Red Bull's Max Verstappen beat McLaren's Lando Norris to pole position at the Miami Grand Prix.

Verstappen headed Norris, who won the sprint race earlier on Saturday, by 0.065 seconds.

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, on pole for the sprint, grabbed third ahead of the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri.

Mercedes' George Russell was fifth ahead of the Williams of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, as Ferrari struggled, with Charles Leclerc eighth and Lewis Hamilton down in 12th.

Verstappen's pole, in a car with an upgraded floor this weekend, was won with a blistering first sector of the lap. The Red Bull's speed in the fast sweepers there was too much for McLaren to claw back in the remainder of the lap.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton was knocked out of Q2 and will start the race in P12. He told Sky Sports: "We will keep trying, we're only six races in but we're struggling big time.

"We're trying our hardest not to make big set-up changes, but no matter what we do it's so inconsistent every time we go out.

"We've got problems with brakes, we've got problems with this instability that we're struggling with and we're just generally not quick enough.

"Just to get through into Q3 is tough for us at the moment and once you're then on that back foot, it's hard to pick up those points.

"Tomorrow is going to be hard work but we will try again. It's the same thing for me, I'm used to it and it is what it is but I will just keep trying."

Alex Albon will start seventh tomorrow but the Williams driver has been chatting to Sky Sports about the five-second time penalty he received for an unsafe release during the sprint race: "I'm happy, but I feel so mixed right now. So disappointed about this morning; I feel like really good points for the team but in the end, driver error, yes, I'll hold my hand up to it. But I think really harsh from the stewards to do it because I did it for safety.

"So, qualifying good, happy, but I got the news about five minutes before getting ready, so I had to shake it off as much as I can and go into it. Got away from me in the last lap, made a few mistakes but overall very happy."

"Just couldn’t get in the rhythm in Q3. The car was great and really deserved more today, unfortunately. Both laps in Q3 were quite scruffy and that's the price you pay.

"It's going to tight at the front tomorrow."

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who will start third on the grid: "This weekend is going well so far. I was a bit disappointed this morning but it was good to bounce back this way. I struggled a little bit during the quali; I didn't have such a clean run like I had yesterday.

"That last lap was quite good. I was a bit too greedy into Turn One, starting the lap, but the rest of the lap was quite good, so I'm happy with it.

"The gaps are super tight and if you can gain a few hundredths then you can make up so many places. So it's really about putting everything together and so far this weekend, I'm doing that.

"Hopefully tomorrow we can have a good race."

On the session: "I did [have a lock up], it’s all should of could of stuff and I didn’t deliver. The pace is there and the car is feeling good, I’ve been feeling better than I have done over the last few weekends.

"I’ve didn’t put it together but it is what it is with Max [Verstappen] on pole and I’m P2, I’m ready to see what we can do into Turn One."

On the race: "I don’t really mind if it’s going to be dry or wet but Miami seems to be surprising quite a bit with the weather at the minute so I’m ready for both."

  13. 'Very happy with pole' - Verstappenpublished at 22:31 British Summer Time 3 May

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who secures pole position in Miami: "It's been a great qualifying. We've improved the car a tiny amount too, basically rotated it a bit better. And honestly, Q1, Q2 and Q3 it just improving every run. trying to find a bit more of the limit. Tiny moment on my final lap at Turn One, so I lost a bit there. But round here it's complicated with the tyres over a lap. But in the end it worked out well. I'm very happy to be on pole.

On tomorrow's grand prix: "Race pace, I don't know, we'll have to wait and see for the weather. But the best starting position, that's always positive. The race is a whole different story but we'll try to maximise everything we can."
