The track is evolving so quickly, everybody is going to get quicker and quicker. I don't think it's going to be too long before teams are genuinely thinking about going on a soft tyre.

The crowd go "oooooh" as one, as Lando Norris slides across the slippery track. The McLaren driver doesn't travel too far, however, and is able to keep his car on the right path to go second on the timesheets with a 1:37.607. Max Verstappen is the quickest driver so far.

They are sussing out where the grip is, this is the first time they've been out in these conditions. There is very little water in large parts of this circuit.

It's really hard to read going forward and I'm looking forward to the next hour. You look at the weather now and there's a little bit of blue sky and a lot of cloud cover as well.

We are expecting rain at some point I believe, 60% chance of rain in the session.

    Thanks, Alicia!

Summer has arrived (sort of) at Silverstone. The sun has come out and the 5.891km circuit is drying slowly, so the intermediate tyre could be the first choice at the start of Q1.

Will we see a British driver on pole? Lando Norris told Sky Sports a few moments ago: "I would love it to be dry but it's going to be in the middle like last year."

The last couple of qualifying sessions have been tightly contested. The feeling is that no-one genuinely knows who will take pole position today.

It’s looking dry for now, but never underestimate the British weather.

I would suggest strapping in for this one folks, it’s set to be a thriller.

Air temp at Silverstone just 12.3C & the track at 18.2C. Blustery W/WNW wind with gusts lately to 24mph. Showers in the wider vicinity; a few spots of rain in last few minutes, but nothing significant currently.

  13. A different team on the cards for qualifying?published at 14:50 British Summer Time 6 July

It doesn’t get more exciting than this, four different teams with four different drivers have taken pole in the last four races.

Currently a driver at Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari have all put on a fastest lap to grab pole.

The Silverstone track is one of the drivers’ favourites on the F1 calendar with its long high-speed corners and makes for an excellent qualifying.

The Silverstone-based team are struggling to make an impact in qualifying and sit at the front with the top four teams.

Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll haven’t managed to finish in the top ten in the last two qualifying sessions.

The team introduced upgrades several races ago and this weekend have brought a new front wing and rear corner.

Can they turn it around today?
