Enzo Maresca says Mykhailo Mudryk's moments in the attacking third are "like flipping a coin" and the Chelsea boss wants to help his winger realise his potential at Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old played the full 90 minutes of the 2-0 win over Servette on Thursday but missed a huge chance just after half-time and struggled to make an impact.

When asked about the Ukrainian, who was signed from under the noses of Arsenal in a deal which could rise to £88m in add-ons, Maresca said: "This is Mudryk, not only in terms of tonight but also in terms of since he joined the club.

"He had some good moments and then some moments like flipping a coin. You don't know if it's one thing or the other thing.

"We are going to try to help him change. He needs to try to understand that we are going to give him the ball in the last third. And when he's there, [it's about] taking the right decision. For me, most of the mistakes from Misha are not about the quality or the technical mistake - it's about the choice.

"Sometimes he tries to do something different and we lose the ball. Sometimes he has to go one-v-one. It's about decision making. Hopefully we can help him improve that.

"If he can become more consistent, he can take one step forward."

Chelsea's oversized squad has been the subject of criticism and led to them being accused of "recruiting badly" by pundits.

There are 42 first-team players listed on the club website but many have not been seen in training, with manager Enzo Maresca fielding questions about their futures throughout his two-month spell at Stamford Bridge.

He left Raheem Sterling, arguably the club's most famous player, out of his first Premier League squad in the 2-0 home defeat by Manchester City on Sunday.

England midfielder Conor Gallagher has left for Atletico Madrid- in an unpopular move with some sections of the fanbase - with fellow home-grown star Armando Broja set to join Ipswich in a loan move with an obligation to buy.

A whole host of other players are facing uncertain futures including defenders Ben Chilwell, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah, and midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

Everton have spent about £40m on new signings this summer, while recouping in the region of £70m by selling Amadou Onana, Lewis Dobbin and Ben Godfrey.

Despite those sales, however, Dyche said the club may have to listen to offers for striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

"Any offer of a certain level would have to be looked at by the club," said Dyche.

"We are in a better position because of player trading and how much we have lowered the wages but it is not solved.

"Therefore there would still be a moment where the big people at the club get a phone call and then it is down to them."

Meanwhile, it is understood any further arrivals in the remainder of the transfer window would probably be on loan deals.

Everton manager Sean Dyche faces an early season selection crisis after saying he is down to "around 14 recognised first-team players" for the trip to Tottenham.

The Toffees travel to north London for Saturday's Premier League game (kick-off 15:00 BST) following a 3-0 opening home defeat by Brighton last weekend.

Injuries and suspension mean Dyche has no established right-back to call upon and the Blues have been linked with a move for Kieran Trippier, who wants to leave Newcastle.

“We are stretched unfortunately," said Dyche. "We are down to around 14 recognised first-team players at the minute - that is not perfect.

"The challenge is right in front of us, as always."

Everton are short at full-back as captain Seamus Coleman is dealing with a calf issue, Nathan Patterson is out for the long term and Ashley Young is suspended after being sent off against Brighton.

  11. Brentford sign Liverpool's Van den Bergpublished at 07:47 British Summer Time 23 August

Brentford have signed defender Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool in a deal worth up to £25m.

The 22-year-old joins the Thomas Frank's team on a five-year contract after turning down interest from a number of other clubs, including German champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Brentford will pay an initial £20m fee, with an additional £5m in add-ons, while Liverpool have a 17.5% sell-on clause.

"Sepp is a centre-back with a good level and he has the potential to develop even further," he added.

"He fits our culture and the way we want to play - he is quick, he reads the game well and is composed on the ball in the build-up and in the decisive defending actions.

Arsenal have agreed a deal in principle worth up to £32.6m to sign Spain midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad.

The fee for the 28-year-old, who has less than a year remaining on his contract at the La Liga side, is an initial £28.4m plus £4.2m in add-ons.

Merino was part of the Spain team that won Euro 2024 and featured in all seven matches in the tournament, scoring a late winner against Germany in the quarter-final.

The former Newcastle United player can operate as a deeper-lying midfielder and it is thought he would complement Declan Rice, who played a 'box-to-box' role at times last season.

  14. McInnes rages at 'horrendous' decisionpublished at 07:36 British Summer Time 23 August

    Derek McKinnesImage source, Getty Images

Derek McInnes did not hold back after Kilmarnock slipped to a 2-0 defeat at FC Copenhagen, blaming a "horrendous" refereeing decision as his side slipped to a late defeat.

The games was goalless heading into the final 15 minutes when David Watson was deemed - after a VAR intervention - to have fouled former Celtic winger Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Kevin Diks scored the penalty, before Rasmus Falk scored with the final kick of the game in stoppage time.

"By and large we felt okay until the referee gets involved," McInnes told BBC Sport Scotland. "For me, it's a horrendous decision.

"It's extremely harsh. I don't think it's a clear and obvious error. It surprised everybody when he was asked to go over.

"It's a coming together and I don't think it's a penalty kick. It floored us a wee bit. I know how gutted I felt on the touchline.

"For all the effort, work and organisation - to lose a goal to that is extremely harsh."

  15. Naismith bullish as Hearts' hopes dented by late losspublished at 07:32 British Summer Time 23 August

    Steven NaismithImage source, Getty Images

Hearts manager Steven Naismith says his side need to harness the power of Tynecastle to overcome a first-leg deficit against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.

Having recovered from a shaky start to get themselves seconds away from a creditable goalless draw in the Czech Republic, Daniel Oyegoke made the Scottish Premiership side's task harder by turning a late cross into his own net.

Plzen's Cadu swung in a dangerous ball which caught out the Hearts defender, as he helplessly watched the ball strike his thigh and fly into the corner of the net.

"We've got to use that home advantage next week," Naismith told BBC Scotland.

"There are lots of positives. We're disappointed because 0-0 gives you a slight advantage going into the second leg.

"But we know what Tynecastle can be like on a European night - we'll need that. And we need to make sure we create more chances like we did tonight."

Chelsea may have got their European campaign off to a winning start, but it was not all good news for British clubs on Thursday.

Hearts slipped to an agonisingly late defeat away at Czech side Viktoria Plzen, while Kilmarnock were beaten 2-0 at FC Copenhagen.

There was relief around Stamford Bridge at the full-time whistle as Chelsea were made to work hard for their win and survived some awkward moments.

Servette registered 22 attempts to the hosts' 14, with substitute Tiemoko Ouattara hitting the bar with a deflected effort in the 86th minute.

However, Chelsea eked out a victory to help put the disappointing opening defeat by Manchester City behind them and get Maresca's reign up and running.

"I was a bit worried because in the last 10 minutes we played a little bit with fire," said Maresca. "It was good that we didn't concede but we can learn."

Let's turn our attentions to Thursday's European action and we start at Stamford Bridge.

Christopher Nkunku's penalty helped Enzo Maresca earn his first win as Chelsea boss as the Blues secured a two-goal advantage against Servette in their Conference League play-off first leg.

A much-changed Chelsea side had been struggling to open up their Swiss opponents until Nkunku was sent sprawling by goalkeeper Jeremy Frick early in the second half.

The France forward, one of just two survivors from the Blues team that started the 2-0 home defeat by Manchester City on Sunday, picked himself up to score the first goal of the Maresca era from the spot.

Noni Madueke made it 2-0 with a ferocious 72nd-minute finish from a tight angle inside the penalty area.
