Summary

  1. Westwood goes closepublished at 17:52 BST 18 July

    Detry E, Gotterup -4, Westwood -2 (15)

Fine margins for Lee Westwood. Fine margins.

The 52-year-old has a seven foot birdie putt at the 15th after he followed up a lovely tee shot with a nice approach. However, Westwood trims the edge of the hole before tapping in.

Without a flicker of emotion he retrieves his ball and moves on to the next hole.

  2. Postpublished at 17:51 BST 18 July

    Li -8 (17)

Here comes Haotong Li down the last and he's picked out the green with his second shot.

He will have 20 feet or so for a closing birdie - and the outright lead.

  3. Bogey for Rahmpublished at 17:48 BST 18 July

    Rahm -1, Schauffele -1, Spaun -1 (9)

Jon Rahm posts a bogey five after that wayward tee shot on the ninth. With JJ Spaun making birdie, that means all three players in this group are one under par for the tournament.

If you find the rough at Royal Portrush, you often find trouble. Here's Ken Brown...

  4. The 'most handsome man in China'?published at 17:46 BST 18 July

I've just learned that our co-leader has the words: "Haotong Li is the most handsome man in China" printed on one of the wedges in his golf bag.

Given there are approximately 1.4 billion people in China, it is quite the claim.

  5. Scheffler's birdie streak endspublished at 17:44 BST 18 July

    Lowry -2, C Morikawa +4, Scheffler -7 (8)

Scottie Scheffler's brilliant streak of three consecutive birdies is brought to a halt at the eighth as a putt from 24 feet comes up just short. The world number one duly rolls it in for par.

He's well place at seven under.

  6. Postpublished at 17:43 BST 18 July

    Rahm -2 (8)

Jon Rahm's original ball is found but it's a horrible lie in deep rough. The Spaniard hacks it out sideways to the other side of the fairway and he has work to do to save par.

  7. Li just misses birdie puttpublished at 17:43 BST 18 July

    Li -8 (17)

I don't think Haotong Li can quite believe his birdie putt has not dropped over at 17.

That looked bang on line but when it reached the hole it just kept going.

Onto the last for the co-leader.

  8. Fitzpatrick into tie for leadpublished at 17:41 BST 18 July

    Fitzpatrick -8 (11)

No mistake from six feet for Matt Fitzpatrick, who is now into a share of the lead.

It's so good to see him contending at the majors again after a rough spell of form.

  9. Postpublished at 17:39 BST 18 July

    Rahm -2 (8)

Jon Rahm goes way left off the ninth tee - so far left that within a couple of seconds of hitting it, he asks his caddie to chuck him another ball so he can play a provisional.

Will wait to see if that first one gets found.

Meanwhile, the Open's shot tracker says Xander Schauffele mashed his tee shot 364 yards and is about 50 yards short of the flag on the par four.

  10. Gotterup bogeypublished at 17:39 BST 18 July

    Detry E, Gotterup -4, Westwood -2 (14)

Chris Gotterup's challenge suffers a mini setback as he drops a shot on the 14th - his first bogey today. Lee Westwood grinds out another par.

  11. Back-to-back birdies for Jordanpublished at 17:37 BST 18 July

    Jordan -4 (13)

This is much better from Matthew Jordan, who drains an 11-foot putt for birdie on the 13th.

After bogeys on either side of the turn the Englishman has now bagged back-to-back birdies.

He's straight back to four under.

Matt Fitzpatrick about to join the leaders?

Six feet left for birdie on the 11th.

Purgatory: The seventeenth hole at Royal Portrush is a 409-yard par four.

Two holes left for Haotong Li and this is what's on the cards for him.

He's taken that tee shot on and biffed it straight down the fairway.

Can he find a birdie to take the outright lead?

Jon Rahm finds the sand from the eighth tee and has to play out sideways.

He has 18 feet left to save par - the Spaniard gives it every chance but it slides by the left edge.

  15. Birdie for Jordanpublished at 17:25 BST 18 July

    Jordan -3 (12)

Nice job from Matthew Jordan at the par-five 12th.

Despite finding the semi-rough and then the actual rough, he splashes out to just three-and-a-half feet from the pin.

A timely birdie after a bit of a rough patch.

  16. Scheffler bags third birdie in a rowpublished at 17:24 BST 18 July

Scottie Scheffler has taken off the gilet now the sun is out and is the only player on the course, we think, who is playing in a hoodie. It's a smart grey hoodie, but a hoodie nonetheless.

The American's charge up the leaderboard continues and after putting his third birdie in a row he is now just one shot off the lead.

Shane Lowry has had a few birdie chances but his putter is a bit chilly at the moment.

  17. Par for Lipublished at 17:24 BST 18 July

    Li -8 (16)

Chance for Haotong Li to get ahead again at Calamity Corner - the 16th.

His birdie putt turns how he wants but unfortunately a tad early and stays away from the hole.

Tidies up from two feet and moves on.

  18. Fitzpatrick one off the leadpublished at 17:23 BST 18 July

    Fitzpatrick -7 (10)

Matt Fitzpatrick doesn't look best pleased with his approach to the 10th but he gets a very nice bounce off the slope to the left of the green and his ball comes to rest about 15 feet from the hole.

Great putt! The Sheffield man back to seven under once again.

Viktor Hovland has put in a serious shift on the practice putting green after his round today.

He managed to spare some time to grab a quick selfie and have a chat with a few of the people watching.

The fans in Portrush have been loving him here this week and this is exactly why!

Lee Westwood's body language says 'que sera sera' as he rolls in a birdie putt at the 13th to move back to two under.

He looks relaxed and comfortable in his own skin. Or just happy the rain has abated and the sun is out.
