  1. Birdie for Schefflerpublished at 18:00 British Summer Time

    McIlroy +2, Schauffele +2, Scheffler -1 (16*)

Scottie Scheffler has a decent eagle chance on the seventh as he's just off the front of the green only 17 feet away, but he can't quite find his second eagle of the day and instead settles for a birdie.

  2. Postpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time

    McIlroy +2, Schauffele +2, Scheffler E (15*)

From a brilliant drive it's a pretty awful second shot from Rory McIlroy who pulls a six iron badly to the left of the green and ends up in some lush rough on a big slope.

He needs to get up and down from there for a much-needed birdie.

  3. Fox fishing for the leadpublished at 17:55 British Summer Time

    Fox -4 (67)

"I guarantee I'd be going fishing at least once."

However, Ryan Fox's plans for this weekend changed dramatically last Sunday when he chipped in from 50 yards to win in a play-off at the Myrtle Beach Classic and clinch a place at this tournament.

The best rank he has had in a major is a tie for third after round one at the 2019 Open where he went on to finish 16th. He is currently in third again, after a four-under 67.

That is only one shot off his best ever major championship round, which was a five-under 66 in the 2017 US PGA Championship - also at Quail Hollow.

  4. Smalley's impressive roundpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time

    Smalley -4 (67)

Alex Smalley signs for an opening-round 67 in just his fourth major championship start.

He started the week as an alternate and only started after Sahith Theegala withdrew on Wednesday.

The North Carolina resident also knocked in a 71-foot putt for eagle, earlier. It has been quite a day for the 28-year-old.

  5. A fairway!published at 17:51 British Summer Time

    McIlroy +2, Schauffele +2, Scheffler E (15*)

Rory McIlroy tees it down a bit on the par-five seventh to smack a low, almost stinger and it does the trick as he finds the fairway with a little ripper!

That's just his third fairway of the day....

  6. Noren two off the leadpublished at 17:49 British Summer Time

    Noren -3 (68)

Alex Noren is back in the hutch with a three-under 68 in the books. The Swede will rue successive bogeys on 16 and 17 and a poor birdie attempt on the last from eight feet, but given he's on the way back from injury, that's a solid start.

  7. Later wave prepare to tee offpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time

Don't go anywhere as we've got plenty of quality on the way.

    • 18:03 Tyrrell Hatton (Eng), Adam Scott (Aus), Will Zalatoris (US)
    • 18:14 Dustin Johnson (US), Collin Morikawa (US), Justin Thomas (US)
    • 18:25 Ludvig Aberg (Swe), Patrick Reed (US), Jordan Spieth (US)
    • 18:47 Bryson DeChambeau (US), Viktor Hovland (Nor), Gary Woodland (US)
    • 18:58 Daniel Berger (US), Sergio Garcia (Spa), Russell Henley (US)
    • 19:09 Brian Harman (US), Justin Rose (Eng), Cameron Smith (Aus)
  8. Postpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time

    Jaeger -5, MacIntyre -3 (16)

Our leader is following Bob MacIntyre on the par-four 16th, which is the hardest hole on the course so far today.

Bob's birdie putt, about 25 feet up the hill, is slow and he can't get his ball to the hole. Par.

What has Stephan Jaeger learned? Next to nothing. His ball also pulls up a couple of feet short. Par.

  9. Postpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time

    McIlroy +2 (15*)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

This is the hole where he needs to do something Rory McIlroy-like.

Just to try and get some momentum into his week.

  10. Postpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time

    McIlroy +2, Schauffele +2, Scheffler E (15*)

Pretty ordinary stuff from this star-studded grouping, with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler missing the green and having to produce a chip and a putt for par.

Xander Schauffele finds the short stuff but he's a mile away and it's a two-putt par for him.

  11. Bogey finish for Lowrypublished at 17:41 British Summer Time

    Lowry +2 (73)

Shane Lowry is finishing up his round on the ninth with a 15-footer for par. He pulls that a little, so it's another dropped shot for the Irishman.

