Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, speaking to TNT Sports: "Intense, it was always going to be intense. A lot of battles. Very disappointing to concede in the last second of the game, or even over extra time, but it is what it is. It isn't easy to accept it, especially in the manner how, but we take it and move on.

"I think the referee had a big part in the game today in terms of certain challenges were given as fouls and similar weren't. In the end it is just disappointing to concede a very good strike, but a disappointing one.

"This is their cup final and they would try to do everything in their power to make it difficult for us. It is a big boost for them but a blow for us."

On the title race: "We have a lot of games up until the international break. We have put ourselves in a very good position and that is down to hard work, quality and consistency. We just have to look at ourselves, don't look at what others do, just try to focus on ourselves and be the best version of ourselves.

"We have put ourselves in a good position, let's keep going."

That's a proper derby game today, rolling back the years.

On a whole, it was played in a great way, very passionate, fight in the game. I know it spilled over towards the end but I thought the game was very competitive, tackles flying in. A proper derby.

What an end and what a finish, it was fitting for the last derby at Goodison.

I think Everton came off that field feeling like they won the game.

The finish from James Tarkowski right at the death was phenomenal. It was finish like a striker.

Everton fans just need to remain patient.

David Moyes has been back for five games now and he has been great. He has done a wonderful job.

They look as if they are going to stay up now if they continue in the vein they are in.

They have new owners and a beautiful new stadium. But they need finances so they can attract the right people and players to the club so that they can become a team that can compete again.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, speaking to TNT Sports: "It was a great point.

"There was anxiety at the end with the VAR, but it was massive for the fans and for us. To finish at Goodison with a point, we thought we played very well tonight and an important point for in the table as well.

"It was a fantastic strike [by James Tarkowski]. We didn't give up, we kept pushing and pushing. There were some great performances out there.

"That edge in a derby is always crucial. We deserved a point.

"We knew it would hang over the fans heads and our heads if Liverpool won 2-1 tonight. We have to take the positives from it and we know we have to go to Anfield in a few weeks."

Timed at 97:08, James Tarkowski’s equaliser for Everton was the latest goal scored on record (from 2006-07) in a Premier League Merseyside derby.

It was also Liverpool's second-latest conceded on record against any side in the competition, after Robin van Persie’s goal for Arsenal in April 2011 (97:10).

David Moyes understands this club and he would have been as gutted as anyone if it had stayed 2-1. As it was it was a good point.

He is not just saying all the right things. He knows what the right things are.

Over 700 games in the Premier League, he knows exactly what to do and at the moment things are working pretty well.

More from Moyes to TNT Sports, on his style at Everton: "We're trying to improve what we can. We're trying to make things better. Tonight was a night where we had to suit the stadium, a lot of things in the game. We went more direct tonight but it suited us.

"We got it in the end and the point in the end more importantly is a point towards making sure we're a Premier League club."

On whether the point removes fears of relegation: "I wish it did. I think that us picking up the points regularly is what we've got to try and do between now and the end of the season. I think there's a group here who lack some quality in areas but we've got to try and fill in, we've got a few injuries but hopefully there are signs of one or two coming back."

On Everton scoring more often recently: "This has never been an easy ground for anybody to come and play. Maybe there's been a bit where the crowd and the players haven't been quite matched up, partly because of the hard times they've had. I think now there's beginning to get better with the players and supporters again, the crowd tonight was magnificent - it really was."

On Illiman Ndiaye's injury and Abdoulaye Doucoure's sending off: "They're going to check, they think he's maybe opened his knee but we're not sure yet. That was the feeling at the time that he's done something to his knee.

"I'm disappointed with Doucoure because we need him, we're down on numbers at the moment. We've got to be careful what we do. Discipline is never easy sometimes in these games and tonight was a game where quite easily sending offs happen."

Everton

Everton manager David Moyes, speaking to TNT Sports: "Mental probably sums it up. A brilliant finish for us, to finish the last Goodison Merseyside derby and score in the last minute is in a way fitting.

