Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin looks set to miss the cut at his home Open after ending the second round on three over par: "It's very frustrating. I started off lovely and I was playing lovely. I was one under after seven and made a silly mistake on eight.

"It's been a frustrating last two days. I've played some really nice golf. I think it's the best I've played in the four majors I've played in. There was just a few silly mistakes.

"It's very frustrating with the way I think I've been playing. I birdied the first and made some really nice chances, and to drop those shots that I didn't think were too poor of a shot, they were more of a mistake, that's what is more frustrating than anything.

"It was a great week, the whole way through with the crowds and everything, but it wasn't meant to be."

Scottie Scheffler and Shane Lowry are both in with birdie chances on the penultimate hole after making the green with handy approach shots.

  3. Birdie for Schauffele at 17published at 20:04 BST 18 July

    Rahm -1, Schauffele -3, Spaun E (17)

Up ahead of Scottie Scheffler at the 17th green, Xander Schauffele has nine feet to get his fifth birdie of an excellent round.

    In it goes.

    He's been excellent today.

A frustrated JJ Spaun assesses his missed par putt as he drops to level for the tournament.

Scottie Scheffler grabs a share of the lead at Royal Portrush.

The American downs a putt from 17 feet on the par-three 16th to collect a birdie and join Matt Fitzpatrick at the top of the standings.

Two holes go, can the world number one pull a short or two clear?

  6. 'Fitzpatrick made it look easy'published at 19:55 BST 18 July

    Fitzpatrick -9 (66)

    Fantastic effort from Matt Fitzpatrick.

His ball striking has been brilliant today. In the last few holes there was obviously a few looser ones when the weather came in but before that he was in full flow, and it was a pleasure to watch.

He made it look very easy - centre of the fairway, centre of the green, rolling puts in.

The weather came in and just messed him up a little bit, but he will be pleased with that overall

  7. Fitzpatrick pars the lastpublished at 19:48 BST 18 July

    Wow, what a par putt!

Matt Fitzpatrick holes for a four from 25 feet or so and he will sign for a 66.

Will that be enough to lead The Open on his own overnight, or will Scottie Scheffler have something to say about that?

  8. Long par putt left for Fitzpatrickpublished at 19:46 BST 18 July

    Fitzpatrick -9 (17)

Matt Fitzpatrick takes his time over his chip from the left of the green. There is a lot of distance and some undulations to negotiate.

The Englishman doesn't get enough on it and he's still got more than 20 feet to go for par.

  9. Lowry birdies 15published at 19:46 BST 18 July

    Lowry -2, Morikawa +8, Scheffler -7 (15)

Great pace from Scottie Scheffler as he putts from off the side of the 15th green.

It's not going in but it delivers a stress-free par.

Delight for Shane Lowry as his putter delivers for him.

He's up to two under par.

  10. Bogey for Rahmpublished at 19:43 BST 18 July

    A bogey on 16 won't help Jon Rahm's mood.

His par attempt from about five feet slides by the edge of the hole.

Matt Fitzpatrick leads the field for birdies made (12) and strokes gained around the green (+3.35).

Can he finish with a flourish at the last?

The distance is good, but the line is not. The bank feeds it even more left and he'll need to scramble a par from off the green for a 66.

We said two over might not be enough to make the cut - Fitzpatrick's playing partner Ryan Fox, on three over, almost holed from the fairway for eagle that would have definitely got him into the weekend! Now he needs to make birdie from seven feet, and then hope...

In contrast to last night when the crowds stayed in tremendous numbers to follow Rory McIlroy, there is much more room to move about out here.

There's still plenty of noise being generated, though, with the world number one walking down the 15th to chants of: "There's only one Scottie Scheffler!"

  13. Postpublished at 19:37 BST 18 July

    Lowry -1, Morikawa +6, Scheffler -8 (14)

The rough took a little bit off Scottie Scheffler's approach into the 15th green and his ball comes up short.

He may be looking enviously at the balls of Shane Lowry and Collin Morikawa, which are positioned very nicely on the putting surface

  14. What is the cut line?published at 19:36 BST 18 July

Exactly 70 players are at one over par or above, so if it stays the same, anyone below that mark will be going home before the weekend.

Still a little way to go in round two though, so it could very quickly change.

  15. 'Rahm has been grumpy for five or six holes'published at 19:34 BST 18 July

We feel nothing’s really happening with this group but they’re all under par, they’re all right in this tournament.

We’ve talked a lot about Tyrrell Hatton and how he seems to get annoyed and he doesn’t let it affect the next shot but Jon has just looked grumpy for five or six holes.

How will Matt Fitzpatrick recover from that missed birdie putt on the previous hole? When you're leading a tournament and you miss a short putt like that, it's got to come as a massive shock to the system.

His drive down the 18th is a great one, in position A on the fairway.

Four holes to go for Scottie Scheffler and he's just found the first cut of rough down the right hand side of the 15th fairway.

Here's our flyover of the hole to help you picture it.

His ball is just past the final fairway bunker.

    Rahm -1, Schauffele -2, Spaun -1 (15)

Jon Rahm dribbles a putt from the front of the 15th green towards the cup and secures another par.

It's been another one of those days that the Spaniard regularly seems to have at majors, when everything seems in decent order but that spark just fails to ignite.

JJ Spaun bogeys the hole but these three should all be around for the weekend, barring anything silly down the final stretch.

They're currently debating on 5 Live whether those at one under par are still in this tournament.

Even though Matt Fitzpatrick just missed that, he still has an eight-shot advantage.

And about 26 players in between.

    What do you think?

Thumbs if the likes of Jon Rahm, Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood are still in with a shout at -1.

Oh my word - the old horseshoe around the cup and Matt Fitzpatrick misses the birdie chance to move clear.

    Wowzers.
