  2. Masses on great form todaypublished at 11:57 British Summer Time

    Matt Gault
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

Journalists are required to stay tight to the ropes. Media liaison officers are directing us at all times, ushering over here and pointing over there.

It means you're never too far away from all the punter chat and the masses seem on great form today.

The three-day weekend is officially here.

  3. Fine par for Fleetwoodpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time

    Fleetwood -1, McIlroy -1, Thomas E (6)

Tommy Fleetwood missed the sixth green on the short side where Justin Rose made bogey from earlier, but he makes a much better fist of things as he sticks it close with his chip up that steep bank and knocks it in for par.

A par too for Rory McIlroy who hit the middle of the green and gave himself an outside chance for 20 feet. He two putted to make what for him is the most steady par of the day.

  4. MacIntyre two off the leadpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time

    DeChambeau +5, MacIntyre -3, Rose -2 (7)

Justin Rose looks a little accusingly at his club head as a pitch from the front of the green whistles long and right of the hole. Obviously didn't catch that as he would have liked. He'll have 20 feet left for birdie on the par five - misses left and it's a par for Rose.

Bob MacIntyre is left of the green but pin-high in two and leaves it five feet away for birdie. The Scot makes no mistake. Two off Brian Harman's lead.

Bryson DeChambeau registers a birdie to move to two under for the day but, at five over for the tournament, he'll need a few more of those if he's going to be around for the weekend.

  5. Par for Englishpublished at 11:49 British Summer Time

    English -4 (5)

Giant putt from Harris English at the par-four fifth as he tries to retrieve the shot he coughed up at the last hole.

Fifty feet is always unlikely to offer that up but he's judged it very well indeed to ensure a tap-in par.

    He'll stay one back.

    Tunnel at Royal Portrush

Here's something you don't see too often on the Open rota. A tunnel in the middle of the links.

This is out at the far end of the course at the confluence of the sixth, eighth and 10th greens, and the ninth tee.

It was bedlam on Thursday afternoon as the marquee groups edged their way round and this little hollow created a haven away from the madness for the players.

  7. A par for leader Harmanpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time

    Harman -5 (8)

Our leader Brian Harman makes a safe par on the eighth hole. A long birdie attempt was judged well by the American.

It was in the second round at Hoylake two years ago that Harman made his move with a six-under-par round of 65 and he eventually cantered to the finish line from there.

He's three under for his round today.

  8. 'Hatton emotion part of what makes him'published at 11:47 British Summer Time

    Henley +2, Hatton -4, Lee +5 (7)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

He's perhaps not somebody who you'd say is a great role model when he loses his cool, but that's how he expresses himself and he admits he goes over the line and that's what you get.

If you want Tyrrell to be the player he is, you have to accept it.

Sometimes players can lose their identity or fire and it affects their game.

Lucas Glover, the 2009 US Open champion, was briefly in a share of the lead on Thursday and he's started well today.

His birdie on the third hole goes alongside his three pars to leave him three under for the tournament.

  11. Shot gonepublished at 11:44 British Summer Time

    Fleetwood -1, McIlroy -1, Thomas E (5)

A bad bogey in the end for Rory McIlroy and definitely a shot gone to the field as the fifth was the third easiest hole on the course yesterday and will yield plenty of birdies again today.

BUT you get punished for hitting bad shots at Portrush, and finding that bunker short left of the green (as you can see) is just a no-no if you want to take advantage.

  12. 'Hatton vents at missed chance'published at 11:43 British Summer Time

    Henley +1, Hatton -4, Lee +5 (6)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

He's venting right now. He was gesticulating as if the grass had made a negative impact on the putt.

He's fuming he's let a birdie opportunity go there.

  13. Frustration for Tyrrellpublished at 11:42 British Summer Time

    Hatton -4 (7)

The 602-yard par-five seventh is playing second easiest so far today so Tyrrell Hatton has some justification for having a chunter to himself as he trudges off the green with a par.

Two big swipes had got him within 20 yards of the holes but he took three more from there, missing a 15-foot birdie putt.

Still just one off the lead though.

  14. 'Box office from McIlroy'published at 11:41 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -2 (4)

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour winner on 5 Live

McIlroy decided to take some of the slope out of play and pitch it onto the putting surface over the ridge and ten feet must have been the best he can do.

    Nerve and confidence. Box office.

  15. Two parspublished at 11:41 British Summer Time

    Bezuidenhout -4, R. Hojgaard -4 (10)

Just outside chances for birdies for both as the pair hit the green in regulation but it's two pars here for both Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Rasmus Hojgaard who are both preety serenly making their way around the course.

They're both only one shot off the lead and if they do no better than four under they won't be too far off come the end of the day.

  16. Postpublished at 11:41 British Summer Time

    Aberg E, Hovland E, Spieth E (6)

Viktor Hovland three-putted on the fifth green to make bogey, but he gives himself a lengthy look at birdie on the par-three sixth to get that shot straight back.

Not this time for the Norwegian. He stays at level par for the tournament and two under for today - an identical record to his two playing partners.

  17. English slips off leadpublished at 11:41 British Summer Time

    English -4 (4)

We're going to see plenty of leader swings today and Harris English has dropped off the top with a clumsy bogey at the fourth.

2023 champion Brian Harman out in front on his own now.

  18. Postpublished at 11:39 British Summer Time

It looks tremendous out there as well at the moment.

Short sleeves and not an umbrella in sight.

Maybe that's what Jason is getting at?

  19. Blame it on the Weathermanpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time

We love a good bit of weather chat don't we?

Surprise, surprise the golfers have been loving it too - the chat that is - and none more so than Australian Jason Day.

To quote everyone's* favourite Irish 90's band B*Witched: "Blame it on the Weatherman...."

*Note - B*Witched, Boyzone, Westlife. In that order.

Has anyone asked Day about his favourite Irish bands?

  20. Bunker troublepublished at 11:38 British Summer Time

    Fleetwood -1, McIlroy -2, Thomas E (4)

Rory McIlroy found the bunker off the fifth tee going for the green on this stunning hole. Players are being called up today as they should as it's basically a long par three for the field.

It's not to be trifled with though, as McIlroy can only dig it out of the deep sand trap and then his chip up the green leaves him with plenty of work to do to save par.

You see, just making holes longer doesn't make them better - course design is key - and this design is just incredible.
