sends the subsequent free-kick straight into the wall, however.

Bolton have been on top, popping it about nicely, but they are now a goal down, and a man down.

  7. 'The perfect start'published at 20:10 British Summer Time 13 August

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

    Ian Clarkson
Ex-Birmingham captain on BBC Radio WM

You have to give Demarai Gray some credit there!

He managed to just touch it with his weaker foot round the keeper. He would of known once it is past the keeper it is surely a goal to tap in in for Kyogo Furuhasi.

It is the perfect start for Blues.

  8. Postpublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 13 August

    Birmingham 1-0 Sheff Utd

Almost an instant response from the visitors.

Ehije Ukaki tries one from distance and it dips just over.

  9. Postpublished at 20:09 British Summer Time 13 August

    Bolton 0-1 Sheff Wed

Bolton's Aaron Morley gets a wallop after a high-speed collision with Bruno Fernandes.

No, don't worry Man Utd fans, not that one.

Wednesday's 19-year-old debutant midfielder, who is also Portuguese, perhaps unsurprisingly.

  10. goal

    Kyogo Furuhashi (5 mins)

That didn't take long - awful from the visitors.

Dovydas Sasnauskas makes a horrible mess of a back pass - it's too short and Demarai Gray nips in to square the ball to Kyogo Furuhashi who slots into an empty net.

A fifth goal conceded this season by the Blades.

  11. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 13 August

    Huddersfield 0-0 Leicester

Another penalty shout as David Kasumu runs at the back-tracking Ben Nelson in the area, he cuts inside and seems to slip amid a tangle of legs, but once again David Webb says no penalty.

This looked a worse shout than the earlier one, in fairness.

Nelson is going to get a lot of people running at him tonight though, you'd expect.

  12. Postpublished at 20:04 British Summer Time 13 August

    Birmingham 0-0 Sheff Utd

The home side almost ahead from their first corner.

It's sent in low to the near post but Kyogo Furuhashi fails to get a proper connection on his header and the danger is cleared.

The striker was on his own there - should have done better.

  13. 'Wednesday showing great composure'published at 20:03 British Summer Time 13 August

    Bolton 0-1 Sheff Wed

    Adam Oxley
    BBC Radio Sheffield

Sheffield Wednesday are leading here and it is giving similar vibes to last night that the team that weren't expected to win just like Doncaster are putting up a fight.

I'm not saying Wednesday will win 4-0, but it is certainly good to see and they are showing great composure so far.

  14. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:03 British Summer Time 13 August

    Huddersfield 0-0 Leicester

Jeremy Monga comes with a big reputation, but this is not a reputation he'll want.

The 16-year-old has looked very bright, and not just because he is wearing Leicester's baby pink away strip, but this time he drives into the area with stepovers flying left and right before throwing himself to ground as he drifts past Lynden Gooch.

There was no contact and ref Oliver Langford whips out the yellow card for simulation.

  15. goal

    Jon Russell (15 mins)

The Tykes get their noses in front.

Reyes Cleary sends over the cross and there's Jon Russell at the back stick to do the rest with his head.

  16. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:01 British Summer Time 13 August

Birmingham City manager Chris DaviesImage source, PA Media

We are under way in the 20:00 (BST) kick-off in the Midlands.

Birmingham boss Chris Davies makes six changes from the side which started Friday's 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town.

The changes include a debut for on-loan goalkeeper James Beadle.

Sheffield United swap out 10 players from the 4-1 hammering at home to Bristol City on Saturday.

Callum O'Hare is the only player retained from that opening day defeat.

Both sides have gone strong on the bench, just in case...

  17. Postpublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 13 August

    Bolton 0-1 Sheff Wed

Ethan Erhahon intercepts a pass and tries his luck from range, trying to get the Trotters back into it, but Owls keeper Pierce Charles gathers at the second attempt.

  18. Blues and Blades on different trajectoriespublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 13 August

Birmingham City players celebrating winning the EFL Cup in 2011Image source, Rex Features

These two will become familiar with each other over the course of the next nine months with two league fixtures to come as well as tonight's EFL Cup first round tie.

They come into this evening's game with very different outlooks.

All is bright and beautiful in the Birmingham garden - a record-breaking promotion, redevelopment plans for their stadium, ambitious owners and a promising return to the Championship stage last Friday.

Things aren't quite so well ordered in the Blades' backyard - an agonising play-off final defeat last season, a parting of the ways with a popular boss and a 4-1 hammering to open the campaign under the new head coach.

Two-time winners of this cup, Blues also have a 100% record against Sheffield United in this competition with two wins from two meetings.

Given their illustrious history, two semi-final appearances (both lost 3-2 on aggregate) is a pretty poor return for the Blades in this competition and they haven't been past the third round for a decade.

  19. goal

GOAL: Bolton 0-1 Sheff Wedpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 13 August

    Gui Siqeira (8 mins)

Absolute screamer from the young Brazilian Gui Seqeira.

The 20-year-old, on just his fourth appearance, pounces on a loose ball after the Owls pinch it back in the Bolton half and unleashes a rocket from an angle which flies past keeper Tyler Miller and into the far top corner.

If he plays another 20 years he might not hit one better...

Wednesday led against all expectations on Sunday but ultimately suffered heartbreak, can they avoid the same fate today?

  20. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 19:53 British Summer Time 13 August

    Huddersfield 0-0 Leicester

Leicester defender Ben Nelson has a sheepish look on his face after dangling a leg in the box leading to howls for a penalty from the home faithful, but referee David Webb says nothing doing.

    Lucky boy.
