  4. Another lap under the safety carpublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 3 May

More laps are being done behind the safety car as the drivers get used to these conditions.

Oscar Piastri mentions on the team radio that even in P2 his "visibility is terrible".

  5. Can Antonelli hold on to pole?published at 17:03 British Summer Time 3 May

    Damon Hill
1996 world champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra in Miami

Kimi Antonelli will have his head full of possibilities. Talk about hard enough leading this incredible bunch of racing drivers from the front of the grid, but when you've got a wet track, his experience in these conditions is limited.

His advantage, of course, is he will be able to see where he is going. But he will be the first person to hit a puddle. The pictures we're looking out now, it's not actually raining, so if the sun breaks through, this track will dry very quickly.

  6. Formation lappublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 3 May

All the drivers head out on the formation lap behind the safety car on what looks a very wet track indeed.

Most of the field are on the intermediate compound tyres apart from Carlos Sainz who is on the wets.

Racing Bulls’ Yuki Tsunoda will be starting from the pit lane and it was a dismal start for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc after he crashed into the wall on his way to the grid, meaning he won't be in this sprint race.

The action has already started and we haven't actually got the cars to the grid. We saw from our commentary box Charles Leclerc's very sad looking car going past our window on the back of a pick-up truck - not the way [Ferrari] would've liked, but it was torrential rain, a total deluge, which you must expect in this tropical climate in Florida.

  8. Is more rain on the way?published at 16:57 British Summer Time 3 May

    F1 pit-lane reporter in Miami

We've got this small cluster of downpours; they're very heavy when they happen and just like that, they go away again.

    So, not the ideal conditions...

It was a round of congratulations for youngster Kimi Antonelli on Friday, but it's game on now as the drivers prepare for the sprint race around the Miami International Autodrome.

Will Kimi Antonelli be able to hold the lead heading into Turn One, or will McLaren's Oscar Piastri get past?

Piastri's team-mate Lando Norris will be right behind him in third piling on the pressure.

In around five minutes time we will find out how it will unfold...

  10. Smiles all round in Mercedes' garagepublished at 16:53 British Summer Time 3 May

You can't help but smile after a rookie drives a stunning lap around Miami, becoming the youngest driver to take pole in any format.

"I am over the moon," Kimi Antonelli said. "I did not expect it.

"I was feeling good in the car. I was able to improve lap by lap and find that consistency and that gap came all together. I am super happy with that."

I'm wondering if the youngster managed to get any sleep last night?!

Max Verstappen was beaming as he entered the paddock today. If you're just joining us, the Red Bull driver welcomed a daughter named Lily with his partner Kelly Piquet this week.

A big congratulations to the Dutchman!

The four-time champion won the 2024 sprint race in Miami, but this time round he will be starting fourth on the grid.

  12. Williams on the movepublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 3 May

McLaren are out in front by 77 points from second-placed Mercedes in the constructors' championship, while Red Bull and Ferrari stay put in third and fourth respectively.

There has been movement below the top four, however, as Williams' double points in Saudi means they jump above Haas by five points and into fifth place.

  13. Piastri the new leaderpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 3 May

Oscar Piastri is 10 points clear of his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris after his victories in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia during the recent triple-header.

There are points on off in the sprint race but even if Norris was to win and Piastri failed to score, the Briton won't have enough to overhaul the Australian today.

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen is 12 points adrift of Piastri in third place.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton sealed his first victory in the Ferrari during the opening sprint race of the season in Shanghai.

He qualified in pole position and led a dominant race from start to finish after defending Red Bull's Max Verstappen at the first corner.

It will be his Mercedes replacement Kimi Antonelli this time round who will be looking to get his first win in Formula 1 after just five race weekends.

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli became the youngest driver to take a Formula 1 pole position in the sprint event at the Miami Grand Prix.

The 18-year-old beat McLaren's Oscar Piastri, the championship leader, by 0.045 seconds. The second McLaren of Lando Norris was third ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, just 0.055secs behind his team-mate.

Antonelli's team-mate George Russell was fifth fastest, 0.309secs slower than the Italian rookie.

It was an outstanding performance from Antonelli, the first time he has beaten Russell in qualifying this season, and the first time he has shown a glimpse of the huge potential Mercedes believed they saw in him when they chose him to replace Lewis Hamilton for this year.

We set the grid yesterday for the sprint event, so here's how today's race works.

The shorter dash is 100km, or 19 laps in Miami, and there are no pit stops.

The top eight finishers score points, from eight for first place to one for eighth spot, which will get added to the overall drivers' championship standings.

Following this sprint weekend in Miami, Belgium, Austin in Texas, Sao Paulo and Qatar host the remaining four events.

  17. Team radio - Leclerc to Ferraripublished at 16:39 British Summer Time 3 May

"No, no! Complete aquaplaning - I was not even pushing hard."

  18. Leclerc out of sprintpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 3 May

Charles Leclerc will not be competing in the sprint race. The Ferrari driver was due to start in P6, but after crashing into the wall he had to stop and was unable to make his way back to the pit lane.

He will be gutted with that!

  19. Umbrellas are outpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 3 May

The weather forecast lied to me, it was looking dry and sunny for today's race but it has been lashing down with rain in Miami.

What was already going to be an exciting race could now be even more of a box office display. Strap in folks!

  20. Leclerc into the wallpublished at 16:33 British Summer Time 3 May

    Oh no!

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc has hit the wall while he was driving his car round to the starting grid. His tyres look like they are about to drop off!
