Captain Virgil van Dijk is playing his 54th Champions League game for Liverpool, one more than Sami Hyypia (53). The only central defender to play more games in the competition for the Reds is Jamie Carragher (80).

Van Dijk headed Liverpool's late winner in a 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid in the first league phase game of the season. Will the Netherlands centre-back get another tonight?

Liverpool have got a bit of a problem at the back. I feel they are a work in progress as they don't have the same balance. Andy Robertson has been phenomenal on the ball over the years and Milos Kerkez is nowhere near peak Robertson level. That is a bit of an issue.

Ibrahima Konate has had a dreadful start to the season, they have issues at right-back and the left-back hasn't really found his form. They have Virgil van Dijk but then only one cover at centre-half and that is Joe Gomez.

  5. 'Important we don't show fear'published at 19:53 BST 30 September

    Galatasaray v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

Okan Buruk has led Galatasaray to three successive league titles since taking charge in June 2022 but the champions of Turkey have not advanced to the knockout stages of the Champions League since 2013-14.

"It's important not to show fear," Buruk said of Liverpool's visit.

"Liverpool are especially good with the ball, but they're incredibly quick in transition. We'll consider all of this, as well as our opponent's attacking strengths, and take precautions against them.

"We'll give it our all and try to put the opponent in a difficult situation."

  6. 'We have to utilise our squad'published at 19:52 BST 30 September

Liverpool boss Arne Slot speaking to Amazon Prime: "The players have to adapt. A lot is being said about us bringing in new players but as I have tried to say a few times already we lost a few as well. It isn't that we only added players. If you bring in new players, no matter how good they are, they still have to adjust to each other."

On Salah and Isak: "We also said that we have many games to play. In a few days there’s another big game coming up.

"We have to utilise our squad and utilising doesn’t always mean from the start, players can come in as well. In many of our games, players have impacted the game coming off the bench."

On the Galatasaray fans setting off fireworks during the night: "I heard it, not myself but maybe I was in the back of the hotel or I slept really well. But yeah you see this more and more in football, that the fans of the home team do this with the away team."

  9. 'Strong midfield will be important today'published at 19:49 BST 30 September

    Bodo/Glimt v Tottenham (20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank speaking to TNT Sports about changes to his line up: "I think they [Odobert and Johnson] fit for the game plan tonight. Brennan is very good at running in behind and arriving in the box and Wilson is very good one v one and producing crosses into the box.

"Bodo/Glimt spoke about what they learned from the last game in terms of physicality and how they tried to improve in that area. I think I am more focused on us, it is not the first time we have picked this midfield. Rodri [Bentancur] Sarr and Bergvall is a very strong midfield especially in the pressing game and I think they will be important today."

On Bodo/Glimt and the artificial pitch: "It's going to be a quick pitch, a quick game. I admire Bodo so much. All coaches young and old should study them and what they do, especially in phases one to three, it's quite unique. Of course we have a plan for it and hopefully that'll work."

One player who is missing tonight for Tottenham is striker Dominic Solanke after he underwent ankle surgery.

Boss Thomas Frank told his pre-match news conference: "Dom has got that ankle issue that's been bothering him for a little while, so now we've decided to make a minor surgery.

"It's a small procedure, so that will mean he is not ready [for Bodo/Glimt] and of course Leeds [on Saturday] as well. We'll have more news about a time frame after the international break, but I don't expect it to be long."

  12. Mourinho 'happy' in Portugalpublished at 19:46 BST 30 September

    Chelsea v Benfica (20:00 BST)

Since leaving Chelsea, Jose Mourinho has also managed in the Premier League at Manchester United and Tottenham and began this season in charge of Turkish side Fenerbahce, who sacked him in August before he returned to former club Benfica this month.

He has won two and drawn one of his first three games back at Benfica, the club where he began his managerial career in 2000.

Mourinho, whose career has also included spells at Real Madrid and Roma, said he did not expect to take another position in club football.

"After 25 years [of coaching] I was expecting to go back to Portugal through the national team, not Benfica, and I'm back to Benfica so I don't have a career project," said Mourinho. "I don't try to think what can happen or what cannot happen.

"The important thing is giving everything. Now I'm in Benfica and very happy. It's a big responsibility, even for a guy like me of years in football. Benfica is a huge responsibility for different reasons."

It has been a difficult September for Chelsea and manager Enzo Maresca.

One win - coming from behind to beat Lincoln in the EFL Cup - from five games has turned the pressure up at Stamford Bridge.

I suspect Maresca needs a visit from Jose Mourinho tonight like a hole in the head.

But he says he is enjoying himself.

"Even after a challenging couple of weeks, we can look at the bigger picture and see we are growing and improving," Maresca explains in his programme notes.

"I look forward to coming to work with these players every day and thinking about how I can help them to continue improving."

  14. Problems at Chelseapublished at 19:44 BST 30 September

    Chelsea v Benfica (20:00 BST)

All the talk this evening is on Jose Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge.

But Chelsea have actually got a few problems of their own to contend with. Back-to-back defeats in the Premier League leaves them eighth.

It means they have not won a Premier League match since the international break and they left the field on Saturday to a smattering of boos following a 3-1 defeat by Brighton at home.

Matters have been made worse by an issue with red cards and injury problems with boss Enzo Maresca without his four favoured centre-backs, as well as star attacker Cole Palmer.

Their first match in the Champions League - a 3-1 defeat by Bayern Munich - was also a bit of a bump back down to earth following Club World Cup success.

  15. 'Very important to win after the defeat'published at 19:43 BST 30 September

    Chelsea v Benfica (20:00 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to TNT Sports: "It is very important to get a result, not only tonight but for sure after a defeat [v Bayern] if we are able to win the game it is very important.

"We did our job last season to be here and now hopefully we can do our part in this competition."

On Mourinho's return: "Personally I'm just focused on the game to be honest. I'm not thinking about different things and the players are exactly the same. We are focused on tonight's game because in the end that is the most important thing."

On George making his first start in the competition: "We showed since last year that he was playing games for us, he played almost all of the Conference League and in the Premier League he was playing and scoring, and this season he is doing the same, so we have faith in him. We have faith in Guiu also and Joao [Pedro] who is not fully fit. For sure we trust in Ty."

  16. 'I am here'published at 19:42 BST 30 September

    Chelsea v Benfica (20:00 BST)

Eighteen years have passed since Jose Mourinho's first spell at Chelsea ended.

There was shock. There were tears. That "sad day" at the training ground stuck with Salomon Kalou.

"It was not just a manager we were losing," said Kalou, who played for Chelsea from 2006-2012. "It was a great person, a mentor, someone who was willing to help you and fight for you.

"The reason why he's the 'Special One' is because he affects people. He brings something very special to a club."

Not everyone has such fond memories of Mourinho, of course, from his subsequent second coming at Chelsea or, indeed, some of the clubs he has managed since.

Yet Benfica will hope the aura returns on the biggest stage of all - the Champions League - as Mourinho brings his new side back to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

And the 62-year-old won't just be content with taking a seat at Europe's top table again, as close friend Jose Peseiro explained.

"He wants to go and beat Chelsea to show everyone 'I am here'," he said.
