World number three Xander Schauffele is still on the mend from a rib injury but it'll be many years since he saw a +11 on his card.

He won two of the four majors last year.

Here, he's still got five holes to play and is seven over for his final round.

At the moment, he's coming last...

  4. Where has McIlroy excelled?published at 18:39 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

Rory McIlroy's stats: Putting 11th, Approach 3rd, Off the tee 30th, Tee to green 9th

Rory McIlroy is renowned for his driving but actually, off the tee has been his weakest metric so far this week.

Instead, his putter has been rock solid and he has been exceptional approaching the green.

Those are the metrics that win championships.

Those are the metrics that win at Augusta.

  6. How about MacIntyre?published at 18:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    MacIntyre -8 (14)

Four shots off Rory McIlroy, Bob MacIntyre has been playing a very tidy round.

Once the jokes about being used to this kind of weather in Scotland are done away with, one can praise a very handy golfer who knows his way around every club in his bag.

He's three under for his final round and has four holes to apply pressure to the players further up the leaderboard.

Just 23, Akshay Bhatia is in his third season on the PGA Tour and has already managed to win two events.

The talented left hander claimed the 2023 Barracuda Championship and last year's Valero Texas Open - both of which he won via a play-off, so he's obviously able to hold his nerve under the most intense pressure.

That may help if things get nervy down the stretch here when play begins again.

  11. What's left to navigate? Part twopublished at 18:06 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    McIlroy -12 (11)

While there are scoring chances, there's plenty of peril too.

Everyone knows about the 17th but how about the 14th? There were no birdies on 14 at all yesterday.

That's the first time in 20 years that a hole at The Players did not yield a single birdie.

Oh and then there's 18. If there's a more intimidating tee shot in world golf, it's very rare.

  12. What's left to navigate?published at 18:01 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    McIlroy -12 (11)

When play resumes, Rory McIlroy is three quarters of the way down the 12th and eyeing up a gentle lob onto the green for a birdie chance.

The par five at 16 also offers a really nice chance for McIlroy to put his foot on the accelerator.

  13. Rain continues to fallpublished at 17:56 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter is out at Sawgrass. When we asked him how it was looking for a resumption, he replied: "No news yet. It's very grey overhead and raining solidly."

  14. McIlroy's to lose?published at 17:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    McIlroy -12 (11)

One narrative could be that Rory McIlroy has to win, given the experience and ranking of the other players at the top of this leaderboard.

But this is The Players Championship.

All the best golfers in the world are here and over four rounds, they have not performed anything like as well as he has.

  16. Comeback joypublished at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    McIlroy -12 (11)

    Rory McIlroyImage source, Getty Images

Don't forget Rory McIlroy started this final round four back.

What a performance to be leading with seven holes to play.

He is a comeback king though - 15 times he has won when trailing going into the final round.

  17. Weather picturepublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    TPC Sawgrass

The PGA Tour explains why play has been suspended, with that angry strip of weather cutting across northern Florida.

Rain is no problem, but the threat of lightning is something that golf tournaments take no chances with.

  18. Bad break for Rorypublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    McIlroy -12 (11)

This is a bad break for Rory McIlroy, who had just rolled in a fine putt for birdie on 11 and smoked his tee shot on 12 to position A++ in the middle of the fairway.

But it's an early lunch for the leader and the rest of the players as they retreat to the clubhouse for what could be a lengthy delay looking at the weather picture.

  19. Postpublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

TPC Sawgrass has emptied pretty quickly.

The rain is falling persistently and everyone has headed for shelter.

  20. Hoge hits the final greenpublished at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Hoge -10 (17)

Tom Hoge hits the green in two to set up a birdie chance on the last to get to 11 under which would be a really interesting clubhouse lead.

Shame he'll have to wait for this weather delay to take his chance.
