  1. Birdie finish for Schefflerpublished at 20:15 British Summer Time 18 July

    Scheffler -1, Spieth E, Young +2 (17)

It's a nice shot in from Jordan Spieth to about 20 feet, but it's nothing in comparison to where Scottie Scheffler ends up, even with a lucky break, as his ball settles about a foot away and he'll end with a birdie.

His approach cleared the bunker but got a helping bounce forward and right towards the hole - the world number one doesn't need luck but he'll take it.

And after what look largely like a struggle all day, Scheffler finishes one under par and just four shots off the lead.

Spieth finishes with a par and a level-par round of 71.

    Scheffler E, Spieth E, Young +2 (17)

Scottie Scheffler gets those dancing feet moving for one last tee shot up the 18th, with a driving iron punching his ball 263 yards down onto the fairway, leaving just under 200 to go.

Jordan Spieth is just a couple of yards closer after a similar effort.

    Brown -4 (13)

Speaking of Dan Brown, his 20-footer for birdie on 13 fails to drop and he remains four under, one off Shane Lowry's lead.

  4. Lowry sets the pacepublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fitzpatrick -1, Lowry -5, Smith +10 (F)

Shane Lowry pops in the birdie putt on the 18th and signs for a bogey-free round of 66 to lead on five under par.

Magnificent stuff. Only Dan Brown could now deny him the overnight lead, you would think.

England's former US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick finishes with a creditable one-under par 70, but it's a day to forget for Cam Smith, who finishes with a flourish on the last but ends nine over.

  5. Spieth hands one right backpublished at 20:06 British Summer Time 18 July

    Scheffler E, Spieth E, Young +2 (17)

You're never sitting comfortably if you're following Jordan Spieth - as he drops a shot on 17 after a wide tee shot on the long par three.

He burns the edge with his par attempt from 18 feet or so and after that incredible eagle on the last he hands one right back.

World number one Scottie Scheffler does exactly the same as well with a bogey dropping him back to level par, where he seems destined to end the day.

    Fitzpatrick -1, Lowry -4, Smith +10 (17)

What a sensational approach to 18 for Shane Lowry!

He's within five feet, with a putt to come for a 66 and the outright lead.

Huge applause as he makes his way up the final fairway.

  7. What next for Tiger?published at 20:02 British Summer Time 18 July

    Woods +8 (79)

Where does Tiger Woods go from here? It's a real conundrum as that was a pretty tough watch at times today and it can be sad watching one of the greatest of all time struggling so badly.

There's a hint of good stuff in there, but he's just not sharp enough and his physical condition means he can't practice or play enough to get that sharpness without his body just breaking down on him.

So does he keep turning up in the majors, scrapping around to make the cut, or just call it a day? He's the ultimate competitor so you get the sense he'll have to be dragged kicking and screaming off the course, but would would you do?

Thumbs up for keep going or thumbs down for call it a day - and send us your comments via the usual method: X: #bbcgolf, text 81111 (standard rates apply), WhatsApp 03301231826.

    Brown -4 (13)

His tee shot on 13 goes more than 320 yards and is in prime position in the middle of the fairway.

  10. 'Unusual to see Fitzpatrick miss those putts'published at 19:56 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fitzpatrick -1 (17)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Very unusual to see Fitzy miss those putts - it looks like he tried to take the break out of it and hit it a bit too hard and caught the side.

Simple three but he will be really disappointed not to to have made a two.

  11. 'Tiger loves being inside the ropes'published at 19:54 British Summer Time 18 July

    Woods +8 (79)

    Dan Rapaport
American golf journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

It’s not like other great players haven’t gotten old. Jack Nicklaus - I can think of highlights where he’s hitting drivers off the deck because he couldn’t hit it far enough.

Golf is one of those weird sports where you don’t retire. It’s not like you need a roster spot. As long as you’re exempt from tournaments it is up to you whether you want to play, and I still believe that Tiger loves competing so much that even this - playing badly - I think he loves being inside the ropes than outside. I think he loves being in the mix.

