  1. 'Rory sets out intentions'published at 15:02 British Summer Time 19 July

    McIlroy -5, Smith -2 (2)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

He's set the gauntlet down here, he's set out his intentions.

We said he needs to be about three under today by the fifth, and he's well on his way to doing that.

  2. 'Excitement building around Rory'published at 15:01 British Summer Time 19 July

    Matt Gault
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

The big mounds beyond the second green gave everyone a good look at that putt.

Not to be but another birdie is greeted with a roar.

You can feel the excitement building now and this has the making to be a great day.

  3. Hit it Rory!published at 15:00 British Summer Time 19 July

    McIlroy -5, Smith -2 (2)

Oh Rory McIlroy, hit it! McIlroy's got his hands on his knees as he gives that eagle try a great roll, but maybe just a couple of rolls short as it pulls up just a few inches short of landing the big bird.

The crowd tried willing that one home but it just ran out of juice. Still, it's two birdies in two holes and the McIlroy charge is officially ON!

  4. Triple bogey for Lowrypublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 19 July

    Lowry +2, Rahm -1 (14)

It's not Shane Lowry's week is it? After that penalty incident yesterday (we've got an update on that coming) he's now made a triple-bogey seven on the 14th.

Him and Jon Rahm were already prowling around like two grumpy, angry grizzly bears at Royal Portrush and that mood will not get any better after that.

You'd make a fortune following this group around with a swear jar...

  5. Henley on the marchpublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 19 July

    Henley -4 (11)

Russell Henley is quietly chipping away at the lead.

He's just found his fifth birdie of the day at the 11th, taking him to four under on the day and in the Championship.

That's a share of 10th as it stands for the American.

  6. Rory with a ripperpublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 19 July

    McIlroy -4, Smith -3 (1)

Only the second hole, but Portrush is getting excited as Rory McIlroy smashed a drive away 314 yards - not quite on the fairway but only just off it and not bad at all.

He then rips a three iron from 262 yards out and it gets a nice bounce onto the green to leave a 30 footer for eagle.

Imagine the noise if he makes that!

  7. This happened earlier...published at 14:51 British Summer Time 19 July

    Parry -4 (17)

Englishman John Parry produced a moment of magic on the par-three 13th earlier - the first ace of the 2025 Open.

He's bogey-free for his round heading down the last. He'll be round in 66 if he can par the 18th.

  8. 'Rory tries to calm himself'published at 14:51 British Summer Time 19 July

    McIlroy -4, Smith -3 (1)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Rory was taking a deep breath and taking it all in, trying to calm his heart rate down and talking to his caddy while Jordan Smith finished off his hole.

  9. Open stat attackpublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 19 July

    Open ChampionshipImage source, Getty Images

Before starting his third round, Rory McIlroy had hit the fewest fairways of anyone to make the cut. His success rate of 32.1% over the first two days ranked him 150th in the field

Cue hitting the fairway on the first today.

Interestingly, the person to hit the second-fewest fairways of anyone to make the cut is leader Scottie Scheffler. He’s managed to do so just 39.3% of the time, ranking him 137th in the field ahead of starting his next round.

But a warning for the field - Scheffler’s approach play has been as peerless as ever, ranking second for SG approach (+6.81) BUT he’s also first for SG putting (+6.39).

Can anyone stop him if he putts well today?

  10. See you in New Yorkpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 19 July

    Faith Harper
BBC Sport NI at Royal Portrush

There's been a lot of talk about US Ryder Cup captain, Keegan Bradley this week.

He was on the range just beside Rory, who has a very nice Team Europe club cover to show off.

Just a little reminder that we're getting closer and closer to what should be an epic battle at Bethpage.

Absolutely amazing. Unbelievable scenes at this first hole. He got the line off Jordan Smith and he's putted with perfection.

Rory reflects on his Royal Portrush record

Rory McIlroy could do with a low one today, and he's made a great start. He's also gone low, very low, here before.

He shot 65 on Friday here in 2019 but just missed the cut and going back even further he shot 61, breaking the course record at Royal Portrush, as a 16 year old.

  13. Roars for Rorypublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 19 July

    McIlroy -4 (1)

    Peter Scrivener
BBC Sport senior journalist at Royal Portrush

I've ambled back into the media tent to grab a bite to eat before the action really kicks in.

    Big mistake.

A huge roar pierces through the tarpaulin roof - and we are about 500 yards from the green. It grabs the attention of every soul in here.

I was lucky enough to be at Augusta National in 2019 when Tiger Woods won the Masters. The cheers there were big. They were nothing on that.

  14. Perfect birdie start!published at 14:43 British Summer Time 19 July

    McIlroy -4, Smith -3 (1)

An early Rory roar at Royal Portrush as McIlroy lands a huge curling putt from over 30 feet away up and over a huge hill in the first green - tracking all the way but maybe curling too much before it straightens up and dives into the hole.

Cue a huge outburst of noise from the fans and plenty of "come on Rory" as he strides off to the second.

    Perfect start.

  15. Rose starts wellpublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 19 July

    Rose -3 (3)

Another man making back-to-back birdies is Justin Rose.

The Masters runner-up, who also finished second at last year's Open, bogeyed the first but has bounced back on the second and third.

  16. Birdies for Abergpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 19 July

    Aberg -4 (3)

Ludvig Aberg has made back-to-back birdies at the second and third to improve to four under.

Just a second Open Championship for the young Swede this and you have to keep reminding yourself of that fact as he's made just an astonishing impact in the pro game.

He famously became the first man ever to play in the Ryder Cup before taking part in a single major championship, and handled it brilliantly. Some player.

  17. Watch Fleetwood's eagle on the secondpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 19 July

    Fleetwood -3 (6)

An eagle on the second for Fleetwood

England's Tommy Fleetwood bogeyed his first hole today but bounced back brilliantly with an eagle at the second.

Fleetwood, the runner-up at Portrush in 2019, followed that with a birdie on six to be two under for his round at the moment.

  19. Rory finds a fairway!published at 14:36 British Summer Time 19 July

    McIlroy -3, Smith -3

Rory McIlroy hit just nine out of 28 fairways in the opening two rounds, that's the worst record of any player still left in the Open Championship - but he's found one already today.

A much better tee shot off the first sees him find the left half of the fairway as he gets into double figures for the week for fairways hit - could be a good omen for today?

  20. Postpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 19 July

    McIlroy -3, Smith -3 (14:30 BST)

    Matt Gault
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

Once again, the first hole is abuzz with Rory fever.

In truth, it may not be quite as busy as Thursday and Friday, but he's still the biggest draw out here at the moment. He has to be thinking 64.

A big afternoon in store for Englishman Jordan Smith, too. He's been on the scene for a good while though and will definitely relish this.
