Summary

  1. Scheffler starts with a birdiepublished at 15:32 BST 18 July

    Lowry -1, C Morikawa +4, Scheffler -4 (1)

Scottie Scheffler makes the ideal start as he kicks off his second round with birdie.

The American putts a seven footer, quickly grabs an umbrella then briskly strides off to the second tee. Shane Lowry bags par.

  2. English bags a birdiepublished at 15:27 BST 18 July

    English -5, Finau -4 (17)

Terrific guts from Harris English over at the 17th as he buries a birdie putt from nine feet to move back to five under.

Amid the gathering gloom, he's hanging tough.

Tony Finau is in for a par and he'll stay at four under.

  3. Birdie for Westwoodpublished at 15:26 BST 18 July

    Detry +1, Gotterup -2, Westwood -2 (7)

Woe betide anyone who banked on that earlier sunshine lasting for the rest of the day with their clothing choices. There's plenty of people huddling under whatever bits of cover they can find. Meanwhile, Lee Westwood has gone back to two under with birdie after a six-foot putt on the seventh.

  4. Postpublished at 15:25 BST 18 July

    Fleetwood -2, McIlroy -3, Thomas -1 (17)

Tommy Fleetwood in a spot of bother with a slice off the 18th tee almost going into the crowd. He plays a provisional but finds the original and then hacks it out towards the green.

Rory McIlroy finds the dancefloor with his second after a nice enough drive, a long way from the flag so he'd take a par from here.

  5. Postpublished at 15:24 BST 18 July

    Fitzpatrick -5 (3)

Just a hint of Scottie Scheffler footwork from Matt Fitzpatrick with an aggressive tee shot on four, before he then thumps an eight iron onto the green.

He does this as the rain batters down, and he scurries back under his umbrella as soon as he hits that approach.

We can hardly hear the players speak in the tent used for the post-round blether, as the rain hammers off the roof of the canvas. Much more of this and Noah will be sailing past…

  7. Postpublished at 15:23 BST 18 July

    Rahm -1, Schauffele E, Spaun +2 (1)

Straightforward pars at the first for the stellar trio of Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm and JJ Spaun.

They swiftly return to the safety of their umbrellas.

  8. Jordan drops a shotpublished at 15:23 BST 18 July

    Jordan -4 (6)

Well, it seems we may have jinxed Matthew Jordan as he ends up holing a bogey on the sixth with a three-putt.

A first blemish on his round two scorecard and he drops back to four under.

With 11 cuts made from 11 Open appearances, no player in the field at Royal Portrush has played the weekend of this championship more without ever missing out than Jordan Spieth.

That streak looked in jeopardy with a two over yesterday but a round of 69 today has undone the damage.

The 2017 champion has been a popular figure here with the crowds and they'll have two more opportunities to watch the American in action.

  10. 'Dechambeau was tremendous, but not in contention'published at 15:21 BST 18 July

    DeChambeau +1 (65)

    Alex Miceli
US golf reporter on BBC Radio 5 live

Considering Bryson DeChambeau’s history in this tournament, it was tremendous but I have to disagree that he’s still in contention here.

He’s got a long way to go clearly on a course he has not had a lot of success on, for one day.

  13. 'Can I have your ball, please?'published at 15:20 BST 18 July

The scramble of kids in the 18th grandstand above the exit, hoping to catch a ball, is quite the spectacle.

Some of them seem to have it down to a fine art. Sprinting from their seat, picking the best position, catching it with their cap. Honestly, it's impressive!

    Just wait until Rory arrives!

This weather update is rather self explanatory.

The coats are going on in the 18th grandstand just as McIlroy gets ready to launch the ball this way.

Here comes the drops...and they are big ones.

  15. Aberg almost finishes with birdiepublished at 15:18 BST 18 July

    Aberg -2 (67), Hovland E (69), Spieth E (69)

Ludvig Aberg, Viktor Hovland and Jordan Spieth have just finished at the 18th.

We've not really covered them but all three have had decent days. Spieth and Hovland have both shot two-under 69s while Aberg is cradling his head in frustration after missing a birdie putt for a five-under 66.

They'll all make the cut comfortably.

  18. Scheffler & Lowry tee off at the firstpublished at 15:15 BST 18 July

    Lowry -1, C Morikawa +4, Scheffler -3 (15:10)

Over on the first tee Shane Lowry and Scotti Scheffler both hit the fairway with the first shot of their rounds.

Collin Morikawa, however, manages to find the bunker with his drive.

  19. Postpublished at 15:13 BST 18 July

    Jordan -5 (5)

Matthew Jordan keeps himself at five under par with a two-putt on the fifth.

The first holes of his second round have been par, birdie, par, birdie, par - if that's anything to go by we're expecting big things at the par-three sixth.

  20. Postpublished at 15:13 BST 18 July

    English -4, Finau -4 (16)

After that dropped shot from Harris English at 15, I can wrap him together with playing partner Tony Finau as they're both at -4.

And it's Finau who ought to be walking off the 16th with a birdie but he's missed from seven feet.

Both stay where they are with two holes to go.