    Fitzpatrick -1, Lowry -4, Smith +10 (17)

Shane Lowry's birdie putt doesn't drop, another par - six in a row now for the 2019 champ.

Matt Fitzpatrick should have made a birdie, but his birdie try from six feet slides outside right.

  13. Woods ends with a whimperpublished at 19:53 British Summer Time 18 July

It's a disappointing finish for Tiger Woods on a disappointing day as he makes a bogey on 18 to end his opening round on eight over and facing an uphill battle to make the weekend.

He gets a great reception from the fans but after a decent start that all got away from him and was at times tough to watch. And he's now got to go through his intensive physio routine to be ready to go tomorrow!

  14. Eagle for Spieth!published at 19:50 British Summer Time 18 July

    Scheffler -1, Spieth -1, Young +2 (16)

    Jordan SpiethImage source, Getty Images

Of course Jordan Spieth rolls in that 16-footer for make an eagle three on the 16th - he loves the spectacular and that stunning second shot got exactly what it deserved he sends it home.

Scottie Scheffler is closer, but he can't match the eagle as he just misses with that block of ice he's wielding as his putter today.

Birdie will have to do for the world number one.

  15. Postpublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 18 July

    Brown -4 (12)

It's a safe par for Dan Brown on 12. Still no bogeys on his card.

  16. Warm welcome for Woodspublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 18 July

    Cantlay +2, Schauffele -2, Woods +7 (17)

Tiger Woods gets a huge ovation as he walks up onto the 18th green.

Yes his game is way below where it was and, yes, he's limping around these days and not striding or prowling like the Tiger of old, but he's arguably the best to ever play the game and still a huge draw for the crowd.

  17. Postpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 18 July

    Brown -4 (11); Lowry -4 (16)

Dan Brown has another chance on 12 from 25 feet for a birdie and the outright lead, although up ahead Shane Lowry has a 12-footer for a birdie on 17...

  18. Eagle chancespublished at 19:44 British Summer Time 18 July

    Scheffler E, Spieth +1, Young +2 (15)

Scottie Scheffler has an almighty dig at the green on the par-five 16th from 296 yards, and he's hit a ripper than bounds onto the putting surface and rolls up to 10 feet.

Jordan Spieth has hit his second shot 305 yards, yes that's 305 yards! He's left himself 16 feet for an eagle.

  19. 'Dan Brown has turned himself into a super player'published at 19:43 British Summer Time 18 July

    Brown -4 (11)

BBC Radio 5 Live's James Gregg has been talking about the rise of Dan Brown, from juniors to being the joint leader of day one of The Open:

"We had a great Yorkshire junior side. We had Matt Fitzpatrick, Joe Dean and a whole host of other players who were streets ahead of where Dan was and if you told me that Dan Brown was going to end up a European Tour winner playing in major championships and establishing himself fully on the DP World Tour, without being unkind to Dan, I would have probably laughed at you.

"It really is testament of how hard he has worked and really stuck at it.

"To give you a bit of context, Matt Fitzpatrick won the US Amateur Championship in 2013, was the world number one and by the time Dan had turned pro, Fitzy had already won on the DP World Tour and Dan was still playing on the third tier of European golf.

"So he’s done really well. We played a little foursomes and I may or may not have let him down a couple of times, and he may or may not have got cross with me!

"I am really pleased that’s he's managed to kick on because he really talked a good game but he knew he was miles behind.

"He’s turned himself into a super player, and look at him. He’s got his name in lights on the Open leaderboard."

  20. Bogey at 17published at 19:40 British Summer Time 18 July

    Cantlay +2, Schauffele -2, Woods +7 (17)

A duffed chip off the back of 17 and a bombed par putt that rattled the back of the cup but never stood a chance of dropping means it's another bogey for Tiger Woods with just one to go.
