Look at those clouds over Oakmont!

  2. Best US Open finishes by British playerspublished at 20:52 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hatton +1 (8)

Since 2000, two British players have won the US Open and a number of others have gone close.

Which of those groups will Tyrrell Hatton sit in later?

    • 2013 - Merion,Justin Rose, won
    • 2022 - The Country Club, Matt Fitzpatrick, won
    • 2018 - Shinnecock Hills, Tommy Fleetwood, second

  3. Oh Scottie!published at 20:51 British Summer Time 15 June

    Scheffler +5 (11)

Scottie Scheffler's race is surely run now, and it will surprise absolutely nobody to learn it's his putter that has cost him again.

He's missed chance after chance but on 11 surely he'll make this eight footer for a birdie? But no, he misses it yet again, and this time just for good measure he misses the tiddler coming back so actually ends up with a bogey!

So that's a three-putt from eight feet including a miss from two feet - his second missed two-footer of the week - in a real shoddy effort on the greens from the world number one.

  4. Brilliant Bobpublished at 20:51 British Summer Time 15 June

    MacIntyre +3 (9)

Some recovery that. Bob MacIntyre sends his tee shot so far right on the ninth that it ends up on the 10th fairway.

He then zings an iron in to under four feet to rolls in a birdie putt. Sensational. Brilliant. I'm actually lost for superlatives.

  5. Oakmont 'a massive challenge but fair' - Canterpublished at 20:49 British Summer Time 15 June

    Canter +15 (77)

    Laurie CanterImage source, Getty Images

England's Laurie Canter joined the coverage on 5 Live Sports Extra after carding a final-round 77 to finish the tournament at 15 over and offered his view on how Oakmont is playing.

"It's playing softer. A lot of the slopes you want to use you're not able to because the ball is stopping.

"We've prepared to use these slopes and get the ball feeding into the pins, but with the greens so soft, you're going to see the ball stop. It's still a massive challenge.

"I think we'll have a world-class winner at the end of the day. If I had to play a couple of seasons of playing golf just like this, I think that would be it for me. I don't think it [Oakmont] is unfair. It's on the edge speed-wise on the greens.

"The fact it's slowed down now, it's really fair. You can hold the fairways and it's going to reward the guys playing great golf tee to green."

  6. Steady par for Hattonpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hatton +1, Ortiz +2 (8)

Hatton does well to save par on the seventh and it's on to the brutally long par-three eighth.

He bashes one to the right edge of the green. It's 60 feet away, but he produces a stunning lag putt and that's a stress-free par on one of the most intimidating holes out there.

    The Englishman remains three back.

  7. Burns back in frontpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 15 June

    Burns -2, Scott -1 (6)

Sloppy from Adam Scott, perhaps not quite the right club choice at the par three but he's still only 40 feet away so he should really be getting down in two there, but his first effort is not good enough and leaves him eight feet that he fails to convert.

A par for Sam Burns means he goes back into the outright lead again thanks to the Australian's slip.

  8. Spaun's struggles continuepublished at 20:42 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hovland E, Spaun +2 (6)

How did that not drop? Viktor Hovland ball looks destined for the heart of the cup on the sixth green but somehow travels right over the left lipt and stays up.

That would have been back-to-back birdies for the Norwegian, who unlike his playing partner looks to have got over his earlier troubles.

JJ Spaun finds the front bunker off the tee and then watches his 11-foot par attempt shaves the same side of the cup for a fifth bogey in six holes.

  9. Another lip-out!published at 20:38 British Summer Time 15 June

    Scheffler +4 (10)

After catching the lip on the ninth Scottie Scheffler has suffered another lip-out on the 10th as he misses yet another birdie attempt. Yes, he should putt better, but two of those in a row is pretty harsh.

Scheffler can't quite believe his bad luck as he shakes his head walking off the green - he'd have been right in the thick of things had those last two putts dropped.

