George Russell led a home one-two-three in British Grand Prix qualifying from Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Russell beat Hamilton to pole position by 0.171 seconds with Norris, second to Russell after the first laps in the final session, 0.211secs off the pace after failing to complete his second lap.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was fourth fastest, struggling with a car damaged by a run through the Copse gravel trap in the wet first session.

Three home drivers are leading the charge at Silverstone.

The hopes of an all-British podium could become a reality tomorrow but will Max Verstappen have a say in the result from fourth on the grid?

Sam: Mercedes are back!! Mercedes front row lockout, a British top 3 at Silverstone, time to show that Max what Britain can deliver, tomorrows gonna be epic.

Jeremiah Kariuki: Mercedes front row and a British 1-2-3. That's a dream one for the teams and the fans. The long race is tomorrow. May they give us exciting and entertaining race.

Lando Norris in the McLaren finished qualifying in third, he said: “I’m happy with P3, three Brits lock out the top three so that’s pretty cool here. There were good laps by George and Lewis both they put in some nice laps and a little mistake from my part at the end but P3 is still good.”

On tomorrow’s race, he added: “I'm excited, it's going to be a good race. We're quick, I can bring the fight to George and Lewis so I'm excited to put on a good show tomorrow. I hope we are going to have some good battles, I look forward to it."

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, who qualified in P2 and will start alongside team-mate George Russell on the front row: "Big thanks to this incredible crowd; three Brits in the top three. And congratulations to George, he did such an amazing job.

"We definitely didn't expect to be front row this weekend but this is huge for us. The car felt fantastic. Everyone in the garage, all our team that have come here really deserve this.

"As I said, the car felt great. it was just about getting the tyre temperatures in the right place and sealing the deal when you knew you had the time on track.

"I think, ultimately, there was still time left on the table - which George was able to find. But I feel really confident about the car tomorrow, and with the conditions we have we can work together to keep Lando behind."

Mercedes’ George Russell earns his first pole at the British Grand Prix, he said afterwards: “What a feeling, at the start of this year I don’t think we could of even dreamt of being on pole here, one-two for me and Lewis, and Lando it’s just mega. It’s down to these fans as well they give us so much energy so thank you for that.”

He will be coming off the back of a win last weekend in Austria, he added: “The car at the moment is feeling so good, it really came alive in quali and what a joy to drive around this circuit. We are riding this wave at the moment and I’m absolutely buzzing, but eyes on tomorrow, we’ve got a race to win and it’s going to be tight with Lando, Max is going to be fast as well but I’m so excited right now.”

On the home crowd, he said: “The crowd always gives us so much energy, the three of us, I don’t think Silverstone could of dreamt of, you know three Brits in the top three, the support we love it and we can’t wait for the race tomorrow.”

There was no "Yabba Dabba Do!" for securing pole position like his race win in Spielberg, just a simple "Wahooooo!" from George Russell this weekend.

Over at Red Bull, Max Verstappen said over team radio: "I gave it everything. Guys, thank you very much for trying to fix it [the damage] as much as we could, yeah great effort.

"Just really unlucky we got off there, with the rain. We'll go at it tomorrow."

George Russell says it's down to the fans at Silverstone that three British drivers have ended up taking up the top three places on the grid for tomorrow's race. Loads of energy, adds the Mercedes man.

Lando Norris abandoned his final attempt but the McLaren driver will still line up on the second row in P3. Max Verstappen will start fourth and Oscar Piastri qualifies in fifth place.

And well done, Nico Hulkenberg! The Haas man takes sixth spot for Sunday's British Grand Prix.

The man of the moment when it really mattered is George Russell, who would have thought we would of had two Mercedes at the front of this grid.

What can Lewis Hamilton do? He can go onto pole!

But wait. George Russell has snatched it back from his team-mate!

Lando Norris doesn't improve so it's a British one, two and three for tomorrow's grand prix at Silverstone!

The first sector has not been a smooth ride for Max Verstappen as the Red Bull twitches just before the Wellington Straight. The three-time world champion completes his lap but can only go fourth quickest.

Ferrari Charles Leclerc spoke to Jennie Gow in the pit-lane after failing to get into Q3 of qualifying. He said: "Everything [went wrong], the feeling in the car is just not good, we are struggling. We've been doing quite a lot of testing with the two cars and trying to understand which was the best direction to push in that one.

"I reverted today to a different configuration. All in all, I don't think we optimised everything that was possible today."

Here we go again.

Max Verstappen is unlikely to feature in this final showdown in Q3, given his Red Bull is limping slightly. George Russell is the car to knock off the front-row spot.