"We would have liked to have won the game but at 2-1 down I was just thinking that we probably weren't going to get back in, it just looked like Liverpool would keep us out.

"We worked hard, kept at it, probably had more attempts in the second half than the first. Tarky had the quality which was the one that really mattered."

On Tarkowski scoring on his 100th Premier League appearance for Everton: "I think after his game last weekend he'll be pleased he got the goal. He scored a great goal tonight and it will be remembered in history."

On how tonight's game compares to others he's managed: "It was right up there and it was great at the end. I think the night was maybe made for something to happen. It wasn't the greatest, it wasn't the cleanest game of football you've ever watched but it was a bit of a throwback, a bit scrappy for both sides. We had to find a way of making the gap not so big tonight and did a good job of it."

On what's changed since he took over as Everton manager: "The fact is I think the players have responded really well in what they've done. We've made more chances. Beto's come in and scored the goal, he's scored for us earlier on as well. That's really helped us, we've suddenly creating a few more chances than we had. All praise to the players."

Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, speaking to MOTD: "Very tough. To concede an equaliser that late is always disappointing. We saw the celebrations they had in the end so we know how much it meant for them but the fact is it was disappointing for us. We take the point and move onto Wolves now.

"We came back, got to 2-1 but unfortunately we couldn't get it over the line. We had to keep fighting, we kept doing that but in the end it wasn't enough to get it over the line."

On the clash of players at the end: "It was a very big provocation from one certain player. We all saw it and reacted as a team as we were able to do. You know what happens nowadays, it becomes one big tussle. Then it is not me who has to deal with it, it is the referee and today I am not sure he had it fully under control."

On the title fight: "We have put ourselves in a solid position. We all know we have so many difficult games coming up. We need everyone at their best.

"Everyone should be disappointed on the last part of this game but from tomorrow the focus will be on recovery.

"The main thing for us is to completely focus on ourselves, and as fans as well, don't look at what others are doing and writing, just focus on us.

"Every game will be tough until the end of the season, then we will see at the end of the road if it is enough. But we have put ourselves in a good position and we have to keep fighting."

Still very difficult to see Liverpool not winning the title from here.

Seven points clear of a team who might not have a striker for the rest of the season.

I think for the fans a loss would have been tough to take tonight. A draw moves them forward with another point.

The place is bouncing now and Everton will want to be playing as many home games as possible at the moment so they can harness this energy.

If Liverpool would have won 2-1, it would have been a brilliant result.

You can see why Arne Slot was furious. There was a slight little nudge in the box and if that was my team I would be appealing. I would be getting sent off after the game too.

Slot always talks about staying composed but it seems like he lost a bit of his composure at the end there. That's what a derby does to you.

It is apt really that the last game at Goodison Park is a game like this. Like an old school 80s game.

There was not a load of quality in the game but it was wild, it had passion, it had fight.

There were a number of sending offs at the end, people wanted to antagonise each other and fight each other. It was fitting it ended in absolute chaos.

For the blue half of the city it was a perfect ending.

I think it was what Everton deserved tonight. They did what they needed to do and a point is a great result.

Everton goalscorer James Tarkowski, speaking to TNT Sports: "Early on I got a chance and I panicked a bit. Late on I just decided to get in the box, it dropped, I just let it go and see what happens. Amazing to score and what an amazing night.

"I just saw the ball going wide and thought 'last minute, why not'. It managed to fall to me and let it rip."

On what the wait for the VAR check felt like: "I don't score many so I thought it would have been typical if it was disallowed. I had a tough weekend so it's nice to get one back."

On what it means for the fans: "Listen to [the noise from the stands], that's amazing. These will remember it. I'm just proud of my team, stuck at it, they [Liverpool] didn't create much, and we got the goal at the end."

On what he made of Everton's performance: "We knew it was a tough game but we worked hard, restricted them to a minimum amount of shots. Disappointed with the way the goals go in but we've started to score a few goals now, thankfully we got two tonight."
