Good guesses - but wrong sadly. Any more?

Hubby thinks the last cardigan-wearing [champion] was Ernie Els. My guess is Payne Stewart.

    Lowry -3 (7)

Shane Lowry well and truly has the bit between his teeth at Royal Troon.

A superb chip on to the green by the Irishman, with a hint of back spin, leaves him a trouble-free putt for a third birdie.

Lowry acknowledges the cheers from the crowd and then, business-like, briskly walks to the tee at the eighth.

He's two shots off the lead now. Irish eyes are smiling.

Plenty of stars and stripes hovering around the top of the leaderboard after all.

    Horschel -5, Lawrence -5 (4)

It's breezy on the fifth as Billy Horschel and Thriston Lawrence weigh up their first par three of the day.

Both push their balls left - Lawrence weigh wide and into the rough, Horschel into one of those evil greenside bunkers.

  5. Postpublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 21 July

    Brown E, Scheffler -2 (6)

Six has not been the cleanest hole for Dan Brown and Scottie Scheffler.

Nine feet is just the type of range that sets your teeth on edge and both need it for par.

Both miss and slide back from the leaders.

  6. Par for Rosepublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rose -5, Schauffele -3 (5)

Justin Rose finds the green on the long par-three fifth, but he's almost 30 feet away so it's just a lag putt exercise, which he passes by leaving his ball just a foot from the hole.

Xander Schauffele does the same to card his fifth par of the day - not too much happening for the US PGA champion but he's still right there and he's not been in much trouble yet so will remain a threat.

  7. Lowry narrowly misses birdiepublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 21 July

    Lowry -2 (6)

Shane Lowry has his tail up now. He almost sinks another gigantic putt on the sixth only for the ball to just come up agonisingly short of the hole.

There's still time for the Irishman to get himself into the reckoning.

  8. Lawrence and Horschel join Rosepublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 21 July

    Horschel -5, Lawrence -5 (4)

Not that the waiting is bothering them, mind.

Justin Rose now has some company.

Terrific from Thriston Lawrence as he clips in close and tidies up for birdie.

Billy Horschel takes a different route but he too finds the cup with a confident putt.

This final group are having to do a lot of waiting around. Billy Horschel, in particular, is straining to get a shift on, charging ahead of Thriston Lawrence as they move along the links.

  10. Bogey for Rahmpublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rahm -1 (11)

    Jon RahmImage source, Getty Images

A delightful touch with a wedge by Jon Rahm limits the damage on 11 to just the one drop shot.

He's only four back and is the one most likely to set a target for the others behind him on the course.

    Jordan E, Thomas +1 (7)

Back-to-back birdies for Justin Thomas to almost wipe out that opening triple, while Matthew Jordan does finally level out his round with a third birdie of the day cancelling out his bogey and double bogey.

They'll both look to try and kick on now.

  12. Postpublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 21 July

    Horschel -4, Lawrence -4 ()

Aggressive play from Thriston Lawrence once again at the par-five fourth.

He's up by the green after two shots and will be eyeing birdie.

Billy Horschel has held back with his second and he'll be wedging in from 80 yards.

    Rahm -2 (10)

Is this where Jon Rahm's challenge falls away?

His tee shot on the 11th was found but he needed to take a penalty drop, and his third on the par four is 50-odd yards away from the flag.

Up and down in two from here would keep his chances very much alive.

  14. Attacking start by Rosepublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rose -5, Schauffele -3 (4)

    The OpenImage source, Getty Images

It was a safe start by Justin Rose on the opening hole but on the last three holes he's been bang at it with his approach shots, having left himself seven feet, six feet and seven feet for birdies.

He's taken two of them but that's enough to lead the Open right now and he looks like he's going to attack this final round from here on in.

  15. Postpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 21 July

    Brown -1, Scheffler -3 (5)

Hope Scottie Scheffler has packed his sandals today as he's found a bunker for the third straight hole at the sixth.

For the past two holes, he's managed to scramble away to save par.

This one is pretty ugly though, right at the front against the face.

  16. 'Dream start for Rose'published at 15:08 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rose -5 (4)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup

Justin had a real fist pump when that went in. He’s looking really good, really right into this game and he's got the dream start.

Not sure I agree with Ross at 14:49. If I want to see a slugfest in horrible conditions I'll just head out to local course with some mates on any Sunday in the UK! When it comes to the pros I want to see the game played brilliantly.

    Rose -5 (4)

    Peter Scrivener

That was some cheer that greeted Rose's birdie. He's already fist-pumping. A great start for the Englishman who has posted the fewest bogeys of any golfer this week. Just four in his opening three rounds.

Justin Rose is giving himself birdie looks on almost every hole now, with seven feet left for a four on the par-five fourth - and this time he makes no mistake as he rolls it in to take the lead.
