Liverpool have completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for 35m euros (£29.5m) on a five-year deal.

Just hours after the Anfield club confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold would be joining Real Madrid in time to play in the Club World Cup, the Premier League champions have ratified their move for Dutch international Frimpong after activating the 24-year-old's release clause.

Versatile right-footer Frimpong is widely viewed as Alexander-Arnold's replacement in Arne Slot's squad.

He played an integral role in helping Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in 2023-24 and made 53 appearances in all competitions as they finished second in 24-25.

Frimpong will have competition at right-back from Northern Ireland defender Conor Bradley, who recently signed a new four-year contract with the club.

Manchester United have agreed a deal with Wolves for the signing of Brazil forward Matheus Cunha.

The 26-year-old is set to become United's first signing of the summer after the club activated a £62.5m release clause in Cunha's Wolves contract.

The former Atletico Madrid player will sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford, with the option of a further 12 months.

Cunha was in Manchester over the weekend to complete a medical with the club.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure from boyhood club Liverpool was confirmed in May after the right-back decided he wanted a change of scenery with Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold was due to be out of contract at the end of June but Real Madrid have paid a fee - sources indicate it was around 10m euros (£8.4m) - to secure an early release.

He officially became a Real Madrid player on Sunday and is now eligible to feature at the Club World Cup.

The 26-year-old has signed a six-year deal at the Bernabeu and his contract includes a 1bn euro (£840m) buy-out clause.

Already worried by the lack of Newcastle transfer news. Eddie Howe said it was important to move quickly, but it seems nothing is moving. Mateta would be perfect for the Toon. Howay man, get it done.

  6. Liverpool's spending historypublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 3 June

I need to defend the original post, Gary!

Liverpool paid an initial fee of £64m to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica in June 2022. The deal also included the potential for that fee to rise to £85m with add-ons if Nunez hit certain targets - he has struggled to deliver at the level Liverpool had hoped so those add-ons have not all been met.

The biggest outright fee Liverpool have parted with for a player is £75m to sign Virgil van Dijk in December 2017.

Roma said they could earn up to £66.8m for the sale of Alisson to Liverpool, while the Reds paid £60.1m for Dominik Szoboszlai in July 2023.

Those are the only four deals Liverpool have completed "costing north of £50m."

Naby Keita is next on the list at £48m, which was a club record fee in August 2017.

Re: 08:49 Nunez was £85m, that’s Liverpool’s record signing. Classic BBC, always trying to downplay Liverpool’s massive transfer outlay so their fans can continue to insist they don’t spend any money despite most players in their squad costing north of £50m.

Is it me or were we being told only a week ago that United would have to sell to buy, everyone was up for sale, etc? Now they're buying Cunha, Mbuemo is on his way and they can afford to keep Fernandes without anyone leaving?

  10. 'Man Utd financial crisis overplayed by Ratcliffe'published at 09:56 British Summer Time 3 June

Manchester United head coach Ruben AmorimImage source, Getty Images

According to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, the picture painted of a financial crisis at Manchester United seems to have been overplayed by part owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

United had the highest EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) profit of any Premier League club, as well as the second highest revenues in 2023-24.

Given this cash profit is generated by the day-to-day operations of the club, it only underlines United's appeal at the turnstile to sponsors and broadcasters - despite their poor performance on the pitch.

Despite missing out on Champions League football, Wolves forward Matheus Cunha was signed for £62.5m.

Ipswich forward Liam Delap was in United's sights, at a price of £30m, but has chosen Chelsea, and further spending power looks to hinge on the futures of a host of players they are looking to offload.

The club will hope the likes of Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony can depart permanently this summer, but when and for how much will be a key consideration.

While Manchester United continue their pursuit of big-money targets in the transfer window, it was reported last month that the club have started a second round of redundancies which could affect around 200 jobs.

About 250 members of staff were made redundant last year in a first wave of cost-cutting measures by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe while the season ticket prices will also rise by about 5% for the third successive year.

Those are among a string of measures announced by the club since the Ineos group completed a deal worth about $1.6bn (£1.25bn) for a stake in the club in February 2024.

