Tyrrell Hatton, speaking after finishing with back-to-back bogeys to end up in a tie for fourth:

"It was a pretty tough day. I feel like for the most part I played pretty well, although I did struggle a bit on the restart with missing a few shots right.

"I feel like I managed that well and then the finish hurts a lot. If you're going to miss the 17th with that pin, you miss it right. I feel like I did my bit and then was extremely unlucky for it to finish where it did.

"What happened on 17 will hurt for a long time. It's the first time I've been in contention in a major and that was exciting and unfortunately through bad luck I had momentum taken away from me and ultimately it wasn't my day."

    Why was it bad luck?

"Why was it bad luck? Why do you think it was bad luck? What kind of question is that?"

What made it bad luck do you think?

"You think stopping on the downslope in the rough, like that's ridiculous. Like I said, you have to miss it right on the bunker. I feel like I've missed it in the right spot and got punished which ultimately I don't think ends up being fair."

More from US Open champion JJ Spaun, speaking at the trophy presentation: "I never thought I would be here holding this trophy. I've always had aspirations and dreams but a few months ago I didn't know what my ceiling was and how good I could be, but I am just proud.

"I have been resilient in my career and pushed through a lot of things and tried to be the best golfer I could be. I was happy to display that today at Oakmont.

"It was a dream weekend scenario on Father's Day, to have my two kids here is awesome and a cherry on top of a wonderful weekend."

Scotland's Bob MacIntyre, speaking before JJ Spaun finished his round:

"I didn't get off to the best of starts, was two over through three, and holed a lovely putt for eagle on four. That settled me down and got me into a groove and back into the golf tournament.

"That back nine was all about fighting. We had the rain delay. My previous rain delay comebacks have not been strong, but I said, 'why not be me today?' when I was going around."

When he started to believe he had a chance:

"When I was walking up 12 and saw on the leaderboard that the leader was even par. I was three over at the time. All week I've said level par. In my head I was looking for four even pars. I almost got there, not quite. I always believed I could challenge, but the start didn't help."

And what a winning moment it was - have you ever seen a putt landed like this to clinch a major championship?

    Just incredible from JJ Spaun.

  5. Weather delay 'changed the whole vibe'published at 01:42 British Summer Time

New US Open champion JJ Spaun, speaking at the trophy presentation: "I don't think I did keep my composure (after unfortunate start) honestly with all the breaks I was getting.

"I was trying to just dig deep, hit some good shots coming in. The weather delay we had kind of changed the whole vibe for the day. A similar thing happened to me at the Players and I kind of leaned on that whole experience. I came back and kept pushing and bounced back and fought really hard on the back nine.

"It was nice to get a teach from Viktor, when I hit it [the winning putt] I thought it was a little short but it was right on the line. It was looking really good and it was one of those moments in major championships where that's kind of what happens to seal the deal and I'm fortunate it was my time."

  6. What does JJ Spaun get for winning the US Open?published at 01:32 British Summer Time

Well, he gets the US Open trophy of course, as well as the Jack NIcklaus medal that winners proudly hang around their necks.

What's more, Spaun will pocket a massive $4.2m first prize and even better he gets a 10-year exemption into the US Open and also a free pass into the next five editions of the Open, US PGA Championship and The Masters.

Finally, along with a bunch of world ranking points he'll also get a big haul of Ryder Cup points, which will go a long way to securing an automatic spot in Keegan Bradley's USA team for Bethpage Black this autumn.

    Quite a few bonuses there!

  7. Spaun's superb back ninepublished at 01:26 British Summer Time

    Spaun wins US Open

You've got to hit fairways and make putts to win any major championship. And when it comes to excelling with the flat stick, nobody has been better than JJ Spaun this week really.

Total feet of putts made this week:

    • JJ Spaun - 401.5 feet
    • Robert MacIntyre - 399.8 feet
    • Matt Fitzpatrick - 395.3 feet

That final nine holes was something else from the American and it is actually the best back nine (32 strokes) to win a US Open at Oakmont since Johnny Miller managed to do it in 31 strokes in 1973.

  8. Another first time winnerpublished at 01:25 British Summer Time

The US Open has been the best of golf's big four events for supplying first-time major champions, as JJ Spaun is now the 18th man to win his maiden major at the US Open this century.

That's the best record of the four men's majors for producing debut champions - in what's the toughest test in golf, it seems that newcomers can rise to the challenge.

  10. Final pair finish off horror roundspublished at 01:18 British Summer Time

    Burns +4, Scott +5 (F)

Huge disappointment for these two who went out last today hoping to win the US Open but both endured horror final rounds at Oakmont

Sam Burns shot 78 and Adam Scott 79 - you'd never have believed the the final pair would shoot a combined 17 over par in the final round, just astonishing.

That's what a tough course like this, a tough event like this, and the pressure of being in the final group can do to you.

    Richard Winton
    BBC Sport Scotland

    Ach, Bob…

Realistically, MacIntyre shouldn’t even have been in the conversation given how far back he was. But in the end it took an obscene JJ Spaun putt to put down the man from Oban.

The Scot will take plenty from that. Others lost their shape on the back nine but he showed the resolve that might just one day lead to him lifting one of these majors.

  12. MacIntyre applauds Spaunpublished at 01:15 British Summer Time

    Spaun wins the US Open

A bit of class from Bob MacIntyre there.

Watching on the TV, the Scot applauds JJ Spaun's stunning birdie putt, lets out a 'wow' and extends his arms as if to say, 'what can you do about that?'

The US Open belongs to Spaun, but this will be a huge week for MacIntyre moving forward.

  13. Postpublished at 01:15 British Summer Time

    Spaun -1 (72)

What a way to win a US Open.

The stuff of dreams for JJ Spaun, who lost at the Player's Championship in a play-off to Rory McIlroy earlier this season.

    Burns +3, Scott +5 (17)

Sam Burns made a birdie on 17 and the pair now come down 18 just to finish off the final round of the 125th US Open - although rather more subdued after the absolute mayhem of JJ Spaun's winning putt.

    Hovland +2 (73), Spaun -1 (72)

JJ Spaun does a little dance in the rain with his caddie and embraces his wife and daughters at the side of the green.

He has just made the longest putt of the week to win the US Open and now asks one of his girls to be quiet while Viktor Hovland finishes off his par.

    Hovland +2, Spaun -1 (18)

    Here comes JJ Spaun....

He has two putts to win the US Open...he only needs one. He closes the deal with a birdie on the 18th.

    What a finish.

JJ Spaun's wife Melody is at the side of the 18th green.

He has only won once ever on the PGA Tour at the Texas Open three years ago. Now he has two putts from around 65 feet to win obe of golf's biggest prizes.

Viktor Hovland is up first mind.

  19. Postpublished at 01:03 British Summer Time

    Hovland +2, Spaun E (17)

The rain is coming down heavy again as JJ Spaun finds a spot on the left of the 18th green with his six-iron approach.

Two putts will win him the US Open.

Viktor Hovland follows a similar line to his playing partner. His ball is going to end up just outside Spaun's and give him a read.

What a result for the American.

  20. Hatton bogeys last for 72published at 01:00 British Summer Time

Tyrrell Hatton nudges his par putt down the slope on the last, but it's a closing bogey and a two-over round of 72.

Currently in a tie for fourth, it looks like it'll be his best finish in a major, but that will be little consolation to him right now after finishing with back-to-back bogeys.

He played some lovely stuff over the course of the week, though, and he certainly possesses the game to land one of these big ones during his career.
