Arne Slot seemed extremely relaxed this morning, dismissing talk of nerves ahead of his first Premier League game at Anfield, dropping a casual swear word in a very Dutch fashion, before claiming one of the reporters had been longer in football than him “because of how he looked” – which the rest of us found very amusing!

The new Liverpool manager alleviated any concerns in relation to Joe Gomez as well. Linked with a move away after not being involved against Ipswich, I asked if his head was in the right place and was told it had been for three weeks.

Apparently his omission was down to “load” and not playing much at the Euros. Slot made a point of saying he’s “seeing new things" from the 27-year-old and when pressed on a possible transfer reiterated that he expects everyone to be here.

  2. Howe 'surprised' by reports of Trippier exitpublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 23 August

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe says he has been "surprised" by reports that Kieran Trippier wants to leave the club.

The 33-year-old England international was an unused substitute in the Magpies' 1-0 win against Southampton on Saturday.

Howe said Trippier "continues to be really valued" by the club.

"The situation is business as usual, Tripps has trained really well this week. I'm surprised by a lot of the stories that have come out," Howe said in a news conference on Friday.

"[He's] a valuable member of the squad. His professionalism has been first class."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he will open talks about a new contract with the club once the transfer window has closed.

Arteta's current contract expires at the end of this season but talks are not expected to be a problem and the 42-year-old has a good relationship with the club's hierarchy.

"The focus has been on the transfer window," Arteta said.

"We had quite a lot of things to do and discuss. We are on it and we will take care of that in the right moment."

  6. 'You realise what you had' - Gundogan returns to Man Citypublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 23 August

    Manchester City

Ilkay Gundogan on how he feels to be re-joining Manchester City: “I’m incredibly happy, happy to see my team-mates, the staff, people that I had seven years with and an amazing time with. Many ups and a few downs but an incredible experience. When you leave this place, you spend a year away and you then start to appreciate the place even more.

"You realise what you had, how amazing the time was and how big the club is. The best club in the world and I think in terms of football – getting back onto that level and coming back a year later is an incredible feeling. I am very pleased, very happy and I feel privileged to share the dressing room again with these amazing players.”

Liz: Football runs on pure emotion, when it's at its best. And when a player leaves too soon, that can be the exception to 'never go back'. We missed him badly in midfield last season. Blues love him, you won't find a single one who isn't thrilled.

    Manchester City

Ilkay Gundogan on his message to the City fans: “I am very thankful and grateful. I feel privileged to be back. I had an incredible time here. I hope my time from right now will be even better. I promise, I will do my best to be even better than I was. It feels so nice to be home and I’m really thankful for the welcome.

"I’m not the type of guy who looks so much into social media but when something like that is close and people start to talk about it... The reality is that, I left last year so there could be people that say ‘he left and we don’t want him back’, but I read a little bit and 99.9% was amazing and positive. People were wishing for me to come back and the messages that I got from the people in Manchester were also positive. It showed me that this decision is just so right, and it feels so right. I am just happy to be here right now.”

I am over the moon that Gundogan has returned! He's got so much quality on and off the ball - he's just perfect. I know he won't get as many minutes as he did before but he's a fabulous impact sub to change the game and dictate the play. Perfect.

  14. 'A little bit of thinking' behind Gundogan's shirt numberpublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 23 August

    Manchester City

Ilkay Gundogan on taking the number 19 shirt: “There was a little bit of thinking behind it. Number 21 and 22 were free as well – I was 22 last year at Barcelona and 21 in the German national team but I didn’t win any trophies with these numbers, so I thought number 19 is between 18 and 20 – my two friends Bernardo Silva and Stefan Ortega so that might be a sign. I just went for it – let's see. It’s hopefully not the number that will have a big influence, it’s hopefully the way I am playing and behaving and the way we will be as a team. I can assure you we will try our best to win more.”
