  1. McIlroy tees offpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 11 April

    McIlroy E, Aberg -4, Bhatia -1 (14:58 BST)

"Fore left," yells Rory McIlroy as his first drive of day two swings out wide off the tee.

He'll be happy enough when he gets up there though as it's trundled into the first cut, rather than threatening the pine straw.

  2. Rory warms up on the rangepublished at 14:59 British Summer Time 11 April

    Stephen Watson
BBC Sport Northern Ireland at Augusta National

Rory McIlroy is going to have to produce a special second round today to get back into contention. History is not on his side as only two players have won the Masters from seven shots back. Sun is now shining at Augusta, with a slight breeze.

  3. 'Good lay-up'published at 14:58 British Summer Time 11 April

    Rose -8 (3)

Justin Rose can see the funny side as he comes up about 50 yards short of the green on the 223-yard par-three fourth hole.

Using a fairway metal, he obviously caught that really high on the club face and the ball has ballooned up into the air and dropped miles short. Pretty comical but he has work to do for par now.

  4. 'I enjoy the test' - Abergpublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 11 April

    Aberg -4 (14:58 BST)

We've seen some winners on their second Masters appearance in recent times - step forward Charl Schwartzel, Jordan Spieth and Danny Willett.

Well, Ludvig Aberg could join that crew this week.

After all, he did come second on debut last year and is up there once again - some supreme driving helping him up to four under par and in striking distance.

"It's a test of golf that I really enjoy - it demands a lot of patience," he said. "You can't really force it.

"I felt like I like that type of golf. I enjoy that challenge."

The Golden Oldies were rolling back the years yesterday.

We saw 67-year-old Bernhard Langer wearing a retro-inspired fit in his final Masters and 65-year-old Fred Couples holing out from 191 yards for an eagle.

Jose Maria Olazabal, another former champion, is a relative spring chicken at 59.

But the Spaniard has a whiff of nostalgia after making an early move.

A birdie on the third leaves him one under today, joining seven others who are already in the red.

  6. McIlroy was weak around the greens on Thursdaypublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 11 April

    McIlroy E (14:58 BST)

A graph showing where McIlroy ranked on day one - 2nd off the tee, 15th tee to green, 11th on approach, 73 around the green, 69th putting

Clear where Rory McIlroy's weaknesses were on day one.

Stellar off the tee and up to the green, but then really let down around the putting surface and with the flatstick.

  7. Winning mentalitypublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 11 April

Remember Rory McIlroy has already won two showpiece events on the PGA Tour this spring.

At Pebble Beach, he was eighth after round one. At the Players last month, he was fourth, but just one shot back.

Get off to a hot start today though and that muscle memory of winning tournaments will surely come flooding back.

  8. Easy parpublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 11 April

    Rose -8 (3)

Justin Rose at the MastersImage source, Getty Images

A nice par for Justin Rose on the third, the short par four where most players end up down the left side facing a tricky approach up the hill.

Rose leaves 30 feet with a safety first iron into the heart of the green, and we 've seen with his putting that's no problem to get down in two.

  9. Bogey start for Fitzpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 11 April

    Fitzpatrick E (1)

Remember when I confidently said Matt Fitzpatrick was finding some form?

Well it's been a disappointing start for the 2022 US Open champion who has made bogey at the first after dunking his approach in the bunker.

  10. Postpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 11 April

    Rose -8 (1)

Worth reiterating just how good Justin Rose has been with his putter so far this week.

Yesterday he was the best in the field - by some distance.

And he's just done it again.

  11. Stats say the Masters champion is....published at 14:36 British Summer Time 11 April

Only twice in the past 20 years has a Masters champion finished round one outside of the top 10, and on both occasions that was a certain Tiger Woods.

Even then in 2019 he was T11, while in 2005 he came from well back in 33rd (so maybe Rory McIlroy isn't out of it after all!). Yet it is still clear that overall Augusta National is a course for the front runners.

Seven of the past eight winners have been no lower than fourth after 18 holes (Tiger again) so the trend suggests that one of these 10 will be 2025 Masters champion.

    • 1 Rose
    • T2 Aberg, Scheffler, Conners
    • T5 DeChambeau, Hatton
    • T7 Bhatia, Rai, English, Day

    Do you agree?

Thumbs if this bunch contains the winner.

  12. Doink! But Rose makes birdiepublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 11 April

    Rose -8 (2)

Crazy stuff on the second hole as Justin Rose hits a tree branch with his approach and ends up in the greenside bunker, but he then plays a nice escape to 15 feet and only goes and rolls in the birdie!

It wasn't a bad shot, Rose was just taking the Tiger line and was too tight to the overhanging Georgia pines when cutting the corner, but the ball still could have gone anywhere.

As you should do in these situations though, you make the most of any good fortune Augusta National gives you - and Rose did exactly that by stroking home that birdie.

  13. Matt out of hell?published at 14:21 British Summer Time 11 April

    Fitzpatrick (14:25 BST)

    Matt FitzpatrickImage source, Getty Images

It was nice to see a bit of form from Matt Fitzpatrick on Thursday as he carded a one-under 71.

Fair to say it's been a struggle for the Yorkshireman recently with his highest position this season a 22nd and missing the cut in his past two starts.

Last month, he also split with Billy Foster, his caddie of six years.

Maybe, just maybe, Augusta is the place where he can rediscover his game.

  14. Coming uppublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 11 April

  15. Regulation par for Rosepublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 11 April

    Rose -7 (1)

Solid start from Justin Rose with a par four. OK, he missed the green to the right with his approach but the pitch back onto the putting surface was almost perfect - just a couple of feet away from holing it.

But he will take an opening par all day long.

  17. Yesterday's biggest rollercoaster roundpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 11 April

    N Hojgaard +4 (14:59 BST)

Sure, Rory McIlroy had an up and down day but spare a thought for Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard who had a true rollercoaster round on Thursday.

From eagles and birdies to bogeys and double bogeys - he pretty much had everything covered, stay tuned to see what he will serve up today.

He's one of the first pair of twins to tee off together at the Masters. Brother Rasmus went out later and carded 15 pars, a birdie and two bogeys to sit at one over.

  18. Rose tees off!published at 14:00 British Summer Time 11 April

    Rose -7

Right then, the second round of the Masters is truly up and running as our leader Justin Rose smashes a drive down the first fairway.

A nice calm morning at Augusta National and the greens will be as soft and receptive now as they will be all day - looks like birdie weather to me...

  19. Dunlap's nightmare roundpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 11 April

    Dunlap +18 (17:50 BST)

    Nick DunlapImage source, Getty Images

Now you've seen poor Hideki Matsuyama's ball bounce off the flagstick and into the water, you're suitably ready to hear about the worst round of the day.

Nick Dunlap shot an 18 over par 90 (NINETY) that featured seven bogeys, four double bogeys and a triple. He needs to shoot 11 under par today just to catch the next worst player on the leaderboard!

When he closed his eyes last night, there would have been simply too many bad shots to agonise over.

  20. Rose on the rangepublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 11 April

    Stephen Watson
BBC Sport Northern Ireland at Augusta National

As Justin Rose was warming up on the range, an Augusta member, resplendent in his famous Green Jacket, reminded me that it’s just the fifth time in the past 40 years, and the second time for Rose, that a player has led by at least three strokes at the end of the first round.
