Goodness me, that's a good shot from Matt Fitzpatrick.

He uses a cross-handed grip to pitch his way up to the 17th green and he gets just the right amount of backspin to stop it three feet from the hole.

    Surely another birdie incoming...

Scottie Scheffler's relentless quality continues over at 14.

He's given himself another look at birdie, this time from about 13-and-a-half feet.

Good pace, but it strokes by the cup. A chance goes.

But you just know he'll get another one.

    BBC Radio 5 Live

More from Chris Gotterup who only secured his place at Royal Portrush by winning at Renaissance last week:

"Monday and Tuesday this week were pretty tough!

"I hadn’t slept much and was really pretty worn down so I took those two days to come over here, check in, play nine holes.

"Other than that, I got rested up and ready for this week because I know it’s a big week.

"My celebration was really shortlived. I was right into this week and I will save the celebrating for when I get home."

Winner of last week's Scottish Open, Chris Gotterup, is five under for the tournament after two rounds and has been speaking to Andy Stevenson:

"It was a great day today. I hung in there well and battled the conditions. I didn’t have my best stuff but definitely came out with a bit better ball-striking.”

Where does this ability to play links golf come from? “I don’t know. Everyone keeps asking me that and I don’t have an answer. It’s just the creativity that the course demands.

"You have to hit certain shots with the wind and I like to move the ball so it gives me a bit of creativity of using slopes and using the wind to your favour.

"It seems there’s always something you can do to get a look, whether it’s 30 feet or 10 feet, there’s something there, so that’s a nice feeling."

An entirely predictable result after that wondrous tee shot from Scottie Scheffler.

Confident putting stroke and birdie duly delivered.

He's one back of Matt Fitzpatrick.

McIlroy needs '100% conviction to give himself a chance' at The Open

Earlier, Rory McIlroy spoke to BBC Sport's Rishi Persad about his chances over the weekend after a 69 left him at three under for the tournament.

He says he'll need "100% conviction" to challenge - he could also do with Matt Fitzpatrick and Scottie Scheffler slowing down.

  14. Morikawa 'struggling with his game - full stop'published at 18:58 BST 18 July

Former European Tour winner on 5 Live

Morikawa is struggling with his game, full stop.

'Your caddie’s not right, your caddie’s picking the wrong club, telling you the wrong wind and nothing’s going right'.

Morikawa is going to be looking for his fifth caddie in four weeks.

But players go through spells like that from time to time.

    He’ll come out of it.

  15. Postpublished at 18:58 BST 18 July

    Morikawa +7 (12)

Playing alongside Scottie Scheffler and Shane Lowry, there is a rare moment of joy for Collin Morikawa at the 12th as he finds a birdie.

The 2021 champion is going to miss the weekend and has looked really out of sorts this week.

  16. Fitzpatrick stays in frontpublished at 18:58 BST 18 July

    Fitzpatrick -9 (15)

Matt Fitzpatrick maintains his one-shot lead with a comfortable two-putt par on the 15th.

Next up is the tricky par-three 16th, which Ken Brown can tell us all about...

  17. Par for Schefflerpublished at 18:57 BST 18 July

    Lowry -1, Morikawa +8, Scheffler -7 (12)

That felt clumsy from the world number one who is usually so deft around the greens.

He's left himself 10 feet for birdie and can't convert so he'll stay two back.

    Par too for Shane Lowry.

  18. Three birdies in a row for Schauffelepublished at 18:56 BST 18 July

    Rahm -1, Schauffele -2, Spaun -2 (13)

Ever since I suggested Xander Schauffele might be in danger of missing the cut after a double bogey on the 10th followed by a wayward tee shot on 11, he's played almost flawless golf from then on.

Maybe that was the moment of inspiration the defending champion needed? I'll claim it.

  19. Bogey at 17th for Jordanpublished at 18:53 BST 18 July

    Jordan -2 (17)

A frustrating bogey on the penultimate hole of the round for Matthew Jordan.

He lost his ball off the tee and took a penalty. In the end, he rolls in an eight-foot downhill putt to rescue what could've been a disastrous hole.

One hole left on a very up and down day for the man from the Wirral.