  10. Postpublished at 20:34 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hatton +1, Ortiz +2 (6)

Tyrrell Hatton finds yet another fairway, this time down the 496-yard par-four seventh.

But he won't like that at all - he comes up woefully short with his approach from 170 yards and he'll have his work cut out to remain at one over.

He begins his post-shot deliberations with his caddie. We'll leave them to it for now.

  11. We're tied at the top!published at 20:34 British Summer Time 15 June

    Burns -2, Scott -2 (5)

    US OpenImage source, Getty Images

Sam Burns doesn't manage to save his par so when Adam Scott rattles in his own par putt from five feet then the Australian moves into a tie for the lead with the American.

Where's your money going now between these two?

  12. Burns in botherpublished at 20:29 British Summer Time 15 June

    Burns -3, Scott -2 (4)

Bunker for Sam Burns off the fifth tee, and all he can do is flop it out and try and knock it close with his third.

He doesn't though as he's well short, around 30 feet, so he's got plenty of work to do to try and save his par here.

  13. Xander's top 15 looks out of reachpublished at 20:28 British Summer Time 15 June

    Schauffele +6 (69)

    Xander SchauffeleImage source, Getty Images

At one point earlier, Xander Schauffele looked like he was heading for a back door top 10 when he was at three under for his round.

However two dropped shots, sent him back to six over, a tie for 19th and the end of a long streak.

The Californian has always finished in the top 15 in the US Open since his debut in 2017, but unless plenty above him unravel, he will not be managing that this time.

  14. Trading placespublished at 20:27 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hovland E, Spaun +1 (5)

Viktor Hovland gives the fans a little wave as he purposefully strides off the fifth green having drained his short-range birdie putt.

It's a fourth bogey in five holes for JJ Spaun who is struggling badly and can't drop in a par putt from 10 feet.

That means the playing partners go through a bit of a Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy moment, trading places on the leaderboard.

  15. Frustration for Schefflerpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 15 June

    Scheffler +4 (9)

It's deja vu all over again for Scottie Scheffler as he finds the green in regulation but can't convert a 13-foot birdie putt on the ninth to end a frustrating first half of his round.

But for that one double bogey he'd be in decent shape - if he could find a few putts to drop then he'd be in even better shape!

  16. Hatton leaves it shortpublished at 20:23 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hatton +1, Ortiz +2 (6)

Tyrrell Hatton hits a beauty into the par-three sixth and has a 13-foot putt for a birdie to get back to even.

Ohhh, he leaves it in the jaws!

He's exasperated right now but no damage done and he's still right in this.

  17. How did that miss!?published at 20:19 British Summer Time 15 June

    Burns -3, Scott -2 (4)

Adam Scott takes the long putter to hit off the fringe instead of playing a tough chip shot, and he almost holes the thing from the complete opposite end of the green.

It's 46 feet the Australian has to traverse for what would be an eagle on the par five, but despite the ball tracking all the way it just ducks off line right at the death.

Still, it's a birdie for Scott to get him back on track and cut the gap to one again.

  18. Postpublished at 20:19 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hovland +1, Spaun E (4)

What. A. Shot. Viktor Hovland has made more birdies than anyone this week with 13 plus an eagle and he'll have a chance for number 14 at the fith.

He lands a stunning wedge shot out of the sand into around five feet and gets a huge roar of approval from then Oakmont fans.

  19. First birdie of the day on 8published at 20:18 British Summer Time 15 June

    Gotterup +4 (8)

Just as the clock ticked towards 24 hours since the eighth last gave up a birdie, we see America's Chris Gotterup nailing a huge birdie putt from across the green.

Did we mention it was 301 yards and the longest par-three in history?

And that we've got a great feature on it?

You can read it over here.

  20. Young going backwardspublished at 20:16 British Summer Time 15 June

    Young +3 (7)

Cameron Young is just hitting reverse gear now after finding the sand on the sixth and not being able to make the save he's back at three over.

He made a fast start with those two early birdies but it's turned out to be a false start after successive bogeys have cancelled them out.
