Summary

  1. Play suspendedpublished at 17:17 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Iain Carter
    BBC golf correspondent at Sawgrass

We've just had the most colossal thunderclap. The hooter has sounded and play has been suspended.

  2. Birdie finishpublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Fleetwood -5 (71)

Tommy Fleetwood is on the final green, staring down a 30-footer to finish as the rain gets heavier. Drained. Lovely finish for Tommy who will be scampering for the clubhouse after a one-under-par final round.

  3. Postpublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Spaun -11, Cauley -9, Glover -7 ()

We were warned about the weather and it's suddenly gone very dark around TPC Sawgrass.

The wind is howling, the rain is falling and the players suddenly face a more daunting challenge.

None more than JJ Spaun as he unleashes at the green on the 11th but it's held up and plunges into the frontside bunker.

  4. Postpublished at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Iain Carter
    BBC golf correspondent at Sawgrass

We're getting radar pictures of a big yellow splodge that is heading for Sawgrass, signifying the storm coming in. It would be a real shame if this final round was to be delayed because it's absorbing.

  5. McIlroy moves ahead!published at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    McIlroy -12 (11)

Rory McIlroy rolls in a beauty from 13 feet away on the 11th for a birdie four that takes him into the outright lead at 12 under.

He's really moving now as the rain starts to fall a bit heavier at Sawgrass, hopefully we won't get a break in play as that's the last thing McIlroy would want right now.

  6. Par saverpublished at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    MacIntyre -8 (14)

Up on the 14th, Bob MacIntyre is in the sand after an errant second shot. But that's a magical escape, skidding his ball into a couple of feet and that will be a simple par putt.

  7. Postpublished at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Hoge -10 (17)

Tom Hoge is safe and dry on 17, but a mile away from the hole.

He manages to trickle his effort from 40 feet away down to just two feet though to save his par, which he then rolls in.

  8. Postpublished at 17:04 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    BBC golf correspondent at Sawgrass

This has got echoes of Tiger Woods and Rich Beem at the PGA Championship all those years ago.

  9. Spaun misses birdie opportunitypublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Spaun -11, Cauley -9, Glover -7 (10)

Stunner from JJ Spaun as he dances an approach onto the 10th green to within six feet.

This would be a good time to convert - but he misses it. You feel those need to be made if you want to hold off Rory McIlroy.

  10. Another for Walker!published at 16:59 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Bhatia -10, Walker -10 (11)

Danny Walker makes it back-to-back birdies to move to 10 under and now just a shot off the lead.

Playing partner Akshay Bhatia makes his par there but will be disappointed he didn't give himself a better birdie look from just 117 yards out.

  11. Morikawa misses another birdie puttpublished at 16:56 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Morikawa -7 (17)

He might not be putting well but there are no creases in Collin Morikawa’s iron play.

What a shot at the iconic 17th - only to duff his short birdie putt.

That’s why he’s not winning this tournament.

  12. Birdie for Hogepublished at 16:56 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Hoge -10 (16)

Tom Hoge takes advantage of the par-five 16th, which is the easiest hole on the course today, to move to 10 under and just a shot behind the leaders.

Now, he walks over to 17 and we'll see how his nerves are doing as he's got a great chance.

  13. Birdie for Bobpublished at 16:55 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    MacIntyre -8 (13)

Barely a murmur from Bob MacIntyre after he knocks in his short birdie putt on the 13th. Four birdies in his past seven holes and he's three back.

  14. Postpublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Bhatia -10 (10)

Akshay Bhatia leaves himself 117 yards to approach the par-five 11th, but he's well short with his wedge shot and with softer greens the ball is digging its toe in now and he's got all of 40 feet for an unlikely birdie.

  15. Par for Rorypublished at 16:51 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    McIlroy -11 (10)

Decent par from where he was off the tee, and a nice solid lag putt as well from 40 feet which he knocks in for his four.

    Par five coming up...

  16. Here comes Cantlay?published at 16:50 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Cantlay -8 (11)

Maybe Patrick Cantlay isn't going anywhere after all.

Three shots dropped in two holes at seven and eight seemed to have ended his challenge but he's worked his back to eight under par with a birdie at the 11th.

A shadow that just won't go away.

  17. Postpublished at 16:45 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    MacIntyre -7 (12)

Here comes Bob... the left-handed Scotsman is on the par-three 13th and, like many players before him today, fires a dozen feet right of the flag and allows the contours of the green to feed his ball down towards the hole.

It's superbly judged and he's got a four-footer to get within three of the lead.

  18. Walker birdiepublished at 16:45 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Walker -9 (10)

We mentioned Danny Walker earlier and he's gone on to birdie the 10th now and he's just two behind!

A reminder - PGA Tour rookie, last man into the tournament, got a late call-up on Thursday, now just two strokes off the lead at the flagship event...

  19. Postpublished at 16:43 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Morikawa -7 (16)

Second-last for putting yesterday and Collin Morikawa's touch on the greens has deserted him again in the final throes of his round.

There's no little frustration in his gestures as his birdie putt on 16 slips past the hole.

Does nothing for his prospects of setting a score.

  20. Spaun birdies nine to join McIlroypublished at 16:41 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Spaun -11, Cauley -9, Glover -6 (9)

Lovely from JJ Spaun as he clips onto the ninth green and leaves himself seven feet for birdie.

This would be the first of his round... and he's got it.

Back up and into a share of top spot.

A nice birdie for Bud Cauley too as he returns to nine under par.
