  1. Eagle - hear the roar!published at 17:25 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -7 (12)

Rory McIlroy are you kidding me? He's landed a monster from miles away on the 12th green to make an eagle, and Royal Portrush has just erupted.

  2. Tidy round from Gloverpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time

    Glover -4 (68)

A nice round from Lucas Glover has just come to a close.

A three-under-par 68 with four birdies for the 45-year-old and the American reaches the clubhouse on a tidy four under.

  3. Postpublished at 17:21 British Summer Time

    Hatton -8, R Hojgaard -5 (9)

Tyrrell Hatton is oh so close to another birdie on the ninth but his 25-foot putt is just short of the cup.

A bogey-free 33 on the front nine for Tyrrell.

  4. Postpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time

    Fleetwood -3 (69)

At the final hole, England's Tommy Fleetwood is closing his round.

Two bogeys on the back nine derailed his progress as at one stage he'd reached five under par.

Instead, he signs off at three under.

He'll have to go some tomorrow if he's to get anywhere near matching his second place from last time at Portrush.

  5. Eagle for Scheffler!published at 17:15 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -12, Fitzpatrick -11 (7)

Scottie Scheffler started with six pars, but he can add an eagle three to his card on the seventh. No mistake from 10 feet.

Matt Fitzpatrick follows the world number one in for birdie, but the Englishman loses his share of the lead.

  6. Postpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -6 (10)

    Matt Gault
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

    Suddenly the energy changes

As soon as McIlroy stuck his right arm out, the murmurs started.

It's a different story elsewhere. The cheers from other parts of the course are getting louder and louder.

In other news, there's a spectator restaurant off the left of the 11th. The chips smell sensational.

  7. 'Unfortunate mishap for Rory'published at 17:14 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -5, Smith -2 (11)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

He hasn't hit a wrong ball in any way, he couldn't see the ball but it's just unfortunate because it took away the strike from the shot he was hitting.

  8. Fitzpatrick's fine startpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time

    Fitzpatrick -10 (6)

'Perfect chip' - Fitzpatrick with an eagle on the second hole

Matt Fitzpatrick recovered very quickly from missing a short par putt at the first... by popping in this chip for eagle on the par-five second.

It put the Englishman into a share of the lead, where he's stayed ever since.

  9. Postpublished at 17:12 British Summer Time

    Hatton -8 (8)

Tyrrell Hatton finds a fairway bunker from the ninth tee but he's lying well enough and close enough to the green that he can have a stab at the flag.

Probably 25 feet left for the Englishman, who is three under for his round today.

  10. Bogey for McIlroypublished at 17:12 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -5 (11)

Well that's let a bit of air out of the tyres..

A first bogey in 24 holes for Rory McIlroy and it actually comes after he got a stroke of luck by getting a decent spot from that wayward drive.

Hitting that buried second golf ball was a distraction, but he should've done better with a chip from just short of the green than 20 feet, which he then couldn't convert to save par.

  11. Postpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -10, Fitzpatrick -10 (6)

A 382-yard drive from Scottie Scheffler puts him in position A on the par-five seventh, which has yielded a few eagles already today.

Matt Fitzpatrick, from about 30 yards further back, plays first and his ball lands in the hollow towards the front of the green.

Scheffler strikes - he likes it - magnificent. About 10 feet left for an eagle three.

  12. Missed chancepublished at 17:08 British Summer Time

    Harman -6, Li -9 (7)

Li Haotong smoked his drive 356 yards on the seventh and then after a long iron and a chip has a birdie putt of six feet to join the leaders on 10 under - but he's missed it!

You don't get too many chances as good as that, so that's a big miss.

  13. Postpublished at 17:05 British Summer Time

    Hatton -8, R Hojgaard -5 (8)

Tyrrell Hatton produces another great lag putt from long range to secure a two-putt par and remain two off the lead.

  14. Well I never...published at 17:04 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -6 (10)

First big miss off the tee today for Rory McIlroy as he carves one miles right of the 11th fairway - but finds himself a nice gap in the rough in a clear area trampled down by the fans.

He hits a gap wedge just short of the green, but that's only half the story as in his follow through his club hits the Portrush turf and uncovers a golf ball buried in the soil!

It pops up and surprised an amused McIlroy, who can only chuckle as he wonders how on earth that's happened.

Not sure I've seen that before - you don't get a penalty for hitting two balls there do you?

  15. 'Scheffler and Fitzpatrick will be building confidence'published at 17:03 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -10, Fitzpatrick -10 (6)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

When you go out as a leader it’s always tricky to get the putts in and stretch it out because you know everyone’s coming after you and you know what position you’re in.

These guys are more than used to it and they’ll be just trying to get a little bit of momentum, build a little bit of confidence and Scheffler and Fitzpatrick will be in good shape.

What a shirt by the way - terrific hexagon action.

Give this post a thumb if you're a fan of everyone's favourite tessellating shape.

  17. Wallace finishes up at -5published at 17:01 British Summer Time

    Wallace -5 (66)

We got excited about Matt Wallace about an hour ago - and with good reason in that he was five under for his day with six to play.

Well he's just wrapped up at 18 and that's where he stayed. Steady final third from the Englishman and he's one off the clubhouse lead currently held by Russell Henley at -6.

  18. Postpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -10, Fitzpatrick -10 (6)

Two birdie chances on the sixth, two go begging.

    Pars for the co-leaders.

  19. 'Stuck in neutral'published at 16:57 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -6 (10)

    Matt Gault
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

McIlroy's just stuck in neutral a bit. His body language is getting increasingly agitated, but he still has plenty of chances on the horizon.

There's so many people out here and it's almost impossible for the marshals to stop them straying beyond the ropes, which is what has just happened between the ninth and 10th fairways.

  20. 'Rory aware of leaderboard'published at 16:57 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -6, Smith -2 (10)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

One thing I noticed before that putt on the 10th was McIlroy looking for the leaderboard.

Some players say they don't like looking at it, but he strode up the green and the first thing he looked for was the leaderboard.
