  1. Ever felt you were cursed on a golf course?published at 13:55 British Summer Time 11 April

    Matsuyama +1 (15:15 BST)

If you've ever felt like your luck is out on the golf course, then take a look at this from 2021 champion Hideki Matsuyama's first round.

No wonder he looks horrified at what happens.

Oh, and don't be put off by the grab below - it's a vertical video that's got to be seen to be believed.

    And what about Aaron Rai?

The Englishman was out in front for a few holes at one point, lighting up Augusta on debut.

A hiccup around Amen Corner cost him three shots - we've seen that movie before! - but he recovered nicely to finish at two under par.

Rather impressive from the Wolverhampton-born Masters rookie.

  3. 'Just so hard!' - Hattonpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 11 April

    Hatton -3 (18:34 BST)

Before Justin Rose came along to set the pace, other Englishmen were occupying the upper echelons of the leaderboard.

Tyrrell Hatton played an excellent round of three under par, gaining the third-most strokes in the field tee to green to sit in a share of fifth with America's Bryson DeChambeau.

It's the first time he has shot in the 60s to open at the Masters.

Not that you'd know it from his usual honesty afterwards:

"It's just so hard," he laughed. "You love being here and it's very special, but at any moment you can just hit a shot and it just does your head in.

"I just need to keep hitting perfect shots."

He'll be in the penultimate group to go out this afternoon.

    Ballester +4 (18:23 BST)

Perhaps the strangest story from day one was that of Spanish amateur Jose Luis Ballester.

Playing with Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas, he "forgot" there were toilets next to the 13th tee box so instead relieved himself in Rae's Creek.

"I really needed to pee," he said afterwards. "Didn't really know where to go, and I was like, I'm just going to sneak here in the river and probably people would not see me that much."

Clearly he wasn't too flushed with embarrassment - and we've yet to hear the verdict of Augusta National on such scenes.

Freddy Couples doing memorable things at Augusta.

The 65 year old former winner became the second oldest player ever to shoot a round under par at Augusta - and he has this magnificent moment to thank, holing out from 191 yards.

    Enjoy!

  6. Can McIlroy get back into this?published at 13:37 British Summer Time 11 April

Want some discouraging stats for Rory McIlroy, who is currently in a tie for 27th?

    • Each of past five champs have been in the top three after the opening round
    • Each of past 19 champions have been in top 15 after opening round

I guess what's another slice of history for McIlroy to have to overcome in his long-running quest for the career Grand Slam.

  7. A Rory recovery? What the stats say..published at 13:32 British Summer Time 11 April

History is not on Rory McIlroy's side, as we've heard about the importance of being in the top 10 after round one.

McIlroy is bang on the limit at seven shots behind leader Justin Rose as well, as that's the most a player has ever come from behind after 18 holes to win the Masters - and that's only happened twice.

Seven is also not a very common number on the scorecard of a Masters champion, as nobody has carded a seven along the way to pulling on the Green Jacket since Craig Stadler in 1982.

  8. What happened to Rory?published at 13:28 British Summer Time 11 April

McIlroy finds water to double 15

For 14 and a half holes, Rory McIlroy was making a mockery of naysayers who suggested his poor record in round one at the Masters could cost him here.

He had carefully plotted his way to a score of -4 and, with a par five still to come, looked ready to eat into Justin Rose's lead.

Until he overshot the 15th green. His aggressive chip plonked into the water and led to a double bogey.

Another double bogey swiftly followed on the 17th and suddenly he was seven shots back.

A punishing end - but can he bounce back today?

    Scheffler -4 (18:23 BST)

Scheffler features in Masters day one best shots

Slightly ominously, the world number one Scottie Scheffler serenely carded a four-under 68 to sit joint second on the early leaderboard.

Keeping his card clean and sinking some monster birdie putts, the reigning champion is in prime position.

Asked about his stats afterwards, Scheffler simply replied: "You get off to a good start, statistically you're going to have a better chance to win the tournament."

Statistically Scheffler has got off to a good start - and it is hard to bet against him pulling on another Green Jacket on Sunday.

There’s been rain overnight here but Augusta National doesn’t have to worry about conditions being too soft.

The club has a Sub Air system which removes water from the greens and can control the temperature of the putting surfaces without interrupting play.

When the pumps are running, they create a humming noise and some are even included under patron crosswalks so they don’t get too slippery.

Justin Rose has actually finished second twice at the Masters, including an excruciating play-off defeat by Sergio Garcia in 2017.

Two years prior he was runner-up to Jordan Spieth.

"I’ve played well enough to win here - I just haven't got the Green Jacket to prove it," Rose said yesterday. "I’ve got a lot of crystal, which is always nice.

"Ultimately, you want to be last man standing on Sunday, and I was a shot shy - I guess Sergio and I in 2017, that was a real 50/50. A little bit of Lady Luck here and there is always the difference at times.

"But I've had my luck on occasion and been a champion. Ygot to be playing the golf to keep creating those opportunities. The only way to do that is to get your name on the leaderboard."

He's certainly done that so far here.

Don't know why anyone - including us - was taken by surprise when Justin Rose vaulted up the leaderboard.

After all, he is now out on his own with five times leading the Masters after round one.

That's more than Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and the rest.

The flowers that adorn Augusta National are some of the most famous in sport but it was an English Rose that delighted the patrons on day one at the Masters.

Opening with three birdies, Justin Rose made another three through holes eight to ten and on 15 and 16 to give himself a chance of the course record.

That mark of 62 fell away after wayward tee shots on the 17th and 18th brought his solitary bogey.

Nevertheless, he takes a three-shot lead into Friday.