He was three over after seven, got back to one over but after a run of four pars ends with another bogey.

  12. Gerard climbs leaderboardpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time

    Gerard -4 (12)

    Ryan Gerard's last three holes. 10th = birdie. 11th = birdie. 12th = birdie.

The 25-year-old American debutant is up into a tie for second after jumping aboard the birdie train.

  13. 'The old captain still has life in him'published at 17:35 British Summer Time

    Donald -4 (67)

    Luke DonaldImage source, Getty Images

Here's Luke Donald on his opening round.

"It's a great score for me," he said on Sky Sports. "I haven't been trending towards something like this, but that's golf.

"I putted really well and a 67 on a course that's not suited to my game is pleasing. It felt like the hole was a little bigger which is a nice feeling in golf.

"It's my second time around and I've got the gist of this captaincy [of the European Ryder Cup team] and it's nice to throw in a good round to show the boys that the old captain still has a bit of life in him."

  14. Rahm makes fourth bogey in six holespublished at 17:32 British Summer Time

    Cantlay +4, Fitzpatrick -2, Rahm E (15*)

Jon Rahm goes right off the tee on the long par-three sixth. His pitch leaves a testing 10-foot putt that he slides past the cup.

That's a fourth bogey in six holes. He does not look happy at all.

  15. Postpublished at 17:32 British Summer Time

    McIlroy +2, Schauffele +2, Scheffler E (14*)

It was actually only 16 feet Rory McIlroy left himself for birdie on the fifth hole, but he couldn't find the hole so it's another par.

At two over he'll want to find a couple of birdies to end the day at level par at least.

  16. Jaeger takes leadpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time

    Jaeger -5, MacIntyre -3 (15)

    Stephan JaegerImage source, Getty Images

An outside eagle chance from 30+ feet trundles a good five or six feet past the hole for Stephan Jaeger on the par-five 15th but the German coolly knocks in the return to edge one clear of the field.

He's playing with Bob MacIntyre and the Scot follows him in with his fourth birdie of the round to sit two off the pace.

  17. Ready for another US PGA Block party?published at 17:30 British Summer Time

Anyone remember when a club professional almost stole the show from eventual US PGA Champion, Brooks Koepka, in 2023?

Yep Michael Block, 48, delivered one of the most incredible moments in US PGA Championship history with his hole-in-one at Oak Hill in 2023 on his way to a tie for 15th.

It was the best finish by a club pro at the PGA Championship since Tommy Aycock finished T-11 at Tanglewood GC in 1974.

Block is back again for his seventh appearance (fourth consecutive) in the US PGA and let's face it, he's hard to miss with his rather vibrant polo shirts.

The last club pro to appear in four or more consecutive PGA Championships was Alex Beach, who played in five between 2019-2023, and he definitely wore far less

  18. Smalley grabs share of leadpublished at 17:19 British Summer Time

    Smalley -4 (17*)

Wonderful approach from Alex Smalley, who zips into five feet and then sinks a sliding left-to-right putt from five feet for birdie.

He is now perched on four under in a five-way tie for the lead.

  19. Well played captain Lukepublished at 17:19 British Summer Time

    Donald -4 (67)

If you're just joining us, it's been quite the round by Luke Donald in the early stages of the US PGA Championship.

A clutch par putt from nine feet on the 18th rounds off a bogey-free 67 that sees him tied for the clubhouse lead.

Not bad for a 47-year-old who told BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter that he would be happy to just make it through to the weekend given he expected the course would play way too long for him.

  20. Rory still struggling off the teepublished at 17:19 British Summer Time

    McIlroy +2, Schauffele +2, Scheffler E (13*)

Rory McIlroy is in recovery mode again on the fifth after pulling his drive into the fairway bunker off the left. It's an attacking resposne right at the flag, but his struggles off the tee will be a big worry.
