No team faces greater travel demands or will be asked to upset the odds more this Champions League campaign than Kairat Almaty, as the debutants host Real Madrid in a historic first home fixture on Tuesday.

Kairat crossed three time zones and a record-breaking 6,900km for their first match, losing 4-1 to Sporting in Lisbon, Portugal two weeks ago.

However, facing 15-time European champions Real Madrid is even more daunting, though their location could now level the playing field.

Xabi Alonso's visitors will themselves travel 6,441km to play at the 24,000-seater Ortalyq Stadion, which is technically in central Asia.

Almaty, Kazakhstan's former southern capital, is closer to Beijing than Madrid. The Spanish giants, meanwhile, have to fly for 13 hours to reach Almaty, a flight five hours longer than it would take to reach New York.

This is a familiar venue for Tottenham given they played here in northern Norway in May.

In fact, the first time Spurs had ever played Bodo/Glimt was last season, winning 3-1 at home and 2-0 away Europa League semi-finals.

It is quite the journey to Bodo - which is north of the Arctic Circle, and you can read more about what it is like to play there here.

  3. First meeting since 2006published at 17:26 BST 30 September

    Galatasaray v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

This is the first time Galatasaray and Liverpool have met for 19 years.

Reds wonder kid Rio Ngumoha was not even born when Galatasaray boss Okan Buruk played and scored for the Turkish side against Liverpool in December 2006.

The Reds starting XI that night included Craig Bellamy, Robbie Fowler and Xabi Alonso.

Although tonight's game takes place in Istanbul, the city in which Liverpool won the 2005 Champions League, this match is at Galatasaray's Rams Park and not across Istanbul at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, where the Reds fought back from a three-goal deficit to draw 3-3 and then beat AC Milan on penalties.

  4. The Special One returns...published at 17:23 BST 30 September

    Chelsea v Benfica (20:00 BST)

Jose Mourinho - the self-proclaimed Special One - returns to Chelsea this evening in the opposing dugout as Benfica boss.

Chelsea won seven major trophies in Mourinho's two spells in charge - the Premier League on three occasions, the FA Cup and three League Cups.

"I will always be a Blue," said Mourinho when asked about his relationship with Chelsea. "I am part of their history. They are part of my history. I helped them to become a bigger Chelsea, and they helped me to become a bigger Jose.

"It will be my Chelsea before the start of the game and after the game but during the game it's my Benfica and that's all that matters.

"When I say I am not a Blue, I am only speaking about the job I have to do tomorrow."

German side Eintracht Frankfurt sit on top of the table after they fought back from conceding an early goal to beat Turkish outfit Galatasaray 5-1 on the first matchday.

Remember, each side plays eight different opponents, four at home and four away. The top eight teams at the end of the league phase skip over the next round and move into the last 16.

Those clubs finishing between ninth and 24th play in the two-legged play-offs with the winners also making the last 16. Any side that comes 25th or lower is out of European competition for the rest of the season.

Ademola Lookman starts for Atalanta against Club Brugge.

The former Everton forward has been out of favour under ex-Southampton boss Ivan Juric so far this season, but is in the first XI for the first time this season.

Lookman hit out at the club last month after handing in a transfer request after accusing the club of "breaking promises" to him.

Atalanta XI: Carnesecchi; Kossounou, Djimsiti, Ahanor; Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Bernasconi; Pasalic; Krstovic, Lookman

Club Brugge XI: Jackers; Sabbe, Ordoñez, Mechele, Seys; Sandra, Stankovic, Vanaken; Forbs, Tresoldi, Tzolis