In March, Ratcliffe had said that "United would have run out of cash by the end of 2025" in an interview with BBC Sport.

United's latest accounts showed a net loss of £113.2m in the year to 30 June 2024, with total losses across the past five years exceeding £370m.

So how can United afford to splash the cash in the market?

  12. Mateta to Man Utd?published at 09:44 British Summer Time 3 June

    Jean-Philippe MatetaImage source, Getty Images

There has been chatter about Jean-Philippe Mateta and a potential move to Manchester United for some time now. Earlier this year it was reported that the Crystal Palace striker was on their radar.

Yesterday BBC Sport's Simon Stone said: "Liam Delap turned United down, so Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford, Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta and others come into the equation."

Teamtalk reports, external that Mateta is on Manchester United's striker shortlist and the club are "expected to make a concrete move in the coming days to explore the conditions of a potential deal."

They also report interest in Mateta from Serie A too - at Juventus and AC Milan.

Moving to Man Utd makes sense for individuals regardless of European competition because of their reach, it opens up a lot of sponsorship opportunities (for boots, for example). United would have to be out of Europe for years for that to have any impact on the club’s global fame. Brentford and Wolves just can’t match it - they are niche by comparison.

    Position: Forward

    Nationality: Cameroon

    Age: 25

Transfer status: Reportedly wants to join Manchester United, who are set to open talks for the forward with Brentford.

Why do Man Utd want him?: Goals have been a big problem at Old Trafford. The four teams to score fewer than Man Utd in the Premier League last season were Everton and the three relegated sides.

Mbeumo has had 59 goal involvements in the past three top-flight campaigns, which Ruben Amorim will hope can help solve the issue. His versatility is also a bonus as he can lead the line or play from his more preferred wide role. Bags of pace, creativity in abundance and a fearsome left foot - what's not to admire?

How was his 2024-25 campaign?: The French-born Cameroon forward bagged 20 Premier League goals last season, with only Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland scoring more. Mbeumo also made seven assists.

He had 177 touches in the opposition box from 38 top-flight appearances, with a 52% take-on success rate.

  15. Man Utd expected to hold Mbeumo talkspublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 3 June

Manchester United are expected to open talks with Brentford over striker Bryan Mbeumo.

United head coach Ruben Amorim is prioritising signing additional striking firepower this summer to bolster his mis-firing attack.

Wolves’ Matheus Cunha has already agreed a deal with United and will complete his move to Old Trafford once his international commitments with Brazil are over.

And United feel confident in moving forward on Mbeumo after receiving indications they are his first choice for a move this summer.

It is understood there is no release clause in Mbeumo’s contract, which still has a year left to run, although there is the option to extend it by another year.

Like many leading players, including United goalkeeper Andre Onana, Mbeumo has been left out of the squad for Cameroon’s forthcoming friendlies against Uganda and Equatorial Guinea.

While Mbeumo is not a natural number nine, Amorim wants flexible players and the 25-year-old, signed from French club Troyes in 2019, is viewed as being versatile, dynamic, powerful and fast.

It is understood any deal will not be affected by growing reports suggesting Bruno Fernandes has turned down a huge offer from Saudi Pro-League club Al Hilal.

Whether Man Utd sign Mbeumo or not, it still shows the pull of one of the biggest clubs in the world with a rich history - regardless of their current plight. The potential is there and only someone shortsighted couldn't see that the right signings will have a huge benefit for the club and performances.

Bryan Mbeumo is likely to be a big part of our live text page today after news broke last night that wants to join Manchester United.

David Ornstein of the Athletic reported, external that the Cameroon international, who scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season, prefers the Red Devils over any other interested parties, including Tottenham.

The report states that Manchester United are expected to open talks with Brentford over a deal for the 25-year-old.

As our reporter Simon Stone wrote earlier, it does raise the question over how United will fund this deal after already parting with £62.5m to activate Matheus Cunha's release clause.

This is starting to feel like a typically annoying transfer window from Arsenal already. We are seeing our rivals: Liverpool, Chelsea and Utd all making signing and we aren’t. The only player we look like we are signing is Zubimendi who is a CDM and most fans would rather give Partey a contract extension than spend £51million on a player who is worse defensively.
