  1. Mixed fortunespublished at 22:56 British Summer Time 15 June

    Burns -2, Scott E (8)

Sam Burns a bit wild off the ninth tee as he misses the usual rough and ends up in the hay - but he gets so lucky to draw a nice enough lie to be able to hack it out down the fairway, when off the tee he'd have been thinking he was in penalty drop territory.

Adam Scott is even wilder off out to the right, and he's landed on a walkway in a dollop of mud so will get a free drop - but the drop will be in the rough.

    Contrasting fortunes for the leaders.

  2. Hatton in troublepublished at 22:54 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hatton +1, Ortiz +2 (9)

Tyrrell Hatton is in big trouble on 10.

He's sprayed his drive down the right-hand side and is forced to take a penalty drop.

He doesn't like his third but it's on the green, about 30 feet away, so it's a putt for a pat at least.

    This course is absolutely relentless.

  3. Bogey for Hovlandpublished at 22:54 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hovland +2, Spaun +2 (8)

Viktor Hovland hits his right-to-left putt on the heel and it drifts left of the cup. He reaches the turn at three-over par for the day.

No birdie for JJ Spaun but a simple enough par after a well-judged first putt runs up close.

  4. Postpublished at 22:50 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hovland +1, Spaun +2 (8)

Viktor Hovland has been consistent down the ninth this week. Every drive has gone right with two birdies arriving from tee shots that have just held on the fairway and a par coming from the rough.

Well he's in the thicker stuff today and chops his second into a cavernous greenside bunker.

The Norwegian splashes out well but still has work to do with his flatstick to save his par.

JJ Spaun takes a more conventional route to the green and will be putting from 20 feet or so for a birdie.

  5. Scott bogey - Burns leads by twopublished at 22:48 British Summer Time 15 June

    Burns -2, Scott E (8)

Sam Burns gets a relatively simple par on this monster eighth hole, but Adam Scott had a stinker of a lie in this soaking wet rough so had to just bang it out there - it was probably like playing out of a load of thick seaweed.

The ball rolled out and Scott could only two-putt from there for a bogey to hand Burns a two-shot lead.

  6. Scheffler birdiepublished at 22:44 British Summer Time 15 June

    Scheffler +4 (12)

Scottie Scheffler jammed in a beautiful approach shot before we stopped for rain, so he's had a long time to think about the line of his short putt so this time he has no problem rolling it in for a birdie.

He still doesn't look happy, as he knows he probably should only be about one or two over and not four, but with the greens now extra soft he can go on the attack and go flag hunting.

  7. Postpublished at 22:43 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hatton +1 (9)

Those par putts are more important than birdie putts.

    They keep the momentum going.

Tyrrell Hatton played that hole poorly, only hitting one good shot, but that was the putt.

    And that's all that mattered.

  8. Big par save for Hattonpublished at 22:42 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hatton +1, Ortiz +2 (9)

Tyrrell Hatton has been waiting the best part of two hours to play his bunker shot from off the ninth green - but he hasn't lost his rhythm as he splashes it out to six feet.

Big putt. Right to left. He drains it! That could be very important for the Englishman.

Par for Carlos Ortiz, too. Both players still very much in this.

  9. Leader back in actionpublished at 22:41 British Summer Time 15 June

    Burns -2, Scott -1 (7)

How about this for a start after the rain delay? Sam Burns and Adam Scott have to tackle the 301-yard par three as they emerge back out onto the course!

Both bring out the big dogs but both miss the green - Scott wider of the mark than Burns, so for their second shots after the resumption they'll face delicate chips out of sodden wet rough.

    Urgh

Right. We can see players. We can see golf bags. We can see practice swings.

Looks like we're good to go. So a recap...

    -2 Burns

    -1 Scott

    +1 Hovland, Hatton

    +2 Ortiz, Spaun

    +3 MacIntyre

    Let's get into this!

  11. At the other end of the leaderboardpublished at 22:36 British Summer Time 15 June

    Barbaree Jr +24 (82)

While the leaders have been scrambling to save their pars, spare a thought for the other end of the board.

America's Philip Barbaree Junior is propping up the field after a final round 82 left him at +24 for the tournament.

I'm sure it's not just me that mulls over those horrible shots after a round of golf. Philip will have a choice of six bogeys and three doubles to agonise over as he drops off later.

At least he didn't have an hour 40 minute rain delay though.

Some time earlier, it was quite the finish for 2021 champ Jon Rahm who birdied his final three holes to post a clubhouse target at four over par.

At the moment, that's good enough to have him at eighth for the week.

That could keep getting better as well.

    McIlroy +7 (67)

Rory McIlroy knows what he wants and does his own thing. He wears his heart on his sleeve and that's what has made him so endearing.

I hope this will be it and he can let it go but he will probably be more selective about when he speaks.

And it's going to be quite the circus when he comes home for the Open Championship next month.

I think he knows he's going to have to control his emotions as it is going to be tough.

Here is that upbeat exchange with the media a little earlier.

It was a bit drier at Oakmont then.

Rory McIlroy was on good form today.

Yesterday, his interview with the gathered media was difficult. He was a little short - you could tell he didn't really want to be there. It was a tense three or four minutes.

I understand his indifference to some of the reporting because he will probably think he's given a lot of the reporters the greatest story they'll ever report on.

Today it was different. A smaller huddle. Predominantly journalists from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. He was a lot more giving with his time.

It was nice to hear Rory a little more upbeat today.

Something about this picture from Oakmont makes me feel smug.

June in the United States looks just like June round here.

In US Open history, there have been two Monday finishes in which there was not a play-off.

Those were in 2009 at Bethpage Black when Lucas Glover triumphed and in 1983 at Oakmont, when Larry Nelson won.
